Thanks for the video! One thing I would definitely add to this list is an "eggrider". The factory settings on the BBSHD leave a lot to be desired and by tweaking these, you can get a night and day improvement on how the motor runs. *WARNING * This should be done with extreme care after doing the proper research as you can bugger up the controller if you don't know what you're doing! It's really not that hard to tweak though and well worth it. The only problem is, in order to tweak the motor, you normally have to connect it, via a special USB/COM cable to your laptop which is a real pain, especially when it comes to fine adjustment. This is where the "eggrider" comes in! It allows you to reprogram the unit on the fly via your mobile phone, so it's really easy to tweak and test, tweak and test. It also gives you two, quickly switchable modes which you can use for a street legal mode and a not so street legal mode! ;) It has quite a few other features too. Sorry for all the "tweaks"! 8)

G'day Kyle, hope you are well mate. I watched some of your video then I made a decision to purchase BBSHD with 48v battery 6 months ago, installed on my Merida Crossway 40. I still remember on my first riding, it was just fantastic, a while new world. The 2 years old factory optioned Kenda tires didn't have any issues before however they were punctured within the next few weeks so I let them go. I bought specialized sawtooth 2bliss tires (I love this one the most) after that but ended within 2 months, the next one was Schwalbe Energizer plus greenguard, then now Continental ridetour. I think it is the time to move to TUBELESS. What do you reckon? Cheers, Jin

Can you help..? I have tried every full color display that is offered by Bafang.. Problem: every review is done inside and they look beautiful and clear... BUT..Once you take them out into the full sunlight (where you would actually use your ebike) the display is impossible to see.. Do you know if there are compatible displays for Bafang that are "SunLight Readable"..? I need to monitor my wattage consumption, Speed and Power level to match it to the best gear... I have a Solar Trailer and i need to optimize by using the least watts. I have not tried the DC-P18c or the TFT-850c yet... they are expensive and once you put them on the bike you can't return them. I can't keep wasting money trying every display that bafang offers. LOLI notice that you even filmed this in the shade of the building.. Or do you know if they offer a display like the 961 or 965 with a Watt/volt/speed indicator.. Those don't have any visibility problems.. :). Thanks Robb PDX USA

Just little more insight to the sensors. You don't need any. I do suggest as I call it the front brake/clutch. Thats all you need. Bike is way more manageable without sensors. For power control. Motor stops on its own with just small back peddle or my only sensor. Which I only use under extreme conditions. I change gear all time no sensor make sure you have lockout on your derailleur. Try get best chain. Im running 2018 giant trance 2 full suspension 150mm travel f n b. Trail enduro mtb. 2nd build not alot bikes out there keep up. Ebike power notgimg like it. Once you can handle the additional weight. Ill try shoot pic. 41mph with just control options snaller wheels on 27.5 and such. Try shoot a pic.

I would also say, an “eggrider” for better info, minimalist design and the ability to reprogram the controller on the fly (without a laptop). A Cycle Analyst is also a great compliment to the Bafang displays. A possibly “long term” investment and perfect compliment to the BBSHD is the Rohloff gear hub. Perfect chain line and higher and lower gear ratios than most derrailuers. Also less prone to damage.
@MYANTIHEROES
@MYANTIHEROES 3 жыл бұрын
EggRider is the best . Its in depth tweaking really makes you feel in control. Especially being able to control throttle ramp. Also it is tiny . I am into minimalism when it comes to the display , small is discreet and doesnt shout out 'steal me'
@mick2d2
@mick2d2 3 жыл бұрын
@@MYANTIHEROES I agree. The only downside, is I don't think it reads the battery with the same precision as the Cycle Analyst, although, once you've properly tested your battery, and are clear on it's power, limitations etc, I suppose this isn't such a problem.
@MYANTIHEROES
@MYANTIHEROES 3 жыл бұрын
I might have to look into a Rohloff . I switched to single speed because I was snapping too many 8-10 speed chains which cannot stand the torque of the motor. Also the mechanics of a chain flying through a very delicate derailleur at 30-35 mph whilst hammering over road potholes or off road is somewhat scary , the chain below was flapping around jumping off all the time. A chain guide is crucial for this and they attach to the bottom bracket , ISCG05 for most modern MTB or just make your own to stop the slack from the oversized long MTB derailleurs. I use a Paul Melvin tensioner instead of a derailleur and a Connex single speed chain otherwise carrying a chain splitter with you is a must for when you are 10 miles from home and your 10 speed chain bends and snaps . 10 speed chains by design are very weak because the design has to be so thin to go through the derailleur and also fit onto the thin gears on the cassette.
@MYANTIHEROES
@MYANTIHEROES 3 жыл бұрын
@@mick2d2 Yes and I run a 52v battery , so I don't look at percentage power left , I look at voltage because most displays are made for 48v batteries. The EggRider has a very interesting feature where you can immobilize the power with your cell phone. I havn't used this feature because I use a 6 pound Kryptonite chain and motorbike disc padlock every time I lock my bike up . I live in LA and its the new Bicycle theft capital of the USA .
@mick2d2
@mick2d2 3 жыл бұрын
@@MYANTIHEROES The Rohloff is quite a chunk of money short term, I think all told, with the wheel build and all the other bits and pieces it worked out to about 1400€. Saying that, I've broken two Shimano Saints (about 140€ each) and a couple of cheaper derailleurs before fitting the Rohloff. Once you badly bend a 10 speed derailleur, it's almost impossible to get it straight enough to change through all the gears again properly. I did this with both Saints, when the sacrificial piece on the frame of my bike, where the derailluer is fixed broke, sending them into the wheel, which mashed the derailluers up pretty badly. I've heard people running the Rohloff for over 100K kilometres. It's also designed to be able to be fixed, with some sacrificial elements inside that are designed to break before the gears do. It's also great to be able to do sudden huge shifts up or down, although you do need to adjust to easing off the power for the changes. You can't grind it through the gears under power, like you can with a derailleur. You also get constant chain tension, perfect chain line and can use much sturdier chains. It gives you a huge range of gears too, more than you need for the BBSHD. I've done about 5000km on mine so far. I tried the locking feature on the Eggrider once and couldn't get back in for a while, so I deactivated it. I never really let my bike out of my sight when I'm out and about, so don't need it. I use the Watt hour reading on the Cycle Analyst as my "fuel gauge".

Hey Kyle. I installed a BBSHD on a 2012 Jamis Dragon 29 a couple months ago. Since it has gotten colder the chain rolls off the chainring most times I stop pedaling. I bought a Lekki 42 tooth and same scenario. The chainring keeps turning when I stop pedaling, even with pedal assist at 0, and with the chain on the most aligned cog in the rear(4th largest in 9 speed). Would a chain guide fix? Any thoughts?

I am seriously considering converting a fat bike. I have been researching and watching lots of videos. I was going to save up and buy a production model with a rear hub motor, but after watching videos it looks like mid drive is the way to go. Problem is, I can't afford a factory built mid drive model, and I like to put things together. There is one nagging question I have regarding the speed sensor. Is there a proper place to put the magnet on the spoke or does it even matter? A follow up question: can you install a different style of speed sensor (forgot the tech term for that configuration). Thanks for your time and your easy to understand presentation.

On ebay or amazon were a lot of fat bikes with price tag between 600-1500€. Only question which grade gear they have. Somewhere here on youtube was another video about the bufang mid motors. Everything regarding e-kit what was described in this video already included in the package. On that videos people put sensor close to back shifter, less to cut pipe channels, but potentially more dirt there.

HELLO KYLE I like the TFT screen is this screen suitable on your KT controllers.??? I noticed you had the old style fashioned LCD screen on one bike and then the new Bafang TFT on your last bike shown ?? One tech question why do rear Bafang rear hubs don't have a electronic gearshift inbuilt gearbox. If theres space for a 8 speed cassette and a set of planetary gears why can't they put all bits in one unit? This would get rid of of all those shimano bits...cassettes would disappear..chains and cables and quickshiters as well. Motor and gear box together with a direct drive shaft via a reduction box to the pedals.I propose to call it a e fat velex....A bit like the old solex 2 stroke bikes in France. Ps don't forget my enquiry for those bits ....will send you photo of rear plug when it stops raining ...5 days of non stop cats and dogs and no space to get the bike stand out.😁 A good video to make would be how to fit brake lights on e fat bike using strip leds fastened to the rear frame support .😎

Patrick, that particular screen is not compatible with the KT controllers, but I do have a color display, the KT-LCD8H that is. As far as an internal gear set within the hub, Bafang does not have one. It is certainly possible however as I test rode a bike with it at Interbike this year!

As a year+ owner of a BBSHD, I agree with much of what is said here. But, IMO a cassette of gears are a waste. Both my BBSHD have been switched to 3 speed and 5 speed IGH's. The 3 speed is more than enough for most road use, and the 5 spd is perfect for hill climbs. All without ugly gear set that can get caked with mud and debris. Hydraulic brakes are a must for MTBs, but not so much for road use. Again, I chose an IGH with internal drum brakes that can not get wet or loose stopping power or get small rocks/ debris in. Drums are great for street, not so much for MTBs tho. With the numerous videos of BBSHDs out, I was hoping for some info not covered by everyone else, like light integration, puck converter uses, contoller programming, phaserunner/ ludicrous controller installation, etc. The info covered here is fairly basic. That is not meant as a bad thing. Many people can still use, and likely search for it, but with the BBSD being nearly 10 years old now, I was expecting some more up to date, and technical info. Well done otherwise.

Would there be any issue with having a 58ah battery? Would that overload the circuitry? I recently built my bike and am having troubles with it randomly shutting off. Also if there any real reason to have a speedo sensor on the bike? Does it aid in functionality?
@Area13ebikes

More ah = more range. No downside aside from cost and weight. Speedometer sensor is necessary on a mid drive like this. Won't work without it.

Kyle, I love your videos and the whole concept you're presenting here. If you're interested in I partnering with a creative drive train and power delivery systems designer who has unlocked keys to performance, efficiency and all out balls out power that can make just about any bike I've converted dust every bike you've ever showcased, I'd be willing to entertain the idea. If for no other reason than the fact that it would allow me to make more ebike Magick happen. I will be coming out with a conversion kit of each type I have designed soon, so get in touch if you think you or your customers would like bikes that are faster, have more torque, and whose battery life to range ratio is triple, we can talk. All the best to you man. Keep it up. My bikes will dust that Bafang at 48v. V-amp-Higher™
