This is a temporary fix for those who have lost their homes. House-lessness is a different problem entirely. Not just a roof over the head but they need an infrastructure where mental hygiene can be supported. The U.S. treats its mentally ill like dog crap.

I’ve been looking at the housing innovations for a while, including the tiny house movement, container homes, homeless shelters, and Vanlife. What I usually see is municipal bylaws who try their hardest to outlaw any humanitarian efforts to house the homeless. If you build it, the NIMBYS won’t let you put it anywhere.
@Itried20takennames
@Itried20takennames 2 жыл бұрын
That is a huge problem (not being able to place tiny or non-standard houses in most areas), but people aren’t being just being anti-homeless or against low cost options. The NIMBY’s have some genuine concerns…imagine if you stretch to buy a house for 300k because it was in a good area for kids , then down the road someone builds a power plant with lots of overhead lines, or a hog farm, or a tent -yurt city. Even if totally open minded about it, these will knock 50 to 100 k off the re-sale value of your house, which many needing their house appreciation to pay for much of their retirement, kids college, etc. I don’t have an easy answers for this, but think the tiny houses in particular will be more and more common over time?

Do you prefer any particular style of dome especially when I say style as far as material used to create the basic geodesic shape I mean there's so many ways that I've seen these units go together I've even seen people use scrap lumber and bending machines with scrap pipe cut to 4 in length and create a way to just use nominal and minimal materials I don't know there's really some serious potential for the future of this shape being that it really does not need any framing it can withstand amazing wind speeds tremendous downward pressures Buckminster Fuller really created something that will hopefully last far into the future

@@arlenmargolin4868 Not the person this question was intended for, but I am considering one of these domes from Domespaces (Florida). I have also purchased plans for wood models with and without hub connectors. The biggest holdup, for me, is that I want to visit a completed model of the fiberglass model in the video. The second issue is that you need to caulk around the panels when putting them up and probably need the insulation package. My ideal setup would be a large dome using the post/wood with wood panels covered outside with stucco. Inside take 3/4ths of the dome and place a self supporting home within the dome that has no roof, no insulation, and uses thin walls. Most likely two stories. The square rooms in the internal structure would fit the traditional expectations and you could cool/heat the dome and the internal "house" could just open windows to moderate temperature. Light could be pointed to the dome to provide ambient light and the extra space in the 1/4th of the dome unoccupied could be decorated with fake grass, trees, and made to feel comforting. I could even see hanging a hammock in the fake front yard. :-)

At 3:50 the tent like structure lasting only three years should be banned. The amount of materials used for such a short length of time is an eco disaster. Another point is that I have listened to the prices. I live in a used 29ft holiday trailer and paid only $1800.00 for it. With upgrades I am into it for almost $4000.00 but have lived in it for over 4 years now. I have double the square feet as the shelter at 9:50 of the video, for a fraction of the price. These seem OK, but understand I have a bathroom, fridge and stove, oven, deep freeze, air conditioner, and mega windows including a great picture window, with a rewired 90 amps of power, all in the $4000.00 price mentioned, and live in a serviced year round RV lot. This is more cheap and convenient as I have propane, 110V electrical and 12 Volt, and winter pack all for a fraction of the cost of these setups. I even have hardwood maple as cabinets. I also have an awning for outdoor shade. I am sitting in it now in front of my 65 inch 4K tv writing this post.

This has been an obsession of mine for years. I've built my own home a few times, they're always small and temporary, and each time they get more dialed in. I'm currently living in a great, normal home, but I crave the era of my life when I was young and broke, trying to stay warm while starting a farm on raw empty land. There has to be cheaper options that are more durable than has been provided by these large corporations. I can make greenhouses that are 8x10+ that cost less than $100, and it would be very simple to sheath roofing onto the hoop frame, and even prevent the need to screw it down by throwing ratchet straps over the top to cinch it to the flooring, adding even more structural support during winds. My current design is essentially an A frame, but the peak is reduced down to minimum headspace for a 6'2" person so they can occupy 80% of the floorspace without hitting their head. This would provide the A frame structural surperiority, but also have the top gamble roof be a cap to lock it all into place. My design specification is that it can be made with all off the shelf materials, and then broken down into panels to fit in the back of a small truck, and weigh as little as possible, but not have any plastic exposed to the interior for air quality. I'm achieving most of these parameters with aluminum flashing and 1/2" cedar picket board. I wish I had access to manufacturing of custom panels like IKEA does, that'd make things easier.

No it's not, the dome shelter parts are odd shaped and difficult to ship to location which require a big rig to transport one or two units, plus there are no interior walls to separate areas, and requires extra flooring to level the structure... this not practical to cheaply and quickly setup for many refugees or homeless people.

The Mayor of Los Angeles needs to look into this. Like any shelter have some people watch and facilitate with case management while and teach them to keep clean again with the means to do so. Much better than having them laying in trash in the streets. It should be done to look neat and provide the needs for the homeless till they can do better. By the way every Mayor should look into it. The dome is garbage... difficult to transport one unit to a location cause of odd shape design, hard to setup, require special designed flooring to support structure, has no separating walls or shelving, no holes to attach HVAC unit or plumbing, and costs way too much for poor people. The best was Pallet Shelter which 30 units can be transported on one big rig truck, built of durable aluminum frame and composite wall material, easily setup by two or three people, has shelving and bed built into design, HVAC unit can be installed, comes with bottom flooring, has a locking door, and both small and large units cost under 10K.

But, that had also been long before Covid-19. Some younger, Run aways, some abused by a father or step parent and acouple brother and sister, Parent's passed away in a automobile accident.. There are some real situations out there, that should not be necessarily. People on drug's and not wanting to follow clean and sober guide line's that some shelter's stipulate. One couple with a pitbull did not have a Service Animal and did'nt want to go into a shelter because couple did not want to loose pet nor be split up.. I advocated to young people, as too consider not doing drug's any longer. Too much negatively and worse related to that life style. Older single women out there now also living alone on these streets of Portland, Oregon. And I feel for them. Thanks for the comments from all. @@ytSuns26 Good Comment for thought. There will be people doing this in one group after another if it was legal. I thought farms need to make invites...they won't because everyone is still on the money and people love land all around them with private property....They use these sized shelters at refugee camps for years but maybe not so nice of one's. Military probably could use them if it was cheaper. They love to pack up and go leaving land and buildings empty and abandoned. Obviously anything valuable is underground. People would rather pile up storage containers for strength....Really, people need underground shelters with taller air vents. Tornadoes, floods, fires, all need consideration. Not much money around means fire department not necessarily going to show up but they protect rich neighborhoods and crowded neighborhoods in cities. The more people nearby, the more they show up to fight a fire....For the most part all this is very temporary shelter, probably for after a battle or other issue where short term temporary shelter is needed.

@@ouivalerie I mean farms need land to produce food, unless you want the people who feed our entire nation to just suddenly stop what they are doing. You should talk to the landlords of houses and apartments that have been sitting empty for months because how high they set the rent, at it’s worst in NYC and LA. There are literally more empty houses, apartments, hotel rooms etc. than there are homeless people. We could solve the homelessness crisis but I agree it’s all about money and it’s sickening. I hope I can be in a situation in the future to start a community with shelters like this.

There are so many cost effective ways to provide housing to people in need. Most of the above are glorified tents., With the exception of the dome. I ve seen foldable houses, recycled material houses, printed houses, you mean to tell me that with all the genius minds in this country, the cities can't fork up big lots to house people and get them off the streets? We have multitudes living in their vehicles because they cannot afford decent housing. I bet without all the corruption there could be for example 450 sq. Or 600 SQ ft houses that look good and make people have a safe place to live so we can end homelessness once and for all. When folks actually see their tax money go to work in stead of being squandered by crooked politicians with their endless red tape, we can finally get somewhere.

It's a good alternative for people whos houses are undergoing renovation... or experienced storm damage..... For the homeless, you have good intentions, but this is not the best solution. When many homeless shelters are grouped together, you're just making slum neighborhoods.... A better solution is to provide the homeless who can drive - vehicles... Vehicles where they can sleep in, and also move in.... Sometimes all that a person needs is mobility. It can make all the difference. The government(s) will have to get involved - for licensing, insurance, a weekly gas allowance, and vehicle maintenance.

Something larger - dormitory style or perhaps smaller pods suitable for 1 or 2 people. There are couple of companies I haven't featured yet. One is WeatherPort Shelter Systems, more geared towards commercial applications. Other is www.iglou.world/en/, which is basically very simple insulated sleeping pod that prevents frostbites, hyphotermia, and freezing to death.
