My spring project was a BBSHD 52v 17.5a kit into a Specialized Pitch Expert 1x10 Deore bike. The kit came from Electrifybike who had everything in-stock, unlike the more popular sites that are out of everything most of the time.. I bought an Eggrider display with it so I could custom program everything easily. It makes a huge difference in ride-ability when you can alter settings to stop the wheelies and chain slams, and find the sweet spots for cadence/gearing/workout/range and comfort. For chains that will last, get the KMC E series chains, made for Ebikes. They're not cheap, my E10 was $52 but they're the strongest you can buy. So far I'm loving this thing. Ordered new tires to get rid of the mountain bike knobby's for a more of street/path/cross country tire. This is exactly the workout is was looking for when I built this. I haven't ridden a bike since 1974. I'm 65 and I had reservations that this was going to hurt, a lot. Totally unfounded it turns out. My legs were trembling after the 1st 8 mile ride for 15 min after. Now 40 miles latter, my legs are fine, and get it gets my lungs and heart working hard, but nothing ever hurts the next day like I expected. Mark at Electrifybike was terrific to work with, highly recommend.

I have a BBSHD on a Cannondale bad boy. My car stays parked most of the time when the weather is above freezing. Its the best thing I've ever built! Some day I feel like a bike and take bike paths and other days (if im late for meeting up with friends etc.) I can basically be like a motorcycle and ride with traffic around town if needed.

I´ve using my BBSHD on a fat cargo bike on a dayly basis for 2 years now; 160 to 260 kg load, 36t chainring. 52v 10ah then 21ah (made out of Samsung 35E)battery. Superb climbing capabilities even with heavy loads. No issues! Just ripped apart a cheap "sunrace" 11-46t 30$ cassette, 2 spokes and a chain after 2400km. BTW: you forgot to mention that the Bafang Ultra comes with torque sensor and the BBSHD not which is a big step back in terms of smooth pedaling
@peterwainwright5994

Fitted the bbshd into my full suspension boardman off road bike, great performance, but would recommend a gear sensor to cut off the power fractionally whilst changing gears as it is 160nm of torque! ...also recommend the lekkie type front sprocket, as it's alternate thick/thin sprocket teeth grips the chain a lot better than the stock pressed steel bafang one, another clever touch was fitting the 36v 250w sticker to keep the right side of the law! ..keep speed down and enjoy your ride!

My bbshd is running a 3200w controller with metal gears and a 52v 25ah battery and 60amps . Its a beast . They guy who made the controller tested the control and motor in a torture test and the motor just sucks it up . The battery on the otherhand gets stressed a bit running flat out going up hills . I like the bbshd because you can put it in virtually any frame you want whilst the fixed motor only suits certain frames .

Thank you for all your videos they have been very informative. I purchased a Biktrix Full Suspension and have been very happy with it, I had to make adjustments for my weight but overall I have been very happy with the bike. The reason I went with a Full Suspension bike was because hitting a bump at 35+ sucks. You mentioned that these motors can easily push 2000 to 2500 watts no problem. What is the best and safest way going about this. Thank you

I've had two Freys with Bafang Ultra for a couple years now (early adopter), a fat tire and a mid fat, and they're both awesome! I also built a frame to hold a Bafang Ultra, but beware that the mounting plate only comes in aluminum (I haven't found one in steel), and welding aluminum requires post heat treating to achieve maximum strength.

As a owner of a "tuned" BBSHD powered bike, as you already stated, the weekest part of the bike is now the trasmission (mainly chain, derailleur and cassette). Which options have you found that can work well with this much power? I mean 8-9speed (that are more then enough with this motors) with modern clutch derailleurs and wide range cassette that will last longer then normal XC bike parts... Thanks!

Im sooo tempted by the ultra, Andy Kirby is running his at 4KW and its just a beast...but.. Zero maintenance and still running original chain and sprockets without any wear after two years.

Yeah same here, done 3000 miles (4800 Km) on my 2kw hub motor and mever needed anything sorted out...DD hub motors are unbeatable in reliability and you can crank them up to double their nominal power, I could put 4kw through mine but 2kw is already more than I need.

Donald Bartholomew nireeka has two models. The Homie and the Prime. The Homie is a traditional cadence sensor hub motor bike with a 500w motor with full suspension. The Prime is their much more powerful 1000w fat tire mountain ebike, with a mid drive motor and torque sensor. No suspension but you can upgrade it to have front air suspension fork. It doesn't offer rear suspension. But that's fine bc the fat tires provide some added comfort on their own.

Hey, I just put an order in for a Biktrix juggernaut Ultra Duo 1000. From your video I think it comes with Isis crank arms rather than square tape crank arms & bottom bracket. I have some issues with my knee range of motion (lack of full bending) but I use an adaptive crank shortener. There are some good availible short ISIS cranks from the unicycle people. There are also shorter square taper cranks availible but mainly lighter duty for kids bikes. Not sure if those will fit or if they will have enough "Q" factor to clear the motor and chain stays. Anyway hopefully, I will be able to source a spare set of cranks 0r to modify to my needs. Thanks for your view

Eclipse ebikes probably sell world wide where each country has its own rules.

One small info, g520 is the code of the motor (ultra 1000w) m620 is the code of thw ecosystem, bafang recently adopted this policy, they name their motor with a code, but the complete system (motor display etc ) with other, that is why is called both g520 and m620.

Another Chinese e-bike builder using the Bafang M620 motor is Dengfu. Their USA office/brand name is Winice. I received the Merak or better known as the E56 model. It is a carbon fiber full suspension fat tire e-bike. Been riding it the last 6 months here in Monterey, CA. The local riding site is Fort Ord with a crazy web of single track trails consisting of most sand, most of it is hard pack but as the summer dryer months and useage extend the sand gets often softer. This is when the fat tires help out. It looks quite nice but the wheel is a bit long and it still weighs 83 lbs. It really isn’t that fun to jump and difficult to do rear wheel kick outs but for the most part is capable enough to keep up with others in group rides whom predominantly ride Specialized Levo mullet e-bikes.

When I think of all that torque, I think of broken spokes. I also think that if you could mate this with a Gates belt drive and an internal hub drive, that would be intriguing. With a 1.5 kw drive, I don't think you'd notice the weight of a Rohloff hub.

When adding a mid drive kit is the loss of the 21 gear to 7 noticeable? Will a 750w motor adequately make up for the loss of gearing? I really like my 6 spoke alloy wheels and currently finding a kit with more than a 250w hub motor is proving difficult. Or am I worrying needlessly?

Ive been researching for a year now to procure optimum parts for a custom build with belt drive that will serve as a main source of land transportation living a yacht life. Your knowledge and video is very good. Nireeka Prime uses the Ultra as well....good looking bike but in no way functional.

Hi, I am enjoying your video`s and have learnt a lot about the dark art of e bikes and batteries. Have you tried the Imortor 3 front drive hub motor? It looks a nice easy system, the battery is a bit small at 7.2a/h, but for me to use on a commuter bike. Any possiblity you could do a video on it?

I just built an 1000W 48V ebike, but regreted the rear mounted battery. I am thinking of downsizing, could you please tell me how to select a frame mounted 48V battery, what current, and what connector should I choose?

I would love to see a serious review of e-trikes, and also adult trike conversions: both in terms of maximum value for cost. I am especially interested in max power and hauling capabilities, as well as maximum range, while still maintaining decent max. speed (at minimum 20+ mph). Thanks!!

Hello, I have a MTBike with the ultra max, which I adapted with a 36T chainring (thanks to Christini co in Philadephia and Karl G), Hope hubs, etc. I live in the french alps and do only mountain biking, the bafang ultra has proven to be great, although the frey frame and package is very heavy compared to my friends carbon eMTB... My question relates to the tuning of the engine, if you cover this. As the engine keeps going on a short while even after the pedaling has stopped. This can be critical in some situations... So if you have any advise, thank you, and sorry is my wording isn't perfect, I am a french national. Sincerely

I have a 2003 specialized epic small frame mountain bike I would like to put a 500w motor on but I don’t think the battery will fit in the triangle part of the frame. What type of motor and battery set up would you suggest? I would buy another bike but I don’t have storage enough for 4 bikes as I’m going to need to add e motors to two bikes.

6:21 - don't lie. Wat Wagon didn't built this bike. It is German Exess HP-E180 eMTB with carbon frame. Wat Wagon is JUST RESELLER and they are liying making impression it's "their" bike. Do not copy these lies...

Love the advise etc... Question: I would like to convert a Acoustic bike to a Electric bike for my 13 year old son. We live in the mountains and he needs the extra assistance to keep up with me : ) I'm not very handy but willing to try the DIY ebike convention kit (especially since it will save me a tone of money). What bikes should I avoid converting and what are the easiest bike to convert. I have a fuji racing road bike and I'm not sure if it can be converted to and electric bike. Thank you invaluable wealth of knowledge!!

Micah, amazing channel! I have a question regarding conversion e-bike's security. How secure is the converted bike, and is there a good way to lock it at public places like train stations?
@gabriels1163
@gabriels1163 4 жыл бұрын
Just remove the battery before you lock it up. Then its no different than any other bike as far as security. Personally, I would never leave a bike at a train station no matter what. Thats just asking for it to be stolen, at least in the states.

Where I live, people throw away bicycles quite often after letting them rot in the weather. I'd like to do one of these conversions but which *FREE* bike would be best in terms of frame design, etc? I have your battery book and am getting close to building my first test pack from recovered cells. Thanks!

Like your videos and I have a question. Have you reviewed the CYC X1 pro gen 2 motor for dyi conversion for ebikes. I recently saw a KZfaq video and would like your opinion for someone seeking an alternative to the bafang BBSHD. Also would like your opinion on their newer controller. It seems to be available for higher voltage and amperage for some who wants to hot rod there bike. Again I appreciate your reviews and would like your input.

Hi there, any idea how to make a DIY 36v 30Ah (or more) battery that could power a Shimano step e8000? I understand that the shimano BMS is quite specific and that the engine would throw an error code if connected to a battery which is not a Shimano battery. Thanks.

Which mid drive do you favor most Befang, Shamano,or Bosch. There are a couple more but these seem to be most popular. I like your video BTW very informative and easy to understand.
Which is better: 48V or 52V battery?
