Though it’s only been around for a couple of years, the new 6.5 Precision Rifle Cartridge made a big splash when it first came on the scene in 2018. Well, with the dizzying array of 6.5mm cartridges out there like the 6.5 Creedmoor and 6.5 Swede, many people are wondering exactly what the 6.5 PRC brings to the table that those older cartridges don’t already do.
That’s perfectly reasonable. After all, many people said the same sort of things about the 6.5 Creedmoor. Well, the 6.5 PRC is essentially a magnum version of the 6.5 Creedmoor and it offers some definite advantages over the Creedmoor cartridge. Many hunters are still understandably skeptical about the new 6.5 Precision Rifle Cartridge though.
In this video I discuss the pros and cons of the 6.5 Precision Rifle Cartridge in detail, plus I also provide some information on the 6.5 PRC vs 6.5 Creedmoor so you can decide which one fits your needs as a hunter.

I bought a Ruger M77 Hawkeye in 6.5 PRC last summer. Once the ammo situation became clear, I experienced instant buyer’s remorse. I was eventually able to get enough cases and powder to start reloading for it. I have not regretted the purchase since. If you like the 6.5 CM, you’ll love the 6.5 PRC. If you’ve established your shooting fundamentals, you can hit 1000 yards the first day you shoot this rifle.

New to your channel. Good analysis from a a big game hunter's perspective, if the gun hangs on the wall (locked-up these days) off-season. If big game hunting is it, there is undoubtedly more ammo spent on annual sighting-in that shots taken on big game. But, if the gun is going to be used off-season, you need to also compare barrel life, if putting hundreds or thousands of rounds annually through the gun. Recoil also becomes more important when daily shots fired is high. Personally, I like having one versatile gun that I know inside-and-out that gets used year-round. I may have a fast handling brush gun, a shotgun, a .22, etc., but I find having a gun that I'm proficient at putting an appropriate bullet precisely on-target in a variety of ranges, weather, terrains, and lighting out weighs all but the most extreme cartridge selections. So, for those year-round guns where accuracy counts, lack of recoil can be the edge in winning competitions. But, when putting many rounds through the gun regularly, barrel-life is also important in both cost of replacement, gun downtime, and possible different ammo preferences of a new barrel. Another note: almost everyone judges cartridge accuracy by shot grouping when that is a combination of shooter skill, many gun factors, and finally innate cartridge accuracy. So, how do you isolate cartridge accuracy? Simple and most have the data without realizing it. When the bullet leaves the gun muzzle, there is nothing that the shooter or gun can do to effect the accuracy -- obvious right? So, how do you measure the accuracy of the cartridge alone? Minimal muzzle velocity variation, every other factor is a result of shooter skill and gun. Varying velocity affects not only bullet drop, but also vibrations in the gun as the bullet travels down it. Whether factory made or hand-loaded, the bottom-line for the accuracy of a cartridge is as narrow as possible muzzle velocity variation for a given load. Some cases produce more consistent powder-burn than others, hopefully with a variety of primers and powders. Every cartridge is exceedingly accurate at the muzzle, and nothing will affect its group accuracy from that point on except atmospheric variations, and variations in the bullet and muzzle velocity. Between the primer ignition and the bullet leaving the muzzle, accuracy is about having consistent vibrations with consistent gun response. Uneven powder burning will add vibration variations which degrade accuracy. Bottom line:innate cartridge accuracy is easily measured inversely to muzzle velocity variation for a given load.

The 6,5 prc is really a great ctg! You can make all and better than 270 W...I made a similar ctg in the 1990 shortening the 6,5x68 at 308 and I have had the same results...48 gr norma 205 for 3100 fps 125 nosler and 46 gr x 140 at 3000 gps. My 6,5 Jaco is 10 years before all short magnum...

After a 20 year hiatus, I'm planning to hunt whitetail in the Southeast (mainly for meat). I have an old Winchester 30-06 from the early 80s that I inherited from my grandfather. I picked up a short barreled (12.5") Christensen Arms MPP carbon fiber fancy etc 6.5 creed for ~ $700 during the 'brace' crisis ordeal. It's impressively accurate considering what it is, but I'm not going to hunt with it. Been looking at a Bergara HMR pro, or premier. I'm open to almost any brands. I still can't decide weather to go with 6.5 PRC or stick with the creed since I already have ammo

I was a 6.5x55 guy for 25 years here in NC deer hunting mainly. I bought a Bergara premier approach in 6.5 prc a couple months ago. Only have 30 rounds through it so far and I'm not looking back. It solved my problems because I was reloading for the 6.5x55 to get some decent velocity. In the 142/143 grain I'm getting 2930 fps in the prc and what is really hot is the terminal ascent 130s. Box says 3000 I'm getting 3100.

A major con is how the 6.5 PRC feeds in my custom M700 rifle. 2+1 capacity. If I had to do it again, I would build it on a medium action. Overall, I like my 270 win better for a hunting rifle. Take the 6.5 PRC to the range and take the .270 hunting. I killed a nice mule deer with my 6.5 PRC. DRT at 337 yards. But my 270 has done that for decades. But I will not shoot game at over 400 yards but I will punch paper up to 1000 yards.

I happen to run across a savage ultralight in 6.5 PRC. The previous owner bought it and could not find ammunition so I bought it from him. I was able to find 10 boxes which should last me a lifetime with reloading. Might point out that the 6.5 Creedmoor at 2750 ft./s has about 2400 foot pounds of energy. If we reload the 6.5 PRC to a velocity of 3150, that yields over 3100 foot pounds of energy. Substantial difference. Definitely puts it up into the elk class of cartridge.

How about barrel life? This is an important issue when comparing cartridges,
@GetMeThere1
@GetMeThere1 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on usage. If a rifle is strictly for larger game hunting, for example, then it hardly matters at all. If you plan to do a lot of practice and pleasure shooting it matters a LOT. If you plan to shoot long range competition it doesn't matter a whole lot, because you already assume you're going to be changing barrels periodically. But sure, 6.5 PRC has lousy barrel life -- probably 1200 rounds or less at optimum accuracy. The thing is, there's no way around that if you want maximum ballistics. If you don't care about maximum ballistics then the 308 is an awesome choice -- most people estimate a minimum barrel life of 7000 rounds for the 308. BTW, I like to think about barrel life in terms of TIME. A seat of the pants barrel life estimate for the PRC is: average velocity in a 24" barrel 0 (starting velocity) + 3000 (muzzle velocity) /2 (average velocity in barrel) = 1500 fps. Time in barrel: 2 (2 foot length of barrel) / 1500 fps = 0.0013 seconds (a bit over 1 millisecond). Life time: 1200 (round life) x 0.0013 (time for each shot) = 1.6 seconds! A 6.5 PRC barrel has a lifetime of under 2 seconds!!!
@pstewart5443
@pstewart5443 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's about the same and that is especially true if you handload. You could just buy the 400ModBB Bartlein barrel and not worry about it all unless you compete a lot. Then instead of 4 barrels a year, you'll only need 2 barrels while saving some money, about $200 per barrel. If you're using a standard stainless steel barrel and you clean it properly, then you'll see about 1800-2100 rounds before you begin to see groups opening up as the throat has eroded and fire cracking becomes worse. Stainless tends to hold up a tad bit longer in the 6.5 family over chrome moly. Some will argue that fact, but I compete often with a 6.5CM and have shot using both types of steel. Stainless cleans better in my opinion too, particularly in the 5R twist design.

I have a chance to get a new rifle in one of these 3 calibers. 6.5 Prc , 6.8 western or 7mm. I want to be able to hunt elk and deer. Maybe some long range shooting in the future. I currently don’t reload. What would you recommend? I wonder if the prc or the 6.8 might not take off and be around for the long haul. What are your thoughts? I do live and hunt in the west. Thanks for a great video.

Pretty late for a reply but in case you're still looking for someone else's thoughts. I am currently building a custom 6.5 PRC. I would have much preferred to do the 7mm PRC but there's no ammo nor reloading supplies yet available. I like the 6.8 western except there's no premium brass options for reloading and I wonder if Winchester and Browning will be the only ones really making ammo for it; worries me from a supply perspective. The only draw back on the 6.5 would be that many people find it to be a little light for elk though I've seen several elk taken with one. Mine will be primarily for mule deer and speed goats. If elk was a definite regular game the 6.8 (or a good old 270) might be a better option. In the 7mm's I'd be happy with most cartridge's in that caliber. Probably favoring the 280 AI cuz that's how I like to roll.. Mostly though I think you're starting to split hairs between most of these options. Not saying you could go wrong with any but just some thoughts.

I was thinking of getting a 6.5 PRC for elk but I've seen too many videos where the elk just seem to absorb multiple shots in the boiler room before they tip over. Clearly does the job but maybe a little on the outside edge of ideal. I'll stick with my 6.5 creedmoor for deer and 300 WSM for elk with good constructed bullets, which has always put them down with one shot if I do my job.

Well-read very informative you should do more reviews. I have a 6.5prc and i don't run it very hot there is something in having air space in the cartridge at even2700/ 2750ft per second it is still very accurate in a tikka 24inch barrel we don't have big game in aussie land, and it will still drop a roo at 400yards.I think there is something what the Swedes did with 6.55x55 it just burns powder well better barrel life to. To me it's like owning a Ferrari you're going to give it a flogging and it will wear out faster but if you had old car 4door 6cyclinder still does the job and will get there for a lot longer😀(Hate to be hit by ether of then at 60mph)🤣🤣

Great coverage of the differences. I rarely see anyone competing with the 6.5PRC which is due to the recoil differences. Spotting your own shots is a major component of competition and most folks will go ahead and make the jump up to .284 Win instead of stopping at the PRC in either 6.5 or 300. I've never seen anyone competing with the 300 PRC which is really odd considering both 6.5PRC & 300PRC were made for competition. I have seen a couple of the 6.5 GAP aka SAUM lately whereas that was a rare unicorn. Seems people would rather just use the full on ultra mag over the light magnum 6.5CM or PRC. Appreciate the overview!! I was considering the 6.5PRC until I did some research and you helped narrow down to the fact I don't need the PRC to achieve 3000fps, as I can easily pull this in my 6.5CM using hotter loads.

I realize that this is over a year old, however I got to ask. I am selling my .308 rifle and am looking for a new caliber for the larger NA game (Elk in the foreseeable future). I am trying to decide between Creedmoor or 6.5 PRC. My issue with the Creedmoor is that I currently have a 6.5 Grendel that I can use for Deer and smaller. Would the Creed really be all that different from the Grendel? I hunt on a budget, so I'm not really a big fan of the large/expensive calibers, and 6.5 PRC seems to be pushing that budget up a bit for ammo. Is it worth the cost increase? Or is just getting another .308 really the way to go at this point.

I still dont understand. I have long reloaded for the 6.5x55 in modern rifles (sauer, bergara, tikka, sako, rem700) and the velocities offered by the 6.5 PRC is not that impressive. Sure the x55 is longer, but you have larger magazine capacity then and many rifles are still made in one lenghts (bergara, tikka) so thats irrelevant. Sure, factory loadings are what they are - mostly due to americans sitting on piles of small ring mausers or norwegian krags that has weak actions.

The 6.5x55 is a GREAT cartridge! The thing that really seems to handicap it with Americans is the fact that factory ammo for it isn't loaded anywhere near the full potential of the cartridge. That's not an issue for Europeans and it's not an issue for handloaders like you. What bullet are you using in that load where you're getting 2,825fps? What all have you successfully taken with that rifle?

Using the 143gr ELDX bullet in the Hornady manual, the 6.5 PRC velocity drops to 2700fps (which is the muzzle velocity of the 6.5 Creedmoor) at around 150 yards. This means whatever the PRC can do at a given range (say 1000 yards), the Creedmoor can do at a range 150 yards less (in this case, 850 yards). While a pretty good argument can be made of going from a .308 to the 6.5 Creedmoor, especially as it now is the "standard" for this bullet diameter, I just can't see it for the PRC. It was crazy going beyond the standard OAL for short action cartridges for the tiny extra velocity this added length bought them.

Might review your comment about comparison of the 6.5’s....you may have your own conclusion backwards.

I just can't justify giving double the money for a box of PRC ammo for so little of a gain of performance especially when I have a 6.5 creed that shoots half moa at 100 yards with a bunch of different factory ammos

It doesn't fit the short action...it has provided an absolute ball ache for manufacturers. Custom solution's with long seating mag feed go long mag action and mag.

the hostility towards these calibres is typical for americans ignoring what the rest of the world and particularly the massive benefits from metrics used all around the world. the swede in particular massive use on same type animals hunted in scandanavia where they simply have a better understanding of capability. the recoil issue is massive and factory ammunition or availability of ammunition and combinations.
