11:19 Re: Magical Swords, Probably one of the most interesting magical swords from fantasy fiction was Stormbringer from Michael Moorcock’s Elric of Melníbonè saga. A grim weapon that drank the souls of whatever it slew. It also imparted strength to the wielder which worked for Elric because he was a feeble, sickly person. An unfortunate side effect of wielding Stormbringer is that the weapon sometimes took control at the most inappropriate times and sometimes it killed those whom Elric… did not want dead. I’ll leave it at that. Stormbringer was more than just a sword. It had a personality. It yearned to slay and drink souls. It blazed with a dark radiance when drawn and crooned evilly when swung in battle. Elric was dependent upon the sword for strength and for defense…he had many enemies you see, some of them were godlike in power. Magic weapons were always more interesting when they had a drawback that went along with their benefit. It makes for a better story. I will also add that swords are the noblest of arms and are interesting whether or not they are magical.

I love the band of characters trope. I’m such a character driven reader as well. ❤ Evil wears black. 😂

For a moment, I considered that Harry Potter has a prophecy, but we do not hear of it until late in the series. It is not really a governing element throughout the series, although it assumes a similar role later. On the other hand, in Darksword we learn of the prophecy almost immediately.

I didn't even think of Harry Potter having a prophecy, but you're right there is, even if its not used as a plot device through all the books. Good catch!

Off topic, but please tell me about that picture frame with the display of the miniature books.

Actually that is a gift from my mom. I have two of them but only one is in frame I think. It's from an Etsy shop that will make you a mini bookshelf of whatever books you want. My mom and me both really love Jim Butcher's Dresden Files and Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson/Alpha Omega series. So, she had a mini bookshelf of each series made for me. The one in frame is Patricia Briggs's books. I have Jim Butchers on the second shelf. They are super cool and look pretty real. If you're interested in getting one for yourself I'm sure I can ask my mom what the Etsy store is called.

I agree these are tropes for high fantasy. How about urban fantasy? I am wondering how many of these carry over and how many are different when you move to the urban fantasy arena.

I will have to think on that and put that into a new video. Thanks for the interesting thought!
