Just a tip, my friend who welds aircraft exhaust systems says using a graphite pencil will cause them to crack on the line. He uses a Silverwriter pencil, a colored pencil with silver lead. I think a fine felt tip marker like Pentel brand would also work? He has been at it for 40 years now...hope this helps on any high heat applications like jet exhaust systems.....Carry On....PB

what i also like is that you keep argon-sheelding when you terminate your welds. Since i also do maintainence welding - guess where a seem will leak if it has not been sheelded properly. Nicelly done, good seems with proper roots.

Do you run a taper through the pipe connector so that you can compensate for shrinkage, or does it only shrink in the bottom where the weld is? Do you experience that the plug on stainless steel can get stuck in the threads after it's welded and cools down? I worked at a nickel refinery as a mechanic, and would often do simple welding-jobs, most of the time arc or tig-welding stainless steel, I even tried titanium a few times. I remember when I welded pipe connectors I would usually have to run a taper through after the welding job, if I would run it through a plate/flange and weld on both sides. I've had a lot of instances where stainless steel bolts/nuts cold weld, so I got concerned when I watched you weld.

You can't weld nipple directly on previously made weld. The heat affected zone is +-25mm from each weld root. So, there shall be minimum 50mm distance between nipple wall and pipe circ. weld.

Both are just as important! They are your signiture of who you are, and how you fit your fab. work! Anytime you have an oval shape fitting to fit to your most round fitting add more tacks and pull the oval out.
@liamjenkins82
@liamjenkins82 Жыл бұрын
Not sure if you did. But after your root. Let the pipe cool right down before doing hot pass or cap. Leave the gas running, helps it cool. Then your cap will come out a lot cleaner. Also keep your filler in the gas shielding, looked as if you where pulling it out a bit far. Nice root. As long as it's sweet on the inside. All is good

Seems like after each dip u r retracting the rod too much and outside the gas shield, causing rod to get oxidation. Next dip introduces oxides into the weld pool.

Relax your wrist more on that torch position! your heat shows me that you're trying to catch up with your root all in one pass! Burning too hot for the gas you're using, your tungsten is carrying the heat spread too far from the point objective!

Please sharpen your tungsten more to a very sharp point! You need to know one important thing? That is to measure your gas cup inside diameter and divide by 2 that's your stick out from gas cup end.With that heat you need 3.2 filer rod, and your gas to purge burns hotter than your argon gas! That being said your welds on your cover show you're too hot! Using that combo of gases you must let that cool down after every pass! Try running with about 68 to 73 amps.
@kf8575
@kf8575 3 жыл бұрын
We use 1.6mm rods for root pass, a 3-4mm gap (on 6" pipe and above) and root at around 85-90 amps. (AWS and EN1090 class4 approved procedure, along with Nuclear approved procedures.) Most often use a size 6 ceramic with about 8mm or so of stickout. 2.4mm grey tip ceriated tungsten. Sharpened with a taper about 6mm long then the very tip flattened off. Then up to a size 8 ceramic with about 10mm stickout, 2.4mm filler and 150-160amps for hotpass. Fill passes between 150 and 180 and usually i go back down to 150 to cap off. When welding 8" and above especially sched40 and heavier, fill passes are at 200amps still with a 2.4mm filler. So are we going about it wrong then? Before you answer btw, every single stainless job we do is subjected to a minimum of 10% radiography or DPI for slip on flanges and olets or other fillets, with around half of the jobs being 100%. Also quite often although not always, welds are also PMI checked especially on the nuclear side, to check the material composition of the finished weld. Personally have only had 2 repairs on stainless in the last year, one in the workshop and one out on site at a chemical plant. Also Talking about purging gases, Nitrogen doesnt "burn" and is the preferred gas for purging super duplex grades such as xeron 100.
