As an argentinian and a porteño, tango has a high cultural and historic value, and is still very estemeed as a piece of local history and popular in certain places and with certain older age groups, but its modern relevance has been highly overselled to foreign tourists. its really a buenos aires exclusive thing (a lot of what foreigners think about argentina is actually specific to buenos aires and porteño culture) young people dont really go out at night to dance tango.

that's a shame, young people really are dicks! Tango is based, ragaeton is literally slave music.

Hi, Argentinian here! I'll explain a few things: 1) What happens with tango is a clear manifestation of the dichotomy between "porteños" and "provincia", or people from the capital city(CABA) and people from the outside: tango is a genre that originated specifically in the city, in the ports and poor hoods, and its quite different from what happened with music outside of the capital, where different kinds of "folklore", or folk music, originated with different influences and context, for example the northern music and instruments being present, or being the music that the people working in the fields and little towns listened. But because CABA has always had a "unitary" role in Argentina's history, being the place where a lot of the big historical decisions took place and all the important people lived, it also imposed its thing about tango above every other music from the rest of the country, and thats why a lot of outsiders think that tango is big in Argentina, but its not, its more of a CABA thing (although of course there are people in the rest of the country that listen to tango). Folklore is, i would say, the style of music that is more predominant almost anywhere else. 2) Of course meat is a HUGE thing here, but at the same time, fortunately we have "verdulerias", where you can buy vegetables, fruits, and other "healthy" products, and quite cheaper than in the US i might add. There you can buy a kilo (a little over two pounds) of apples for the same price you can buy just one apple in the US. Also, our plant products come from fields that have a lot less industrialization that in the States, so they are also less plastic, in a way. So if you want to eat a salad you can buy the fresh ingredients yourself, even picking each of them with your hand and testing their condition to choose which you are going to buy. Or get a salad already made in some grocery store. We have vegans and vegetarians in Argentina, and more of them everyday that passess. So, anyway, visit my country! its a beautiful place that has many things to offer, despite what some of my fellow countryman, sadly, would say

A great video with a lot of great information. In my 10 years of being in Argentina you can eat anyway that you want if you have accommodations with cooking facility on almost every corner there is a bakery where you can purchase fresh breads and cakes, also there are markets where the sell only fruits and vegetables next they have large supermarkets where you can shop for everything that you will need at one store and for me since I like to cook for myself they all have free delivery even some of the smaller stores have free delivery. So you can shop once a week and never have to go back and forth to the store every day. And finally for me you definitely don't need a car in Buenos Aires, the public transportation system is clean, safe and very efficient for me Argentina check off all the boxes 📦 for me. In my observation the Tango is more popular with older people and not younger people but Argentinian loves all types of music, they love Bob Marley, the Rolling Stones there are many small jass clubs and James Brown is very popular also Buenos Aires is truly an international city, no doubt 💙 👏 ❤️.

The same thing happens with Tango as with Jazz, it was very popular at the time but now it is only for a small group of people. I think that nobody who travels to NY would expect to hear Jazz everywhere, but if you know how to get to the right places, you will see that it is as alive as when Louis Armstrong played, the same thing happens here with Tango. There are some good vegetarian restaurants in Buenos Aires, I recommend you try Buenos Aires Verde that is in Gorriti 5657, in Palermo one of my favorite restaurants although I am not a vegetarian. A warning with electricity, apart from having a different plug we have a different voltage. In the USA it is 110v and in Argentina it is 220v, if you plug in a transformer to charge a notebook or a cell phone you will have no problem but if you plug in a hair dryer it will explode when you turn it on.

You nailed it with the tango. It's a very iconical symbol of the Buenos Aires music but nowadays it's more focused on tourism. As for the provinces, I'd bet little to none listen to tango, in the provinces there's a lot of Chamame, Malambo, Gato, Zamba, Chacarera, etc. Thypical regional argentinian music called "Folclore" or "Musica folclorica" manly focused on the history and customs of the country back in the days

As you're talking about BA exclusively, what you said about tango is true. If you go anywhere else Folclore takes the place of tango, and at some places party music includes local generes like Cuarteto at Córdoba. You visited Iguazú Waterfalls and Mendoza, great places indeeed, but you're missing a lot if you dont visit other great places like Perito moreno glaciar at Calafate, or Bariloche and other sorrounding cities like Villa La Angostura or San Martín de los Andes. Then you can go Northwest to Salta for example. Then you'll have to know "gran buenos aires" or GBA. It's very different in many ways to what you saw here.

With those outlet adapters make sure that you don’t need to convert the power source from 240 to 110v etc. Because the power adapter for your phone or electrical device unusually converts the power already. You just use the use the universal adapter as a 🔌 plug for the outlet.

About the music. Tango is classic. Is like Sinatra, Armstrong, Fitzgerald for americans. It was huge, sometimes its played, but nowadays Americans listen to hip-hop, etc. Older people still listen cause its their generation music but they are fading away. So all the tango display throughout the city is because it's a cultural root of that neighbourhood or/and for tourists. Also, is not just bsas, it was huge everywhere (specially in the center of the country, sta fe, entre rios, bsas, etc) but yes, the northern part of the country is more about folk and they actually hear it still way more than porteños listen to tango.

Good video amigo! I'm from Argentina and wanna say something. In Argentina it's normal to be called "gordo", "flaco", "negro", and more, we are used to it. I don't know exactly why we do that, but its not meant to be offensive at all. For example the word "negro" is not an ugly word or an offensive word in Argentina. My best friend is "el negro Hugo" and that is… his nickname!. It is important to mark this fact because some afroamericans from USA may don't know this and therefore they could be confused about racism actitudes or something like that and it is not the case. Keep up with these amazing videos and... Cheers!

Tango is something very specific to certain parts of Buenos Aires and it culture, and also you have it cousin the milonga, both we share with Uruguay. Tango outside of tourist circles is something for more up scale people or intellectuals, people the drink expensive wine jajajaja, sort of like Jazz in the US. You nailed it with rock music for people above 30 and in the interior each area has it own type of folkloric music they are Al ver different. There is also a lot of local pop music across the board.

I used to know many Argentines due to my wine connections, and they all personally did not like it, they said it made them feel "bluesy" or sad. It reminded them of the dirty war. The military had it banned, and when democracy was restored, brand new radio stations for tango sprang up in some cities. Definitely had a lot of symbolic meaning, I guess in a way that blues does.

Re: Tango -- I've been thinking of coming to Buenos Aires for a while. I've been to CDMX, Lima, Bogota, and just recently Madrid. Your comments on Tango actually make me think maybe its like Flamenco in Spain. It's more about the performance? We saw a flamenco show in Madrid and outside of that, music was mostly reggaeton, salsa, bachata etc.

Hello. I watched your videos and I liked them. I would like to clarify something for you: with respect to music, to say that tango is very popular in Argentina is a very big generalization. It's something more like a type of historical music or dance, but it's not really popular... sadly, fewer and fewer people listen to it and it's more popular only in Buenos Aires, it's the music by which the world recognizes us but it's not What we dance or listen to the most... also with respect to salsa I must say that it is not typical of our culture, salsa is more from Central America
@MademoiselleRed1390

Tango is part of our tradition at this point but no, it was popular during my grandparents era but from boomers and onwards it's not really what you dance to during the weekends. Popular dance genres are cumbia, reggeaton, cuarteto mostly in Cordoba and cachenge. Then of course, rock is also very popular in terms of what is listented like concerts and the like. And finally the more into de provinces you go the more Folklore you may hear but in terms of dancing, again, it's traditional rather than popular.

Thanks for your videos, they are very realistic and accurate. I was surprised to notice that Buenos Aires does not appear to be a very racially mixed/diverse city. Very few Asians, Blacks or Native Americans are seen walking down the sidewalks in your videos from Buenos Aires. There also appear to be a lot more homeless people sleeping, sitting, lounging on the sidewalks than I have seen in your videos from other cities in Latin America. To be frank, it looks a bit like San Francisco, California, which has a huge homeless problem. (I live in the San Francisco Bay Area)

Not really, most of them are in the main avenues for getting free food from the restaurants, none city(of the continent) matches SF & LA on homeless issues.. Chinese community holds the mini-market activity, Bolivians the groceries(vegs nd fruits), Paraguayans are strong in construction, peruvians venezuelans nd brazilians are all over the place. There is an important community of argo-jews. Minorities of argo-koreans/japaneses, domis, urus... the ethnogenesia of Argentina is from mass waves of immagration in the last decades of SXIX until post WW2 from Europe, Christian levantines, armenians, etc + colonial stock. From the '70s the immgs waves are from SAmerica.
