Here's 6 Signs of a Dying Car Battery that tend to be the most common when a car battery is at the end of its' life. Check it out and be sure to check the other tips I have available on my channel!
Car batteries typically only have an average life span around 3 to 4 years so you may start to notice more of these symptoms around that time.
Summer temperatures also wreak havoc on a battery and lower their capacity which can then be noticed in the winter when they don't have enough cold cranking amps to start your vehicle. In some heat prone areas batteries may have to be replaced every year.
Keep in mind that most big brand auto parts stores can load test your battery for you for free to help you decide if it's time to buy a new one or not!
Here's a neat, inexpensive battery tester from Amazon*

TIME TO CHANGE YOUR BATTERY 1. Checking time of purchase of battery or taking note of purchase of battery 2. Check for the short clunks when turning on the car. 3. Check for dashboard signs - for blinking symbols - (windows going down slowly, car chargers, lights not drawing power, extra cables) 4. Raise the hood and check the battery for any signs of corrosion. Try cleaning, test and make the right decision. 5. Bulging or swelling of the battery in any of it's sides. 6. Any weird smell from the battery - egg like smell or smoke like issues from the battery.

I mark the date on the battery when I install it and after 4 years, it gets changed regardless if it's acting funny or not. Four years on a battery is decent. I don't want to be stranded somewhere at 10:00 pm at night because the car won't start. I like to do it on my time and in my garage...not some parking space in a mall or restaurant. Good Video!

The lights turn on, It sounds like it might start, but no engine start-up. How does one distinguish this from a faulty ignition switch? This video really helped, it kind of points toward a battery issue. Thank you for this info.

Determining if your problem is caused by the battery, the ignition or starter etc can be pretty tricky. I usually go off the rule of thumb to start by checking the battery as they are the part that needs changing much more frequently. Hope you got it all lined out!

I woke up to a dead battery. So I charged it and checked the voltage. 12.6 volts. Car ran great. Got home and tried to start the car and nothing. Dead again. Charged it once again and let the car go to sleep. I've been checking the voltage once an hour for the last 7 hours. Holding steady at 12.6. When I open the door and wake up the car the voltage drops 2 volts immediately. I'm thinking at this point that my battery can only hold voltage with no draw at all. Any draw whatsoever... even just opening the door and waking it up causes the battery to immediately lose 2 volts... enough to not turn the car over. I've looked for a parasitic draw and found none. No added accessories at all. I never use it to charge anything. Do you think my battery is shot? I do. Thanks for the help buddy!!

My Duralast battery was only one year and 7 seven months old and I started experiencing slow cranking. The battery was only registering 12.28 volts after sitting overnight. I tested it and it said to replace battery. Need less to say that will probably be my last Duralast battery I ever buy. The production date on that Duralast battery was 4/18.

Yeah batteries have been rough lately it seems. You either get one that lasts 4 years or one that lasts 1. I'd recommend buying one with the best cost to warranty ratio at the time so that you can swap it if it fails prematurely.

The Bosch battery in my car is about 2 years old, and I started having problems with the ABS acting up randomly, especially when I used the headlights or turn signals at high revs (I drive a manual, BTW). The odometer and radio display would even flicker a little. ABS was fine according to the mechanic, but I had some electrical issues that needed fixing (several trouble codes showed up), but the problems cropped up again recently. A few weeks ago, I got the battery and alternator tested and they were fine, but needed charging. Got the battery charged up at O'Reilly and so far, no problems. Didn't cost me a thing, either! I probably need a new one about a year later.

I basically had the same problem with my battery. Last month when I was on my way to the store, my car died so I got my multimeter out and I checked the voltage on the battery and it was 9.7378 Volts so I thought “what the heck is going on with this battery”, the next thing I knew I seen some smoke coming from the tips of the battery terminals. I was suspicious on what was going on and I couldn't believe it because this battery was only barely 16 years old which I consider fairly new in today's society, so basically what I want to do is try to clean up the battery with some soap and salt solution and then I might put it on the charger for two or three minutes at a high current rate just to see if it will hold a charge. I'm not sure if that's going to help the battery or not but one thing's for certain before I go out and buy a new battery, I'm definitely going to try these two methods that I suggested. Now on the other hand I could swap the battery out with one from my 1962 Chevy Tahoe but I'm not sure that my old lady would let me do that, so basically what I need to do is first, I'm going to check all the air in the tires before I monkey around with the battery. Then I'm probably going to run a few errands around town down and the next thing I want to do is get some paint and paint the battery terminals because I don't think they look very good without the neon yellow color look on them. If all goes well, I am planning to do a few other things to the terminals. Next after that chore, is get some of that distilled water and pour on the outside of the battery to try to clean up a lot of the dirt and dust its accumulated over all these years. If I have time what I'll do after that it's try to clean both sides of the mirrors on my 1965 Ford Bronco because I've noticed while I was driving that it's hard to see what kind of traffic is coming up behind me. I was having a problem with the battery when I put the headlights on low beam and then when I tried to switch the high-beam I noticed that the voltage excursions were jumping around so I went out and I bought another set of test leads to use on my digital multimeter and there was no difference at all, so I think I may borrow my friend Tony Jones's multimeter just to check those voltage excursions to see if that is normal. Nobody really explained to me how to test a DC voltage excursions when the battery is not in its prime. I am all on my own doing this. A lot of people have contacting me and they said that they've had that problem once or twice and maybe even three times in their lifetime with their batteries but they did something totally different. What they did was loosen the terminals first then they carefully remove the battery and hoisted it out to get rid of all the debris and dirt that's accumulated after all these years then they put it on a slow charge which I believe they told me was 32 milliamps for 6 days, 3 hours and 54 seconds. Next they took the battery caps off and added some distilled water, which they claimed that they bought it at their local Walmart store. I think, if I can remember correctly, they said it was .99 cents plus the sales tax. Can you believe that just 99cents? That's a real good price for one full gallon of distilled water. Speaking of water, yesterday I helped my neighbor that lives to the right side of my house, fill their swimming pool for the new season. It literally took 7 hours to fill. I am not sure how many gallons it is. I have met people in my lifetime that had no idea that there were 4 quarts of water in a gallon jug. They just assumed it was a gallon only. I am not really good at math but I do have a calculator on my cell phone. Speaking of math, it takes me back to grade 11 in high school when my teacher, Mr. Lowry gave us a sneak quiz on algebra. I failed it because I didn't understand what that was all about. I spent most of my high school time stoned and kinda out of it. Some of my classmates were very good at math, and it even showed when they got their report cards. I may have gotten of the path of whatever we were initially talking about. I think it had something to do with blue cheese. No, I remember now, it was car batteries. I never could figure out why they put car batteries in the front of the vehicle and not inside the vehicle. It would be so much easier to work on them, especially in the rain, if they were inside the vehicle. Doesn't that make more sense to you too? Well anyhow, batteries are pretty heavy for their size and some people can't lift them very good. I had a fried, Tony Smith who had asthma and once he tried to lift out his car battery, and sneezed, and the battery fell out of his hands and landed on his right baby toe. It broke the small bones in that toe of his. I called his mothers step daughter Ann but she was not home. So I then called his brothers uncle Fred and told him about what just happened to Tony's toe. He seamed like he was drunk and started laughing at me and said “I don't care about that Bast#$ds toe”. I got mad and hung up on him immediately. From that day on, I never spoke to Tony's brother's uncle Fred. I never really liked him in the first place bacause when Tony and I were 13 years old, we were at a softball game and Fred walked over to us and farted right in our faces. That was not very nice of that old pervert. I heard some stories about him when he was about 20 years old that would make you cringe if you heard them, but I can't get into that right now because I have to finish up my posting here on you tube. I hope I have given you folks some good advice on having some of your problems solved in a timely manner. I like to help out when I can if it is at all possible. I am out for 3 more hours so I want to go now and get a hot dog and a bottle of grape soda. I need to look around for a ride so I can get back to my padded room at the Sinclair Insane Asylum. I hope Dr. Dilbert will not be mad at me for sneaking out....

@HSZGarage
@HSZGarage 4 жыл бұрын
It does seem a bit silly and I know many people worry about this. Most car manufacturers have a way to manually insert a piece of the fob itself into a receiver that will then start your car even if the battery in the key/fob is dead. Some manufacturers even have a small manual key that's stored within the fob itself much like a Nintendo DS stylus for this purpose as well. Rest assured there is usually a check in place. You'd have to consult your manual to lock down the specifics for your vehicle.

So sorry! Let me edit the comment. I totally responded as if you commented on a different video. Lol Yes! That can be a sign. In fact my last battery that went dead on me would dim the headlights quite noticeably when I applied the brakes. Then when I'd let off the lights would get brighter again. It's just too big of a draw for the alternator to handle alone at night. I'd get your battery and alternator tested if you get a chance!

It could be yeah. Does your vehicle start? If so, the alternator is supposed to take over for the battery from there. If it’s running and you’re having dimming issues it could be your alternator. If it never starts then that’s most likely a low or bad battery.

Sorry I'm a bit late on this. But yes, low batteries can still have enough juice sometimes to turn the engine over but may not provide enough power to other accessories. Other things to check for your AC would be wiring issues, AC compressor belts etc. Unfortunately, with stuff like that, it's a process of elimination to get to the root of the issue.

My battery still starts good . It’s leaking and only at 9 volts when running and 8 volts when i tested it in the morning. Will that be the reason why I have hesitation on throttle? Not enough volts to the computer?
@HSZGarage
@HSZGarage Жыл бұрын
It does sound like you need a new battery. Leaking is not good and the voltage is too low. You want around 12.6 when the engine is off and 14.4 when on as the alternator is turning. A faulty charging system can cause a variety of issues including low engine power or “limp mode.”

Not a problem. The battery is usually a pretty good place to start for starting issues. From my experience it's the most common problem. While you're there you can ask them to check the alternator too if the battery tests ok.

Can't ever rule the battery out. In fact, from my experience that tends to be the first thing I check or have checked. Starting issues can also be related to your starter or alternator but I'd start with the battery

eight year old battery in my BMW and no early signs of issues, but few days ago the car wouldn't start. Auto repair and AAA both said battery is holding amps, but then later on the auto repair place said it was indeed weaker than it should be, so changed it out. Car ran fine for 2 days, and then same problem back again. Now appears to be a probable Starter issue. So, could the battery and starter both have essentially died together? I realize I got my monies worth with the battery, and I'm not sure how old the starter is, but maybe just replacing things at certain pre-set fairly long intervals proactively is not such a bad idea. Like one other commenter said, it's hard for some of us to part with functioning items while they are still working.
@HSZGarage
@HSZGarage Жыл бұрын
When you start having charging system issues they can indeed domino on each other and you can have multiple go out. You see it all the time with alternators that go bad. They can sometimes overcharge the battery depending on what went out on them and so the battery goes too. Have you load tested the alternator? Is it running fine? The battery starts the vehicle and the alternator keeps it running after that while topping off the battery in an ideal functioning system.

I just got a new battery cuz mine wouldn't start the first two times I tried last night but then ended up starting and starting right up tonight as well, but I didn't want to take any chances as I bought the car used 3.5 years ago and had no idea how old the battery actually was. My heat just has been blowing out cold air forever, so I'm wondering -- and hoping -- the new battery might end up helping to solve that problem?! We'll see cuz I'm driving quite a distance tomorrow, and it's going to be cold as hell here in Chicago too, so fingers crossed.

I would recommend taking the vehicle to your local auto parts store and having both the battery and alternator tested. It's not unheard of for new alternators or even batteries to be bad. I would start there. If that's not it you can try checking out the belt and the tension on it to be sure that it's making good contact with the alternator pulley.

Hi Jovi! To answer your question it depends on the port type. Some are powered only when the key is in ignition/accessory position and others are full time. If it's the first kind then the circuit is turned off when the car is off. If it's the second type then there will be a small draw even when you have everything off.

If yours is like mine, after you shut off the ignition, the cigarette lighter still has power, and after you exit the vehicle and lock it, there is about 5 seconds before the lighter/adapter isn't lit up showing there is power. So 5 seconds on and off can add up, I take mine out usually.

@geniuspharmacist
@geniuspharmacist 3 жыл бұрын
@@itscarlosg233 although a weak/worn-out starter might sound similar there's a few minor differences. To rule out a weak battery, look at the big picture, age of the starter and age of the battery, do a free battery test at AutoZone, also a weak starter might start cranking weak but would get better as you crank while a weak battery the starter will continue to crank slow or get slower and weaker. If you jump-start a weak battery the problem would disappear unlike a worn starter. Also a weak battery could be a result of a weak alternator but usually the weak alternator would trigger your battery warning light on your dashboard...... Hope this helps
