I don’t think Mab is evil, I think she’s cruel. She moves according to her nature, because she is a force. She balances the fae courts and most importantly, doesn’t have free will. Marcone on the other hand, is a human with free will. His actions knowingly harm many people for his own profit and power. For me it’s pretty cut and dry.

I love the logic and truth in this video about reading goals. So, why am I 🤣? Because I don't make reading goals. None. So being here is redundant but I was curious. I like what I read. I want to discover one that makes me happy and ones that I soooo love and hype and made a deal with a friend [to read her favorite so she will read mine]. Yes booktube make preasure in a sense "to be real reader you need to read..." kind of feeling and for booktuber I believe it makes even more preasure because of having-a-book-channel. The presure I have is finding always 2-3 new book or some new high fantasy titels that I wonder when will I reach them. So for now I have a box of TBR book-cover-printed-pictures as a reminder for when I don't know what I want to read next [like I still haven't read Sanderson...]

I was guessing you would choose Laurana. I think she is under appreciated and deserves more recognition for her story arc and growth as a person. When the original DL trilogy was written back in the 80s it really wasn’t all that common to have female characters be so complex and experience that much growth. Superficially she can be mistaken for the stereotypical “beautiful elf princess” that mostly exists as a personification of the male hero’s ultimate prize. However she is not a superficial character at all but arguably the character that experiences the most personal growth in all of DL. She starts out spoiled, naive and with very little agency (and the agency she does have she uses to chase a man) but she grows, learns, starts to see the world beyond herself, she gradually starts taking more and more responsibility, overcoming her fears and learning to be brave, to fight for others while also maturing in her understanding of what love is. She doesn’t discard her love for Tanis but rather she becomes more mature, more reflected and nuanced. She ends up breaking down gender barriers - not because it is her right as a princess, not because she is so beautiful that the knights can’t help but to accept her into their organization, but rather because she proves herself, her courage and her competence. She defies her father, she defies tradition when it is backwards and u productive, she takes action and she fights for what she believes in; ultimately becoming the Golden General and being one of the main reasons that good prevails in the war of the lance. I think that is pretty darn progressive for any story written in the 1980s and even more so for a fantasy story.

100% agree! Laurana is amazing! My all-time favorite fictional character. I particularly love the duality in her in how she becomes such a fierce and capable warrior while still being so loving and compassionate. She really was everything a hero should be.

I did think of a personal question if you don't mind. I started reading the original Dragonlance Chronicles with my 11 year old son for his first time. He does not like reading so we are doing so together and alternating reading pages to each other. It's going well so far - he seems to be enjoying it, which is exciting as it's MY all time favorite book. However, I'm nervous how to approach the few riske sections of the book such as Gilthanas and Silvara (if you remember). As you read the book at a young age, if I recall, i was curious if you felt the age level was appropriate or, if not, how to handle those sections. Thanks!

Questions: - How and Why did you decide to start this channel? - I learned about this channel from your “so you like Dragonlance” video and I’ve read all the books you recommend in there. Can you recommend any more books to an old DL fan? - what do you like about fantasy as opposed to other genres? Hope it is okay that I post multiple questions. Thank you for the video and your work in general!

He only took the black robes so HE (and the rest of the companions) would survive at that moment in time. He had to make a deal, otherwise I think he was content with the red robes. I don’t think he is evil in the same sense that the big bads are. Also it’s made clear that he has a sort of regret/negative feeling about the circumstances with Crysania (DoSF)

Raistlin has been my favorite character since I first read the Chronicles over 30 years ago. I feel he is most definitely evil. His ultimate goal is more power for himself. Just because he did good acts along the way doesn’t make him good. For him, the ends justify the means. So doing a few good things isn’t a measure of his goodness, it’s just a variable in his climb to power.

Based on my recollection of the alignment definitions at the time of the books' releases (mid-80's IIRC), I believe Raistlin to be Chaotic-Nuetral. I don't believe any if his actions throughout the series are ever really evil, per se... But, more selfish. So, I wouldn't think any of the "evil" alignments actually fit. His "good" actions are primarily self-serving, so the "good" alignments don't fit either. He's definitely not "lawful", which leaves "neutral" and "chaotic". I didn't see him being true neutral (nuetral-nuetral), either... He doesn't flip flop on his actions for the sake of neutrality.... Definitely "Chaotic-Nuetral"

I remember really loving the warriors series by Erin Hunter at that age. Those books are about wild cats and their clans. It’s not a traditional fantasy, but the story is told from the cats perspective so it feels like fantasy to me lol I also recommend the Inkheart series by Cornelia Funke. Or Narnia by C.S. Lewis If you’re reading it to her, she might like His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. It’s a little bit older for reading level (like 10-12) but if you read it to her it would be fine. I haven’t read it myself, but ive heard several people here on the channel liked the Redwall series when they were younger so that one might also be a good choice. I will continue to think of more and let you know what else I come up with. 😊

Sirius Black is my absolute favorite character in Harry Potter! I only wish he survived The Battle of The Department of Mysteries at The Ministry of Magic. I think that had he survived, he would have been cleared of all charges, given The Order of Merlin that was originally given to Peter Pettigrew, and would have been able to adopt Harry! And, I’m sure that the Witches of The Wizengamot would have absolutely been in love with Sirius Black! I can only imagine the scene in the Courtroom had those things I mentioned above happened! Sirius is just so sweet! I love him! I love him, I love him, I love him! I love what Gary Oldman decided to do with his hair for his role as Sirius Black in the Harry Potter Films! I think Gary Oldman gave Sirius an extremely handsome look! Not that Sirius was extremely handsome already, mind you. But, Gary Oldman took Sirius’s dark, handsome looks to another level! And I love it!

I think he's a necessary evil and I think that if Paladine really felt that he was going to up end the balance too much he would have destroyed him early on. Of course he didn't because Paladine knew ultimately at the end of the line he would maintain and save humanity.

I don't think Mab is evil she just doesn't have empathy or compassion, she only has purpose. Marcone everything he does is for self promotion. Mab can not kill humans and fights to protect humanity. Remember everyone who is under Mab's banner, she feels them when they are injured or killed. Now think of all the bones at the outer wall in fairy. Every minute of every hour of every day for thousands of years she has felt their deaths.

I have tried numerous times to read/listen to/watch the Harry Potter stories and while I can jive with the early parts, where his family hates him, and he has no friends because it reminds me of my own childhood, the author loses me when the magic starts to show up. All this magic being used Willy-nilly, without any consequence. Kids flying around on brooms playing a sport, when’re they could potentially fall to their deaths. One character alters time itself so she can take an extra class in school. There are many examples of flagrant magic use. It’s not really my kind of story. No disrespect to J.K. Rowling, you don’t sell millions of books without being a great writer. My question is this: What is the price of magic? What has to happen in order for someone to use this energy in order to bend reality to their will? If you look at folklore magic usually comes at a high price. Aladdin’s Genie usually gets him into more trouble. As does the Monkey’s Paw. Some magical items in stories give you benefits at little or no cost and sort of insulate the user from the costs of magic. But many more magic items come with a caveat, or restriction. In the real world, we use energy and technology to do amazing things but a price is paid. Inventors spend years perfecting their inventions. Coal and gas and oil have to be dug out of the ground, electricity must be harnessed with complex machinery. And there are always losses. You can never get more energy or work out of something than you put into it. So what price should the magician pay for their magic?
@JosephHeller-el8zo
@JosephHeller-el8zo 4 ай бұрын
One thing I do remember about Hagrid is that he tells Harry that he used to be a wizard, but he did something wrong and had the magic taken away from him. But Dumbledore gave him the caretaker job as a sort of consolation. So maybe there is a price to be paid for using magic in the Harry Potterverse? You have to not upset the higher level wizards who govern you.
