We usually think of smart people as people who are destined for success and given more opportunities than others. But what if there are some problems that are more likely to arise if you are indeed intelligent? Are you too smart for your own good?
If you relate to this video but you're still not convinced that you're actually smart, we have a video on the signs you may be smarter than you think: • 8 Signs You Are Smarte...

That's happened to me once when we were playing a fun game in class (keep in mind this was for FUN) and I missed it and on the big screen in the classroom it didn't show names. But someone said "who got that one wrong? " I just sat in the back quietly. Ofc the person in front of me just HAD to be nosy and they looked at my screen and said very loudly "she did! " and everyone looked at me laughing and I felt terrible. Like big deal I got one wrong. Cmon ppl it was a fun TRVIA game. I can't be this awesome all the time yknow.

7. No one who understands you. 8. Being judged for over-doing your work. 9. Called lazy. 10. Getting bullied/ picked at. These are the problems I face at school being smart and yes, I have all of these over my life... I'd really appreciate it if you added these points too. Thank you Psych2Go!

Youd have to be an ididot to follow the Standart "smart" by Psych2Go. There are people with photographic/Eidetic/../ memories remembering every intricate detail they have done/said/learned/thought/internalised/acted/what everyone else has said.. and more. People who innately comprehend material the level of Masters with confirmation from students or teachers that it is a difficult subject to master let alone by a glance look into it and know more than the teacher has been taught. My moms cousin is an alcoholic he lives in his apartment covered with books, his bed has sanked in stolen/bought books he might or might not be intelligent but for someone like him to exist comparable to me who barerly reads the amount he does per day, it's hard to think I'm even slightly intelligent instead dumb stupid pathetic loser - that's literally what I am every day

8 and 9 are exactly how my life is. It’s weird how you can over do work and still be “lazy.” I can’t really agree with 7 because I never talk about my feelings, I was raised to know that it is only for bad people, so nobody can really understand me or not if I don’t give them anything to understand. For 10, luckily where I live finding a bully is like finding a four leaf clover. They’re very rare.
@Pikachu-nj3cx
@Pikachu-nj3cx Жыл бұрын
I don't express my feelings either but there is a sense in people whether how the person is feeling. I have that feeling but as no one really likes me alot and I get bullied half the time on school, I can't help anyone. But then there is this sense. I agree with you.

@@Pikachu-nj3cx Sorry about all that bullying, that sucks. I get what you mean on where people can sense others’ feelings, and I do agree that people can be bad at sensing my feelings. I’ll sit alone at lunch a lot of the time at school and people think it’s because I’m sad and lonely so they try to sit next to me and cheer me up, but in reality I’m only alone because I want to be alone and I couldn’t be happier.

Well there are a lot of average or below average people. I don't think people should be ashamed of being below average because it isn't their fault. But unless you've had an official IQ test you don't know. More intelligent people apparently have more doubts about their intelligence, I've heard. Also there are other qualities that are very important too. Some smart people are terrible in other ways and lots of smart people do poorly in life.

We could say that I "was" smart. Back in my childhood (including middle school period) I was always stressed and anxious going to school. Even though I had really high marks, and it satisfied me, this happiness was too little compared to what I had gone through everytime (FYI: I was almost always suffering from fatigue, mostly because I'm introverted and y'know...) on top of that, I had really high expectations from my parents, which destroyed me psychologically because they always checked on me. I didn't know what I really wanted, until the first year of high school I finally knew that I wanted peace, that's why I stopped being the "smartest one" and I can't be prouder to say that. My parents for some miracle stopped to analyze what I did everytime so I was as fresh as ice: I went to school happily almost everyday (except tests but that's obvious, nothing wrong here 😂) and I mainly focused on tighting some friendships (even with teachers) and aimed at becoming a better person, that's when I was finally proud of myself. Yeah, I wasn't the smartest, but I was an educated and happy fella, probably the best feeling I ever felt (and still feel today). I'm still in high school, fourth year, still have to fight some obstacles, but I feel like nothing can stop me. I felt like sharing this here so there you go, it also made me feel better somehow

Oh yeah. I procrastinate and am a perfectionist, but if I get below an M (my school does B (Beginning) I (Intermediate) M (Mastery)) I feel like a failure. My family teachers and friends are always telling me that I shouldn't be scared of failure, but it TERRIFIES me. I've always been the "smart, good, responsible kid, who is the teachers pet" but it makes me soooo stressed and always want to be right. Like, I shouldn't need to answer every question the teaches ask, but I want them to know I try. Gods this went long, I'm sorry.

I can safely admit here, that I find quarantine to be a HUGE blessing that has given me weeks, months and even years of peace and tranquility I never believed I would experience. My deepest sympathies to those of you who have lost loved ones. After seventy years that included hundreds of dreadfully painful days, trying my best to "fit in and enjoy" family gatherings (holidays being the worst), Covid, in all it's forms, has given me the one impenetrable excuse, with absolutely no guilt or judgement, to say "no" and stay home. Yes, I'm a Mensan. And, yes....I am occasionally lonely. It quickly passes.

in the part about developing psychological disorders, yes, people who are smart often have ADHD or ASD, but that is not caused/developed because of them being smart. you’re born with ASD, it means that our brains literally work differently. I was labeled as “gifted” in school and have an IQ of at least 149, which was the lowest I was tested. It started after I would frequently get in trouble at school for interrupting lessons too much combined with often not paying attention. It wasn’t so bad until high school where I become much more intently focused on my social shortcomings. I became obsessed over finding friends I could form close bonds with, but failed to seem to fit in to connect with anyone in a genuine way. I could get along with anyone by mimicking social norms, but always felt lonely. Plagued by that as well as an obsession of the meaning of life I became hopeless. I didn’t know it at the time but I had a major depressive disorder that wasn’t diagnosed until my adulthood as well as social anxiety. What made things so much worse is that during this time of existential rumination I stopped putting any effort in school above the minimum required to not fail classes. My parents, which alway though me so smart, responded with unkind words, restrictions, and other behavior that made me just reject life entirely. I developed a drug habit as they had such a profound effect in bringing back my motivation which only alienated me more from my family. Life as an adult work has been trying as well. I pursued early childhood education and work with parents under the principles that would have helped me as a child. I am successful but constantly find friction with co-workers over my obsessive and over analytical nature. While they simply want to maintain the job status quo and keep the same effectiveness over time to lower job difficulty, I only want to make constant improvements and always strive to create even more work than is necessary. I chase a perfection (perfection that is unattainable, I know) but this frustrates my employers and coworkers. My life hasn’t improved much but I can cope much better than in my adolescence. I am of course a night owl as well and don’t seem to tire but I don’t find this aspect of my personality that trying. I hope to continue to help parents to approach their children with a mindset of nurturing. More than anything we need to know we are loved no matter the results of our tests or whether we go to a high level university. Our personality and effort need be celebrated while avoiding labels such as “smart” or “talented”, which can be a burden one feels for life.

Those are mostly traits of people on the Autistic spectrum, which do overlap heavily (as mentioned in the first point), but aren't the same thing. As I’ve started to ignore, they haven’t been coming to me for help. I built my character so that the other person thinks twice before approaching me for such questions and comments. As someone with an IQ of 131 I can vouch for nearly everything said in this video only 2 doesn’t apply to me. Also I am very lucky to be surrounded by people who understand those ‘overexitabilities’ and really don’t mind when they occur. Also I get frustrated quite easily which is linked to the huge amounts of stress. Also I don’t know if this is related to my intelligence but I have also had trembling fingers my entire life.

However, a score of 148 is required for the Cattell test. See what I mean? You ever heard of the old proverb, "it's better to keep silent & thought of as a fool than to open ones mouth & remove all doubt"? No, I'm not saying you're a fool either. It's just that some things are better left unsaid is all. (The wisdom side of intelligence.) Food for thought. Anyway, having said all that, your reply seemed to me to be very honest & fair enough. No I don't get stressed because I talk to myself 24/7 and I take lots of time isolating myself from people. I don't think I'm smart. I just grew to become a disciplined perfectionist because I've always had to do everything on my own, even as a child. So anything less than perfect is not going to cut it, because if I don't do it no one will. This is why I took entire group projects on alone and let the other team mates enjoy the ride. Anything less than my own standards isn't good enough. It even made me arrogant and selfish. But if there's no one to have your back, it's simply necessary. You could argue only an intelligent person could handle that kind of responsibility but I hate to differentiate between "smart" and "not smart". It's all in how much you care.

One of my professors once said: smart people struggle with motivation/procrastination because they never had to struggle much initially. Unlike people who have to learn how to overcome struggles, we are not taught how when life eventually gets hard. It can be especially hard to ask for help when people see you, or you perceive yourself, as the smart one who should have the answers.

Ahhh, I've heard this a lot, and I never really believed it until maybe two years ago. It's begun to resonate with my current situation in school, because everything has been increasing in difficulty and I've always expected myself to be able to accomplish what I need to. It's been quite taxing struggling to build up motivation and incentive that I really did take for granted a while back. Your professor speaks an honest truth, and I hope my school takes note of this and begins to reach out more to the students whose performance has been changing because of their own internal struggles and expectations.

The worrying part with videos referring to "smart people", is that actually intelligent individuals (given that "intelligence" is extremely difficult to define by itself), should not really define themselves as "smart" anyway... Socrates said the phrase "Εν οίδα ότι ουδέν οίδα" which I think from time to time, and it translates as "the only thing I know is that I know nothing". The essence of this phrase gets down to: When you get to a high enough level of understanding of the world, you realize how little you really know (and probably will know till the end of your life). That realization really humbles you, and in my book actually directly contrasts with self-identifing as "smart". And I do get that knowledge and intelligence are two different things, but necessarily directly correlate with each other.
@ShortNecked_GreenGiraffe
@ShortNecked_GreenGiraffe 2 жыл бұрын
I agree... other than the fact that I myself self-identify as smart. I'm not narcissistic or anything (although usually they do tend to be smart anyways, but there's a whole other level of psychological stuff going on there). I just reckon it is possible to realise you are smart, while still in a humble way. for example, I only know because I began to notice how people didn't seem to understand me, I was very critical and analysing, hyperfocused on things, understood much harder things etc. etc. than other kids my age. And I suppose I must've stumbled upon some information like this I guess that kinda made me think I was smarter than most people and that was the only explanation, sooo...? on top of that, I certainly felt smarter. i eventually learned how to read people better and how intelligence actually works (while it is somewhat subjective), and from there I was able to understand how someone thought and what their capabilities were. ...I guess the difficult thing is I still question whether I'm still smart all the time, and many times tell myself I'm getting dumber even though that's not true.

Who said we are inteligent by having theese issues? Ya'll have to understand that theese are "some" of the factors, more "above the average intelligent" human beings suffer. This is a place where we can understand each other and feel better knowing we aren't alone. If someone feels like they could be above the average, it's not because of theese 6 things but because over the years we have had our problems like teachers saying we are smart and everyone puts big amounts of expectations on us... It's very sad and lonely because i can't even conect with my family since they are never interested in stuff like astrophysics,geography,human anatomy,history... The point im making is that i doubt everyone is calling themselves smart in the comments, it's just that we tend to suffer from theese problems and others. Have watched many videos like this , but interesting this is the first one that mentions being a night owl. My natural rhythm when I can freecycle has always been to work at night (I'm a writer), sleep in the morning, then do social stuff/chores afternoon and early evening before settling in to work at night. Have always preferred night since the world is much quieter when everyone else is asleep. Easier to get around town and go shopping after dark as well.

That interesting, because there’s a quote in the Qur’an says something along the lines of” The intelligent people are the most afraid of god” because there intelligence makes them aware and see how vast and complex the world we live in is, and it also makes them realize just how limited we are as human beings. Though, I feel like the sadness mentioned in the quote above is a result of one not accepting these limitations and focusing on what we don’t know and can’t do, rather than what we do have and can do. Reminding ourselves of what we do have no matter how little, makes us feel more grateful, content with life and is a good way to happiness. and the whole “seeing the cup half full” is a very underrated message, imho. Sorry, for this sudden dump of thoughts. 😂 It’s just what you said really resonated with me and got all these thoughts rolling.😊

As much I'm a child, I seriously experienced this before. I tend to think a lot and over analysis everything, and have high expectations for myself. Its not fun to ponder on a idea so long or you might get very negative about it. Its basically torturing yourself with ideas you shouldn't think long and hard of. Every time I do something in a certain way or someone does, I will think and the end less ideas what it could possibly means even a emotion. Stress is a another thing, and OE's. I didn't realized I have OE's due to being labeled 'problematic.' Stress is way high on my list because I stress on so many things that exist and other that don't exist. To a point I started getting white hair. I have high expectations due to being praised as a kid for having the best scores on tests, spelling bees, projects, and etc. Now as a middle schooler, its hard because I need it so everyone knows I'm still the smart kid as before. Everytime, I see a bad grade on my report cards I just scolded myself for having that even its a B+ (its not fun) As a smart person, just try to do things on your own pace. If you didn't exceeded at the first time it means your not there yet but you have more to learn. Try to be organized as much as possible. Study's test & gets notes and ask questions! Don't be so hard on yourself for having a C's or D's even a B's because we are learning and we tried. What Im telling you is that just don't be so hard on yourself for having a bad grade. Just have fun and do your best.

Yeah! Sometimes, if I get decent grades in tests or I’m just seen as kind of smart, it doesn’t mean I’d know the answer. Exactly! I was identified as a gifted student in elementary school, still am, and people always expect me to do the best. Like, I lost so much just because I am “gifted”. I’m depressed, have anxiety, and have no friends I can relate to all because I was isolated from my peers since a young age. I have terrible social skills, no motivation for anything and procrastinate everything. Then, everyone says that I’m lucky because I’m smart. I’m not lucky, people, okay? I just want to be normal, which I can’t be because I have no other identity apart from being “smart”. Sorry for unloading all of this on you.
