Heaven cannot be conquered Mr Dalrymple - it can only be discovered and Ajanta and Ellora caves are only a tiny fragment of the wonders of India. As country it has an innate quality of tolerance to external influence but was abused.

Luckily the art of Ajanta survived from distuction in the hands of the Islamic Armies because they were lost from public memory
