Great review! I drive a Fortuner Legender, here in Cambodia and I also experienced the transmission sluggish shifting. I asked some tuners in Thailand and they said it’s because of the Torque converter lock and unlock, a tune will help eliminate it right away. Anyways, I love the 2.8 here and we drive at 120-140 day to day with average of 9.5L/100km. Cheers mate thanks for sharing!

@@NorthOz 💯 I’m excited. I think it’s very luxurious for a Ute, it’s like a Ute/ car that does everything, a supermarket run or off the road over hills in style. It certainly ticked all my boxes and created more boxes I never had that I could tick. Having that confidence in the reliability aswell, you can’t go past the rogue! Keep it up mate!

I agree with everything you said mate. I absolutely love the car, I don’t understand why so many people dis the 2.8, I personally find it it drives better than the mighty 3.0 4JJ3 from a D-Max. As for the transmission, I have the same issue when taking off, shifting 2nd to 3rd the car will up shift and then down and shift again. But if you give a bit more throttle it disappears, but this thing use so much fuel during take off. Another issue I find with the transmission is that on the highway the car stays in 5th gear most of the time. And engine braking downshifts are way too aggressive, there’s literally times where I’m sitting at 4K rpm going downhill with empty load. I have to force it to manual when going downhill.
@NorthOz
@NorthOz Жыл бұрын
Yes! I completely agree! The downshifts rev so high so I have to use manual mode to reduce it. I’d rather use the brakes than that much fuel. Great points!

Great review! It’s easy to take off the tub fairing. But you are left with a rather rough edge. I can see someone making up a blank to cover the edge for fitting a rooftop tent. The panels on the inside pull off easily, then undo two bolts that hold the small outside fairing, then you have access to all the bolts.

I agree that Hilux rogue is going to be a collectors for sure. Same as the 2022-23 prado. I feel if anyone is looking to buy a collectors Prado they ought to buy the 2022-23 runout model year as it has all the corrections plus extras additional features add to that built year. One the other hand If I was a single man, yeah I probably would have a ute too, but right now for me the station wagons fulfils much of our needs. Just with your gear hilux gear box, it would be interesting to learn if the SR5/SR gear box do the same things? I’m thinking it maybe due to the wheel size and the wider track as compared to the standard SR/SR5 models. I’m sure you will sus that out and share us that info. Cheers! Great info thanks for sharing!
@NorthOz
@NorthOz Жыл бұрын
I will investigate the gear box stuff for sure. With that many hiluxes sold, there has to information if it existed before the rogue. You are right, it could be from all of the suspension changes for sure. All of the current 4wd offerings from Toyota will be worth some money in the future once they bring in this universal chassis as everyone always wants the old stuff
@geenev5543
@geenev5543 Жыл бұрын
@@NorthOz I agree most folks do prefer the new stuff, but I can understand why, I’m thinking for insurance purposes the 4x4 sold in Australia are heavily controlled by the safety standards set by the big mining and fleet companies here, which means we as the general consumer have little to no say on much of the safety systems as identified by them big companies. but yeah personally I think the 90s 2000 era they made the best engines and since then they have only improved on those engines since. If I ever upgrade it will be only due to safety and economic reasons.

How is the sound proofing of the cabin? About the glare on the head unit: dark foil the back windows and this should reduce that and also will help with temp inside while the car is in the sun. The back seats not folding is a strange thing. Tacomas have very well organized back space. I guess it is a price issue - they try to keep it at some level and additional stuff will drive it up...

@@NorthOz Better than the Prado? That's really surprising! The foil costs money and maybe it is an option... don't know. I'm not sure how is it here in Europe. HI, Great Video thanks. I have a 300 VX on order but not keen to fork out that kinda dosh. I just seen the Hilux SR sport with a few nice features that I like. Now Toyota has thrown a spanner in the works by telling everybody that the NEW Prado is not too far away(what a Dilemma)! I did have a quick look at a demo Rogue yesterday and was surprised to find it has a carpeted tub liner 😒. For a vehicle that will be used as a touring vehicle, I guess that's fine. But I'm not entirely convinced. You mentioned the lack of tiedown points (Oh dear). And I certainly not keen to drill holes in my floor to accomodate the bolts for the tracks. Yikes!! I will continue to follow your exploits in your awesome looking Rogue. It's a tough decision cos I owned a Ford Falcon XC many years ago and it was a POS. I will never own anything other than a Toyota. They just keep going and going. I have had 3 Toyotas (celiac, 120 Prado, 200 LC0 and never had a single rattle, squeak or stoppage in over nearly 500,000km. I'm happy with that. My 200 has 235,000km and is amazing. Again thanks for the great videos.😃 Peter
@NorthOz
@NorthOz Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and that’s a bit of a dilemma. The extra tie downs is a 30 minute job and not difficult at all. I would keep the 200 if you can. The 300 is a bit over priced but it is a leader in the segment without comparison as patrols are no longer direct competitors. If you can hang onto the 200, do it. Otherwise, hiluxes are a safe bet if you can handle the terrible ride unladen and you’d probably sell the 200 for the price of a new hilux anyway

I've had my 23 rogue for a month now (2000 ks ish ) and I agree with many of the things you say. I have a rumble inside the dash when I hit a certain RPM slowing down and sometimes its quite loud and it does bug me. My EGR roller started having problems after less than 100 ks but I told toyota about it and they recalibrated it and I haven't had a problem since. Turning circle yes I must admit its a bit of a pain and you have to go sooooo far forward to park in a spot but the cameras really help and most of the time I can get it in two goes. I live in Perth and work at a older shopping centre so the car spots are small. I haven't had anyone ding my doors.....yet I would argue that the fenders might help protect the car. The carpet is a weird one for me too I was like hmm that's really weird and extra but yes I love it now I put my dog in the tray and it protects the tray easy to clean also makes it so I can shuffle around on my knees in the tray and its fine on the old knees. The biggest things I hate about the rouge is the number of tie down points I have plans to weld in some tracks on the tray itself so that will fix it for good. The other one is the trans I used to drive only manual cars and I feel like it sorta doesn't know what gear to be in half of the time it shifts up and down and up and down when accelerating. Sometimes on the highway it stays in 5th and I have to go a little faster so it shifts to 6th then slow down so it uses a higher gear at 100ks and the engine braking when going down hill is way to aggressive for my taste. But other than that like you said fuel econ is fantastic for such a big car I get 9L to the 100 city driving. Power is excellent and there when needed for what I use it for which is touring. The Hilux has defiantly found a place in my heart replacing my 99 forester GT.

Great review Mark. Ive done nearly 6k in my Saturn blue Rogue and absolutely live it. Yes it has its issues(roof rack😡) but on the whole its bloody great. I have the factory bullbar which adds weight and aero issues, snorkel and Yokohama At's and i get between 10-10.5lt/100. Not great but not bad. Your issue with transmission hunting was cured on mine when i added a throttle chip module, pretty much drives like its in POWER mode all the time now and transmission is a lot happier. I drove a SR5 for work and i find the ride is soooo much better on the Rogue, it rides better than my NX pajero which i traded in for the hilux. Wife is also very happy with ride so it cant be that bad(my wife drives a lifted JK wrangler, so probably not a great comparison). Your front ride height can raised,.just fit the factory winch springs, about $180 if i remember correctly. Also the JBL sound system rocks,.way way better than the 6 speaker SR5 system. Amount of tech is perfect,not too much but everything you need.( Thankgod for buttons and dials)( although i wish the fan speed was a rotary dial instead of +-buttons). Rear seat drop down is a total miss by Toyota, obviously not thinking on that day. But something i have noticed is the towing, its an awesome tow'r. Very very impressed with towing( although an extra 15kw would help, I'm looking at you GR sport!!!!!) Yes its expensive ( especially with snorkel and bullbar, 80k for mine). But its a Toyota, it will do everything you want and reliably. Also with more than 400 stealerships and product support nationwide, you cant go wrong.

The price climbs quickly on these and comes close to raptor money but I’m planning on keeping this forever so I don’t mind spending the money now so that I can keep it for a long time. Strangely enough, it wouldn’t sit on 80 very well but would do 110 and above in 6th beautifully. Problem solved now. Went and bought a 2022 SR5 manual. I carry 600kg permanently in the tray, average 9-10.5 l/100km surprisingly. It has quite noticeably more top end grunt than the previous gen 2.8 (2017) but definitely has some turbo lag. Honestly I prefer the previous generation 2.8. Better response for day to day grandma driving.

Great reviews! I've had the rogue for a couple of months now and at around 4K K's. Did also have roller shutter issues that are ongoing (sometimes works, sometimes doesn't). I am concerned about degradation of the exterior plastics and did a little research. I found a product from "Chemical Guys" called VRP which is a Vinyl/Rubber/Plastic protectant. I've been applying this to the exterior plastics after most washes and seems to work well. Time will tell I guess but worth a look. On another note.. the first thing I said when I got it was "the screws for the visor should be black!". Anyway.. I've got over that now. Cheers.

Good point about the screws haha! The chemical guys product sounds interesting. I’ll look it up. You’ve certainly racked up some kms already. Great to here you are loving it 🤙

I had a 2021 rogue and had nothing but issues with it since day dot. The car wouldn’t start constantly with Toyota replacing the battery 3 times. The electric roller doors also died on me. The 2023 certainly looks a bit better, but I’ll never buy another hilux again.

That’s a shame. The roller top can be problematic but the battery is a new one for me. Sorry to hear about that

All Land cruiser series (Prado, 200, 75) are built by Toyota factories in Japan which have better QA control than other countries. Hilux is not built in Japan.

Completely agree. Unfortunately the hilux (like most utes) come from Thailand and the fit isn’t as good as the Japan models. Great pickup mate 👍

why the seat headrest facing back
@NorthOz
@NorthOz Жыл бұрын
I just realised I didn’t talk about this. The front facing head rest pushes my head forward, so by turning it around, I can lean back in my seat with better posture 👍
