#3, in a pinch sure but to ensure the life of the sole and get a great grip the best move is to head to the cobbler and have them put on this rubber half soles. I do it for all my new shoes. This way as the rubber sole wears down you replace it and the leather never gets touched. If you've got at least 5 pair in rotation this could mean years before replacing half soles (heel wear varies as well but those are already rubber it combination leather/rubber on most good shoes.) My cobbler charged 20 bucks for a pair.
