#6 TAMIYA 1/12 RENAULT RE20 TURBO - CHASSIS ASSEMBLY II

Here is part two of our chassis build for the 1/12th scale Renault RE-20.
Overall its coming together very nicely, but I did have a few issues regarding fit that are a little disappointing.
Hopefully by highlighting these issues it will help you in your build. As much as I try to pre-fit parts you do inevitably come across problems that get quite difficult to rectify late in the assembly process. But I guess that's the fun of modeling!...cheers Mark

Hi Mark. Good to see the progress. The photo etched parts look good, I never had them when I made mine but a worthy addition, especially the brake discs. As you say it is a lovely model but the fit of some parts, as mentioned before upper and lower chassis, is not quite at the usual Tamiya standard. The masking and painting of the top bodywork took a bit of time. The demarcation between the yellow and white had to be spot on for the black pinstripe decal to line up properly. I used a photo-copy of the decal sheet as a template to cut the mask for the outline of the white/yellow seem line. Cheers, Dave.

Thanks David...Thanks for the comment. I will leave the painting of the main body till the very end as I can see fit issues down the road. Funny that when I built this in my teens none of these fit issues was a problem for me :) cheers Mark

@@MKCAUTOMODELWORKS Fit issues, I think I mentioned I had fit issues in a previous comment. I had to remove a bit of the upper bodywork next to the exhaust and waste-gate pipes to get the body to sit in place better. Maybe it was me not getting the exhaust elements in the right place. Nobody without interment knowledge of the RE20 would know adjustments have been made. It's a shame that you cannot attach photos to replies as I could show you how I resloved the fit issue. Dave.

This (in my view) is the most difficult of the Tamiya 1/12 builds. Not because of Tamiya but the subject. Do NOT get the Protar version...it is a nightmare!

Hi ekspatriat...yes that's pretty much my view as well regarding the Tamiya kit. Did you build the Italeri re-release version of the Protar kit or was it a old version? cheers Mark

@@MKCAUTOMODELWORKS It was the rare (very) 'Metal' edition. After building the Tamiya one years ago I thought i'd give it a try. I took a look through the kit and dry-fitted. I realised it was going to be a nightmare. I kept it for 5 years and sold it for 6 times more than I paid for it.

The Protar one IS A NIGHTMARE! I never finished it! Tamiyas is way better!
