Brazil is an incredibly diverse place. In Salvador de Bahia African culture dominates, in Sao Paolo its Italian and Japanese while southern cities like Blumenau are more German than Germany itself.

This video perfectly captures the essence of Rio de Janeiro! The city's unique blend of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and warm-hearted people always leaves a lasting impression. As a tour guide who's had the privilege of connecting with renowned travel KZfaqrs like Czech in effect and Ace Live during their time here, it's wonderful to see others getting inspired to explore this incredible destination.

About the coffee with sugar that you talked about, it’s not common for the places to put sugar inside your coffee without telling the customer first. The most common is for the sugar being there in the table and the customer putting it or not.

Yeah I noticed that. Everywhere else had salt & pepper on the table, but in Rio it's sugar😅

This is the type of thing that European travellers are really used to. Plugs can vary from country to country and we travel a lot as everything is compact and close. So we all have our collection of 'travel adapters'. You can buy them everywhere.

You've got a lot of points right. Rio is the most touristic city in South America. I've spent several Brazilian winters here when accommodations are half or a third of the peak season prices and just a bit less madness. The outlets are not just the problem, it's the electrical wiring in the old buildings. I've had several ac adapters burned. Hope you're enjoying your stay!

I LOVE your observations about what Brazilians look like. I think sometimes North Americans think Latin Americans all look similar. Maybe what they think of as 'Latinos' is based on the Spanish speaking peoples Americans have most contact with like Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans etc. They maybe don't know for example that there are places in Latin America where there are many people of just indigenous descent like Bolivia. There are areas where there are many people of African descent like parts of Colombia and Cuba. There are places where people are almost all of European descent like Argentina and Uruguay. Peru had a Japanese Peruvian president called Fujimori. Chile's first president was called Bernardo O'Higgens who had Irish blood. And you get them ALL in Brazil. In the north you get a lot of black Brazilians and in the south there are a lot of blue eyed, fair haired people of German descent (like Gisele Bündchen!). And the biggest concentration of people of Japanese descent outside of Japan is in São Paulo, Brazil. So nobody can ever look at you and say 'you don't look Brazilian!' I love that you noticed and I've never heard a travel KZfaqr mention it before. Worth a sub. PS I heard that people wanting fake passports love Brazilian passports for this reason! No matter what they look like they can pass as Brazilian. 🤣🇧🇷

Great safety tips. I'll be traveling there alone and I'm going to take a small dry bag with me when I'm in the water, tethered to my wrist. I'll look completely ridiculous but even leaving it with a friendly old lady is not something I'd consider.

One more thing that everyone who's planning on going to Rio de Janeiro needs to know is there is no rail service of any type to Rio's airports. Rio de Janeiro does have a metro system that serves many areas well. However, it has not been directly connected to the airports. Fortunately, travelers can take advantage of the frequent bus service that serves the airports. The buses can be taken for just the equivalent of a few US dollars to metro stops about a dozen kilometers away from the airport. Travelers need to be certain they get on the right bus to ensure they don't end up in a part of town they really don't want to be in. Once you reach a metro station, you can board a train to Ipanema, Copacabana, or most of the other major tourist destinations quite easily. In total, it should be possible for most travelers to get from the airport to the hotel for less than the equivalent of 15 USD. Many can probably do it for less than $10. Maybe if you're reading this many years after I'm writing this, Rio de Janeiro might have built a new metro line to at least one of its airports. The main international airport is on an island right across from the main university in Rio de Janeiro as well. A metro line that connects these two major trip generators to the rest of the metro system makes a lot of sense, but as of right now, there are no plans to actually do it. Fortunately, the bus connections to the airport are quite good if perhaps a little confusing for first-time visitors. Still, it's worth figuring it out because taxi scams and dishonest Uber drives are quite common in Brazil. If you are going somewhere where you absolutely must take a taxi, please make absolutely certain you are riding with a legitimate service. Many hotel front desk agents will help arrange tours and transportation for you and warn you about scams and dishonest companies.
