List of shortcuts: Save: Command or Ctrl S Move to next edit point: Up and down arrows Move to next edit point regardless of which tracks are selected: hold shift with up and down arrows Move frame-by-frame in the timeline: left and right arrows. Hold arrows down to move playhead at almost real time. Move 5 frames at a time in the timeline: Shift with left and right arrows Select work area bar: [ for start and ] for end. Then select enter to play work area Apply default transitions on selected tracks: Command D on a mac and Ctrl D on Windows Zoom in on the timeline: + - Zoom in on the timeline on a mac: Hold option while scrolling up and down (my own tip if you use another mouse)

Thanks so much! My notes (may be useful to others?) Ctrl-S - Save Up-arrow - Up timeline to next edit point. With shift key, moves even through deselected videos. Down-arrow - Down timeline to next edit point Left and right arrows, move 1 frame at a time. With shift, 5 frames at a time. Alt-[ and Alt-] - set workspace Enter key - play Ctrl-D applies default transition Ctrl-Shift D applies audio transitions + and - zoom in and out

Thanks and by the way the last short cut you can hold ALT and scroll your mouse up or down to zoom in and out, its much easier for me to do it that way.

Except that won't work to zoom into where your pay head actually is - ie. where you are actually working on an edit. Unfortunate that Alt + scroll has this limitation which makes somethign that could be great pretty useless.

Very helpful! It gets hard to remember the secondary shortcuts if you're working with multiple programs at once.

Yay! Amazing tut, man. I really needed some of that info. Instead of using plus and minus, I find it a LOT smoother and faster to use ALT + mouse scroll wheel. Thanks for the vid, those transition shortcuts are really going to make things easier. The hardest part about getting into editing is finding the ways to save yourself time, you never want to edit when you dread getting carpal tunnel and wasting 10 hours.

An even better way to zoom in an out of your timeline is press alt and then scroll with your mouse.
@AA-zq1sx

Actually ALT+Scroll will zoom in and out of the middle of your timeline (useless), whereas + / - actually zooms into where your play head actually is on the timeline (functional).

These are all good, though I've remapped a few more: One thing that's really bizarre is Premiere's lack of "Duplicate" default shortcut. Since it's "Ctrl-D" in AE and most other programs, I'll remap the transition shortcuts to "Ctrl-T" and "Ctrl-Shift-T", then map "Ctrl-D" to Duplicate. REALLY handy. Another crazy handy shortcut mapping is mapping "1" and "2" between "Composite Video" and "Audio Waveform" in the source panel. I find editing to waveforms to be far faster a lot of the time, since you're often trying to grab a talent soundbite or a music cue. Having a handy shortcut to quickly switch between audio and video display has sped up my editing by a good 25%. Oh, also "Alt-Drag" a clip from the project panel onto clip in the timeline replaces it, which is so useful for making common revisions to titles and graphics. It's similar in AE, though it requires you select the target layer first. (selecting multiple timeline clips first allows you to swap out a bunch at a time!). I'm also constantly using different editing tools, especially "Slip" and "Roll", which are mapped to "Y" and "N" by default. Learn those, they're really handy. Then there's one last non-keyboard-related shortcut, but that's similarly handy: "Shift-Drag" on any time ruler snaps the playback head to nearby edit points/keyframes/markers. Yes, you can use "up/down", but sometimes you've got your hand on the mouse, and it's just as fast, and you can instantly snap it to anywhere. Very handy for keyframe editing. This is also true for AE as well. If you use After Effects heavily, I suggest synchronizing your shortcuts as much as possible, it'll give you twice as much of a chance to learn these good habits, and you'll never catch yourself doing the wrong one in the wrong program. Tilde is nice, but really only for AE. With a typical two-monitor setup, Premiere can pretty much show everything you need without expanding anything. If you're using enough effects to warrant expanding a lot, you're probably better off doing the job in AE anyway.

You can duplicate any clip by simply holding ALT and dragging any clip. This will drag out the duplicate to wherever you want it.
