From someone who has bought too many synths to mention over the years, of all different types, this is great advice to beginners! You're doing a great job... I really enjoyed your videos on the Prologue, I'm sat on the fence as I have a Minilogue but wonder if the extra voices in unison would be worth the upgrade, as I produce trance/progressive.

Well said! Thanks for the kind words. Hah - you already know I'm biased on the Prologue but I would totally upgrade from the Mini to the Pro unless you need the sequencer and portability. It really still is the best sounding synth in it's price bracket in my opinion until you get up to the real expensive stuff like the Sequential/Moog etc.

@Luke Porter just saw this comment thank you so much Luke! Appreciate the kind words. If you are new to synthesis, check out the sound design section of the new vid I uploaded today on Nymphes, I teach 2 really basic sounds every synthesist should know!

Good information. Wouldn’t be a bad idea to consider groove boxes and hardware DAWs/workstations.
@MilesAwayOfficial

thanks! yea Grooveboxes are great but being honest they are not my area of expertise , as I use all my synths with Logic! I've got a Deluge and would like to try an Elektron box but there are other channels who are much more focused on hardware grooveboxes/workstations than me - I'm more specialized in synth and music production :)

Nice walkthrough! I personally think the Sequential Take 5 is a ridiculously great synth that is perfect for someone newer to synthesis and willing to spend a bit more. The feature set is kind of unreal for the price: Sequential VCOs, the Prophet 5 Rev4 filter, two effects channels (one is dedicated reverb), the Sequential vintage knob, a great mod matrix (for growing into perhaps), two LFOs, aftertouch, a great keyboard... It's kind of nuts how good it is. I had a Rev2 and sold it to get the Take 5. I do miss the extra voices and better build quality, but I've already made a ton more patches than I had when I owned the Rev2. Your videos on the Summit make me think I will be getting that for my next big synth purchase to compliment the Take 5...

That's a great shout Ben! I love the Sequential stuff, I've just never had the chance to try a Take 5. Will keep an eye out to see if I can get my hands on one eventually to do a video, it sounds amazing!

Hey there, I just found out about your channel and loved this video! Great summary of all the things you need to think about 👍🏻 Would you say it’s a good idea for a beginner in music production to buy a hardware synth? I kind of want to get myself an Arturia MicroFreak, because turning knobs to create sounds seems really fun and creative. On the other hand I’m not super good at making music (yet, hopefully anyways 😂). Plus I’m sure all the sounds could be made in FL Studio without any extra cost, which I own already. Got any recommendations?

Thanks Mike and welcome to my channel! Tons of other beginner synth videos here :) if budget is not an option, I'd say get a hardware synth like a Monologue, Microfreak or Minilogue because the hands on workflow is often very inspiring and easy to learn for people compared to VSTs. It's a real instrument! But if not, you can totally start with just a DAW like FL and a cheap midi controller. That's how i started!

@@MilesAwayOfficial Thank you for your reply! I mean, budget synths like the Pocket Operators seem like fun but also like I would use them for only a little while and then personally disregard them. But if I had a bigger Synth I would probably try to get as much as possible out of it, I think. Or maybe something like the Volca Keys would be better for me? I have definitely been spending too much time reading about hardware synthesis in the last couple of days haha I have not tried out any single hardware synth though. Maybe I should give my local music shop a visit
@MilesAwayOfficial
@MilesAwayOfficial Жыл бұрын
@@Bananenbr_t I’d skip the pocket operators and go for volcas if you are looking for budget gear. Still the Logue range from Korg is the absolute best for cheap synths though, you can get a used Minilogue or Monologue for a good price

I think (opinion time :p) that a first hardware synth should be 1:polyphonic 2:analogue 3:mostly knob per function. 4:allow presets and that’s that. Rolling digital can be had with a laptop and a nice controller perhaps not as inspiring as the hardware equivalents but infinitely more timbres and options. Just about every digital synth I know has menus and diving.. to me the inspiration is knob per function. This alone forces me into the analog camp. Well that and being able to do what a $4000 Waldorf iridium can inside a laptop.

Great opinion! I'm pretty similar with 2 small preference differences: i personally don't care at all about presets since I don't bring my full synths when I play live and when I'm in the studio i love dialling in sounds from scratch, but I get the appeal easily! Secondly, while I prefer analog (OB6 is still my all time fave synth), I do think that digital hardware has a great place like the Cobalt, as a really inspiring hands on tool to design sounds with. Using mouse and keyboard isn't that fun! Thanks for watching, and stay tuned for new vids every friday :)
