Sick-Note: Some companies accept staying home for up to three days without a sick-note. All others must accept at least 3 days for the note to arrive. So I would call my employer that I can not come today, then call my doctor for an appointment. If I am unable to leave the house, maybe the doctor makes home-visitations or he calls me in maybe the next day and give me the sick-note for the time back, which I can send to my company via (snail)mail, e-mail or maybe a friend, coworker or neighbor. If I end up in hospital totally beaten up, I hope that they will accept the paperwork any time soon...

Most of the other points have been well-covered; some additions: "Limonade" should in theory be lemon-based (although it could be from Limone/Limette). However, we use the word to cover all fruit-based fizzy drinks. There is Orangenlimonade, your example would be Erdbeerlimonade, and, hold on to your seat: Zitronenlimonade. When it's freshly made I would make sure to ask before ordering, because it is indeed ambiguous. When entering a doctor's waiting room, I give a perfunctory "hello", but heaven beware, I'm not about to start a conversation. On the bus, when I'm exiting at the front and the driver opens the door just for me, he gets a quiet "danke schön". None have ever complained. I wouldn't shout it from the back, though, don't want to scare the other passengers with any surprising cheerfulness 😂 Don't stop, however; people will think you're crazy, but inside their heads some of them will smile and think "I would never do that, but it's nice".

Concerning Tapete: I live in a house that is 113 years old and also was damaged in WW2 since a bomb detonated next to it. The flat is great with high ceilings but not one wall is straight in any sense. So it is the easiest thing to use "Rauhfasertapete" since it covers or distracts from uneven spots. And you can paint it several times. edit: spelling

But the questions remains: why wallpaper in the first place? I live in a building from 1890 in Hamburg, yes the walls are uneven and there are dents and the odd blotch of paint from former tennants but that's what gives it character and the walls are so nice and cool to the touch. I would hate if somebody came and covered them up in Raufaser. I would probably move out, to be honest 😅

1. Leichtathletik vs Schwerathletik (and Rasenkraftsport): because in the 1800s in the same sports club there used to be some people who did running and jumping but also pushing/throwing with light objects (discs, javelins, bowls) and then there were people who did similar sports with heavier objects (imagine trees or lifting stones). The latter activities became codified as the weight lifting of today (with wrestling subsummized into "Schwerathletik", execued indoors ) or stayed outside as "Rasenkraftsport" with lots of non-olypic disciplines. 2. Because it was originally wedding festivities taking place in October. Later on, the now annual festivities were moved earlier in the calendar to the end of September because of the weather. 3. Rauhfaser is very practical, because you can paint over it several times without the need of new wallpapers. E.g. we had a couch in a brownish-beige color and a matching Rauhfasertapete in a very, very light beige tint. But then we bought a new dark purple couch. So we just painted the walpaper in two different lilac shades. 4. Because we are indoors. We always greet when we are indoors (or at least should). E.g. on the staircase in multi-family home, or in the bakery/butcher's/small shops, because there are people behind the counter waiting to be of service to us. Public transport like malls and big/self-service shops are not considered indoors. Though I'd always greet people in a train compartment or people in the same row. 5. You call your physician and/or go there the first/next day. 6. No clue.

Additions: 3. "Bare walls" vs. wallpaper (woodchip or vinyl) -> you can't paint over the "bare walls" that often without completely re-priming the walls. After 3 or 4 coats the color doesn't last anymore, while the wallpaper may only fall off after 8-10 coats ;) 4. In smaller towns/communities, greetings are more common on the street. In the north you often get a curt "Moin" to hear. 5. In addition, some general practitioners also make house calls in such cases. 6.Perhaps a lemon slice is not added because the majority does not eat it anyway and it is too cumbersome to remove these pieces of fruit.

Here's one answer: The Oktoberfest goes back to die wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese, which was on October 12th 1810. Originally, the Oktoberfest was a horse race on October 17th of that year. So it was in October. Towards the end of the 19th century, the event was moved forward to start in the middle of September in order to benefit from the better weather in that period but it kept its name, Oktoberfest.

The doctors note on the first day is due to the fact that there are unlimited sick days in Germany. And of course, there are a few who took advantage of that. We used to call it the "Monday sickness" or the "football match sickness". The the rules had to be made stricter. Some people would literally call in sick at least once a months on Fridays to get themselves a long weekend ;)

This works only since Corona hit us. And it was extended for the time being. And it will be rescinded or ended when Corona will be done with as a big thing. A doctor's note by phone was and will be illegal. The doctor has to see you to determine whether you are sick enough to have to stay at home. To make this easier the three-days-rule without a note was established. What I do is to either call the doctor to visit and examine me at home or go to him as soon as I can do it. Either way I send the Krankschreibung per mail to my employer. The doctor will state the beginning of his stay-at-home sick leave note with the date of him seeing me. If I can't get the doc to see me or I visit him, so be it.

@@j.a.1721 most general doctors actually do make "hausbesuche" those are usually reserved for people who are "multimorbide" and elderly people who have no other way to visit their hausarzt...it's a burden for us since we have to make the time somehow but I've not yet worked with someone who doesn't make hausbesuche...so if you have a sick grandma we will come over...but if you are too sick to just walk over to the doctors office you most likely should even go to the hospital or call 116117 - they will visit you as well

Actually your Hausarzt is allowed to backdate(?) your Krankschreibung for two or three days. So if you are sick from Tuesday to Thursday and you see your doctor on Thursday he can give you a Krankschreibung from Tuesday to Thursday. I think this is even possible on a Monday after you were ill on Friday only. But it depends on your employer, sometimes they want to receive the Krankschreibung on the first day

Doctor's note: If I'm really sick, I call my Hausarzt, and his office prints my Krankmeldung without the doctor seeing me. This has to be at my employer's office on day 3 of my illness. If I am too poorly to pick it up myself, my husband will get it for me, or the doctor's office will send it via mail. Next, I make a scan and email the scan to my boss. The paper Krankmeldung follows with snail mail: however fast snail mail is able to bring it to my house first, and then to the company I work for. If this does not work out within 3 days - that's not my fault.

Leichathletik is track and field as you say, but no weightlifting etc. (literally Schwerathletik, although the term is not often used) - there is a good description on the German wikipedia page. Oktoberfest was first celebrated in honour of the mariage of Kronprinz Ludwig von Bayern und Prinzessin Therese (Oct 12th 1810), hence the name. But since the weather in Munich is not all that stable and warm in October, celebration have since shifted to start in September. Rauhfaser can be painted over multiple times and still has a texture. You won't even see a bad paint job or (more importantly) an uneven wall because of the structure (created by the wood chips). See, on drywall it should be easy to get a smooth and even wall surface. On a stone or concrete wall that's finished with plaster that's a bit harder to do, so walls are not always perfectly smooth.

@MichaEl-rh1kv

#1 It's called Leichtathletik because it is not Schwerathletik, which is mainly "Kraftsport" (Weightlifting, Powerlifting, Bodybuilding and so on), but also some strength-oriented combat sports (wrestling, boxing, ...). #2 The first Oktoberfest was around the wedding of crown prince Ludwig I of Bavaria with Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen at October 12th in 1810, with festivities starting at least a week before and ending a week after. The festivities were repeated every following year (except 1813 because of the Napoleonic wars, 1854 and 1873 because of Cholera, 1866 because of the Prussian-German war and 1870 because of the Franco-Prussian war) and became bigger every year after 1870. The duration was extended, and because of the better weather it started now in September (utilizing the "Altweibersommer" = Indian Summer). #3 This type of wallpaper is known as "Raufaser-Tapete". It was invented in 1864 and is thought to be painted after applying it (or as part of a renovation) - it makes it easier to remove old paint and put new paint on the wall. Since many old walls have already bumbs and notches, the structure of the wallpaper integrates and hides such unevennesses without the need of replastering. #4 Germans greet people they share a (small) room with for some time. A bus does - as a rule - not fulfill that criteria. ;) #5 Good employers will not expect the doctor's note before the third sick day. Unfortunately many "modern" enterprises, especially some so-called startups, are not good in employing people (one of the reasons they have high labour turnover). But if you have a family doctor / a physician you regulary visit, they will often be willing to give you a short-term note after a consultation by phone and making an appointment as soon as you are able to come - in some cases they could even visit you at home, but that is nowadays only an exception, while in former times it was the rule. #6 Lemonade is simply not a thing in Germany. We never had enough lemons to develop a lemonade culture. Actually there was once a lemon trader in my town. As she died the most valuable part of her inheritance were the dozen or so crates of not-so-fresh lemons in her house. (That was long ago, however. ;) )

"Rauhfaser" breaks the light and makes the room light more fuzzy, which again makes it appear bigger. Also it hides small errors like smudges and pin holes. Get a needle role and roll the old tapestry thoroughly then spray it with water and give it 30 minutes to soak in... after this you can pull down the tapestry just like that. In many cases it comes off on its own ;) If you are sick 1 day you do not need a doctors note by law no matter what you company states. But you need to inform your company about you being out sick. If you are sick for longer you need a doctors note, but you have a week time to present it to the office, enough time to send it with the postal service. Many companies accept E-Mail notes providing the original note after the sick leave. If you are sick more than 1 day, you are expected to see a doctor anyway, to make sure that you recover asap and can get back to work asap. Anything else would be considered lazy leave instead of sick leave ;)

Leichtathletik (running, jumping, throwing) is named in contrast to Schwerathletik (pulling and pushing heavy"=schwer" weights or wrestling) as it depends more on agility and stamina than power and force. Also people doing it, are typically more light weighted than the people doing power lifting. Exception confirms the average rule as we say. The greeting in bus is the same in France as in Canada and I found it quite polite and nice, but indeed it is very unusual in Germany. You can say "Guten Tag" when you pass through the drivers's door but normally nothing if leaving or using other doors. I think it has to do with the fact that it is seen as public space, while doctor's is seen more as a private area like a flat. It fits to the general habit to be more decent (or you might say unfriendly) in public, but open up under friends. But I have no final answer here. For the lemonade you have to ask for "Zitronenlimo" oder "weiße Limo". Here in Austria we also often have "Soda Zitrone" which is much less sweet than German Zitronenlimo as the latter normally contains lot's of suger.

Frage beantworten. Ich habe dazu u.a.

Why Raufaser wallpaper? Two easy reasons: If you paint directly on the wall it is a mess ans massive complicated to clean the wall when you are finalley leave the appartment. It is difficult to paint over a darker color and the wall gets thicker and thicker. And the wallpaper protects the wall to be destroyed or damaged too massively. And second: If the wall is already damaged, the wood in the wallpaper gives it a structure, that maskes this liitle damages already in the wall. Furthermore you can put more layers of paint on it without changing it every time as long the color is not massively brighter than before or too many layers are on it. And then you can change it easier asnd faster than any other way to clean a wall. That is what it was developed for. So you are wrong. It saves a lot of time and effort unlessy you are the one who wants/have to change it ;) .

‘lemonade’ is just another english word that Germans got/use wrong, just like “moderator” (aka ‘host’) or the well known “handy” (aka ‘mobile phone’). It‘s probably just too similar to “Limonade” and so it’s used in the same general way as the German “Limonade”.

Woodchip-wallpaper: I think this has a history that comes from older times, where no wall was flat and even. The chaotic texture of this wallpaper is good to hide imperfections to the eye. Imperfections in the cement behind it and imperfections in the paint before it. The effect is similar to the good old "Leimfarbe" (thick jelly style paint, which was given a texture with special tools). Maybe today with mirror-flat walls this is unnecessary, but some like it because this is how a wall must look like...

6: Strictly speaking the french invented the word and yes, it included limon (i.e. lemon). However, as often found with borrowed words, the meaning was broadened to include other things. In this case anything fruity. To be fair though, most lemonades do contain a bit of citric acid, to make the sweetness more palatable. So in that sense, there is still a lemon aspect to it.

Fun fact about greetings outdoor. First it depends a lot on where you actually are. Pretty complicated but it works. Now the fun fact: Englischer Garten munich 19thcentury: it was asked for, to only greet people that you really know. The Argument: this is a place of leisure, and if you are always greeting (lifting the Hat, bow, correct adress etc.) you will never have leisure. I feel a little of this is part of contemporary culture. I like it.

I'm German and lived in the UK for a while where I also noticed that people greet the bus driver when they enter the bus and say thank you when they step off. I liked it and did the same of course as otherwise people around me probably would have considered me to be rude. I wouldn't though do the same in Germany. There is one specific reason for that: buses look different here and over there. In the UK (and this is in the Bristol-Bath-Somerset area where I lived, but I guess it's the same in other areas) most buses had only one door. So you step on at the front and leave at the front. Both times you pass the driver. It makes sense that you acknowledge him with a hello and thank you. In Germany we have and had always two doors, sometimes now even three. We should step on at the front and show our ticket, but that wasn't always so and since corona it's not really like that any more. So we mostly step on in the middle or at the back. Where we also leave the bus again. In most buses you are not even allowed to leave at the front. So we don't come near the driver - why should we shout through the whole bus "THANK YOU!!!" when we leave at the back of the bus? So we don't do that. I think the different construction of the buses led to different customs.

I have no idea why people don´t thank the bus driver here in Germany. I don´t do it everytime, but often, and sometimes feel weird about it. When I visited Australia, people frequently did and I loved it. It didn´t feel weird at all and I thought "*that* is how to treat someone who just took you to where you wanted to go" :-)

If I wait at the bus stop and the busdriver opens the doors, I never say "Thank you", but if I'm late, the driver waits and opens the door then I say it, cause at this time it makes sense and it's polite. In Germany for example you open a door for a woman, older persons or so, so that they can go/in out a room, you hear "Thank you" (Danke), cause it's polite to open the door and say it. Whitout sense no "Thank you" 🤷

Jenna, you know that Germans love long words, precision, and clubs („Vereine“) - Leichtathletik is an example for this. The dilemma: how to name a Verein that deals with field athletics exclusively? The German answer: Leichtathletikverein. Btw. - I say Hallo both at the Doctor‘s, to the bus driver and (most often) to co-passengers. But not everyone „bekommt die Zähne auseinander“ and answers accordingly. On the other hand - it was so annoying hiking in the mountains in the US or Canada and having - exhausted as I felt after miles and miles of hiking - to use my last breath for that „Hi, how are you doing?“

I used to thank the bus driver when living in England. Since it was a rural area it would have been rude not to. Most of the time I was the only one getting on the bus or getting off, so being quiet would have been strange. I always have the urge in Germany, but in Berlin I would get looked at as being crazy. Instead I try to say hello and good bye to the driver.

I think in Germany it depends on how full the bus is. In a city, where maybe twenty people enter and exit the bus on each stop it would probably drive people insane, but "out in the sticks", when you have been the only person in the bus for the last couple of stops it happens in Germany, too. ;-)

so about the "raufasertapete", its used here in germany because it hides many of the flaws in the wall. if you just want to paint your wall you have to have a very smoth wall. In the US you could just swap out the dry wall if there is any damage, here you have to fix every little unevenness. If you put up a plain wall paper it hides some of the flaws and "Raufaser" hides even more, in most cases you don´t even have to take the old wallpapers down.

concerning the doctors note. As of the 1st of June the remote over the phone doctors note is not a thing anymore. But for your employer it's only important that the doctors note includes the date you first missed work. I do believe doctors can back date the notes 2 or three days. because many doctors are at least closed one day a week (for either private insured only or house visits) so you wouldn't be able to go that day to get a notice. So you can go the next day and your note would read something like that. Start of sickness: date X1 Diagnosed on: Date X2 Expected recovery: Date X5. Date of the diagnosis and the start of the "arbeitsunfähigkeit" therefore don't necessarily need to be on the same day. And doctors tend to prefer you not come in when actively throwing up or having diarrhea because of combination and other patients and staff. Best is call or write an email to your doctor how to proceed in those cases.

Schwerathletik is anything that is focused on really muscular stuff, like bodybuilding or weightlifting. So, Leichtathletik is called leicht, because you are not doing stuff, for which you need big muscles, lifting big things, but instead you need a lot of endurance and a type of strength, that does not focus on heavy stuff.

Bzgl.

"... I don`t want wallpaper, I just want a wall... make me my wall and I paint it white ... that`s all I need" = that`s exactly what I like, want and do either ... and I`m a German ... apart from the white color which I don't like on walls at all, because for me there is no more boring color than white on the walls in an apartment, but tastes differ I'm not typically German because I don't need and want wallpaper on the walls and because I have furniture in the rooms and photos or pictures on the walls, you don't see much of any wallpaper anyway. I don't need curtains for the windows either, because sunlight should come into the apartment through the windows, so I don't hang anything in front of them and to keep curios eyes away from the always curious neighbors I have roller blinds that I can then lower if needed. The "Raufasertapete" is so popular in Germany because nearly anyone can stick it to the wall relatively quickly and easily. You can and should then paint this special wallpaper with any color of your choice. Wallpaper made of other materials or patterned wallpaper is much more difficult to use for the non-professionals. If you want to tear off wallpaper, especially "Rauhfasertapete", you should first moisten the respective area with warm water and a little washing-up liquid in it - there are special larger sponges for this work available in DIY stores - and let it take effect for a short period of time, then removing the old wallpaper using a spatula to lift them up and then slowly peeling them off by hand is much easier because the wallpaper is then soaked and can be removed more easily and usually in larger pieces. As an alternative to water, there are also special liquids available in DIY stores for this purpose, which actually often work more effective, but noone knows why I guess, neither do I. As soon as you notice that the wallpaper is drying again while tearing it off, moisten it again and again in between. In this way, you tear off the entire wallpaper on one wall step by step, the wall itself is always only worked on in smaller areas.

One should never be ashamed of questions, some of which have already been answered very well. I found an addition to athletics, in the Greek origin "light" does not mean effort, but natural movement sequences that humans already do, such as the long jump, discus throw and high jump?!? Mhmm, except in physical education, I would never have thought of voluntarily performing the necessary movements of the latter two. Heavy Athletics are wrestling, weightlifting, etc. With regard to woodchip it should also be mentioned that in addition to being painted over several times, the thing can also be torn off. This is definitely recommended if you decide to paint your room completely black. The next tenants will be happy. Bus drivers are not greeted, but patients in the waiting room are. I suspect a logical background. Germans only greet strangers in very specific situations anyway. Bus drivers are not one of them, a waiting room situation is a different caliber. You meet fellow sufferers in the waiting room and you greet them out of solidarity, possibly also with the question of who was there last. Originally, lemonade also meant a drink made from citrus fruits. The definition includes at least 7% sugar, the fruit juice content is 15% for lemonades made from pome fruit or grape juice, 3% for lemonades made from citrus juices, 5% for lemonades made from other fruit juices.

I have 3 different meds for cardiovascular (had a heart bypass in 2013), 1 med for enlarged (benign) prostate, 1 med to control cholesterol (because I can't tolerate statins), and 1 blood thinner to prevent blood clots in the brain if I get afib. I don't pay anything. I've never checked how much these would cost on the open market, but we're probably talking about several hundred pounds a month. People under the age of 60 have to pay £9.35 per medication, unless they are unemployed or on very low wages. That's per medication, so if the doctor writes a prescription for 2 items, then it's £18.70 bitte schön.

We even pronounce English loan words such as "computer" in a slightly more German way. You don't have to overdo it. Also, come to think of it, we would default to the British pronunciation, so "Kompjuta" rather than "Kampjudr". So "Wie-dee-o", not "Widde-yo". I hope my Germanised pronunciation guide is not roo confusing. English version: cohmpyootah, not comepyoodrr V-deh-oh (v day oh?), not viddyo I hadn't noticed you saying "computer" wrong, that part was just for illustrative purposes.

As someone commented, if you do it right, it is fairly easy to remove (steam or warm water). I once had an appartment that had a vinyl coated wallpaper. That was lots of fun to get rid of. In the US you have different construction and the drywall has a plaster on it. Regarding the doctor's note, it's very unusual to have to have note from day 1. You usuallly only need one from the 3rd day. The exception is sometimes Friday or Monday for obvious reasons.

Leichtathleten - the heavy athletes are the ladies at the Russian Bolshoi Ballet. +wink+ +smirk+ The last heavy atlete were show as Major Iceberg in the movie "the 5th element". Oktoberfest is called so, so that all the tourists are late and the Germans can drink the beer alone. And in the tents is then also more place. But there are much better events in Germany... Rough wallpaper (woodchips included wallpaper): This wallpaper is easier to work with and easier to remove. And on rough walls the structure of the wallpaper hides the fact that the wall is uneven. (not kidding) There is a sign next to the driver that tells you "don't talk to the driver while (s)he is driving". No, just kidding... The sign tells you "don't mention the war!"... or was it "remember the first rule of the fight club"? No, honestly: Germans are not that polite and they are not used to your politeness. But please stay that way. May things change sometimes. I greet everyone in the pedestrian zone with a little smile and a nod and a quiet hello and meanwhile there are people who greet back. Sick leave can be called in because a company has experienced workers abusing the easy solution. But you can also call the doctor and get a retroactive sick note the next day. In Deutschlang lemons were not common for a very long time and there were only available citrons. And Germany does not have such a great lemonade culture like the nations were lemons were easy to get for decades. That is why we developed Oktoberfest and Beergardens and Radler. And that is why young adults can get a beer when they are 16.

You don't need a doctor's notice when you're sick for the first two days of your sickness, that means, you have some time and can wait with that, until you're doing a bit better. Also, after two days have passed, you don't have to immediately hand in your doctor's notice, you can also hand it in later. If you're sick for only two days, you don't need that at all.

Oktober. Auf dieses geht das Oktoberfest zurück. Kronprinz Ludwig (1786-1868), later King Ludwig I (reign: 1825-1848), married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on 12 October 1810. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates to celebrate the royal event. The fields were named Theresienwiese ("Theresa's Meadow") in honour of the Crown Princess, and have kept that name ever since, although the locals have abbreviated the name simply to Wiesn.[3] Horse races, in the tradition of the 15th-century Scharlachrennen (Scarlet Race at Karlstor), were held on 18 October to honor the newlyweds. Now I wonder if the German or English article is correct! The Wiesn usually ends on the Sunday of the first weekend fully in October. You either call your Hausarzt/family doctor or 116117 (medizinischer Notdienst)!

This is so neat! I think most people have also agreed on the October 17th date, so the German text must be the correct one! 🙃

It´s called "Leichtathletik" because they are not only specialised to only one but multiple disciplines. Of course they are all athletes and are very well trained. But mostly if they compare one of their abilities or disciplines to athletes who are only doing this "one" discipline for life then they often cannot bring the same results. Otherwise the "Schwerathlet" who is specialised and trained much much harder (because he has the time and does not have to train on other abilities) on one discipline should do one of the other in which he is not trained he will of course fail against a "Leichtathlet". Simply said the "Leichtathlet" is an allrounder for a lot of disciplines but is not able to train as "hard" as a "Schwerathlet" on only one discipline. But compared to us (normal people) a "Leichtathlet" is also much more powerfull in all his disciplines. To your point with the doctors note: It is mostoly very easy to get a note if you don´t overdo it and you try to get a note every month or so. If you feel ill, like you vomited the hole night and do not feel fit as usual it allways has to be for a reason. And most of the german employers then say to you: "Stay at home and get well instead of working while you maybe develop a caught or whatever and risk to infect your coworkers". Most employers realized that is it cheaper for them that one person is missing for the one or the rest of the week instead of much more infected workers. Of course if you overdo it and you require a note frequently than not only the doctor but also the employers are getting curious and try to figure out where is the problem, what are the reasons of you getting sick so often and so on. And if this continues without a plausible reason then of course everyone involved are starting to get suspicous. But first of all you and mostly all should have something what we called a "Vetrauensvorschuss". If not then your employer is in my opinion questionable... I know it is a lot text but I hope this can help you clarify some questions of yours.

Wallpaper: I think that must be a regional or generational thing. We haven‘t had wallpapers in over 10 years. They are too much of a bother. Just use Putz and Paint and it looks way better. The wood chip thing is about esthetics, I think. But that‘s debatable. I know my parents liked it, when I was younger… Doctors office waiting room: I‘m with you on that
