Hello friends! Welcome to my channel One Blessed Mess for this video all about the top 6 things we DON'T do in our homeschool! I hope this goes without saying, but that doesn't mean these things are BAD things! This is purely for fun and to show how vastly unique each homeschool is, and what does and doesn't work is specific to each family! :)
If you are new here, hi and welcome! I'm Christie, and I'm a 4th year homeschooling mom to 5 kids (ages 12, 11, 8, 4, and 2!) My husband and I pulled our kids out of public school, moved to our house in the country, and haven't looked back! I love sharing my (authentic + honest) journey with you all, and hope you will join me as we navigate our footing in the world of homeschooling!

Good morning, Mamas! Praying you're all having a blessed Monday, and I hope you enjoyed today's video! Are there any of these points that you also don't do in your homeschool? And on the flip side, are there some things here that you do? I'd love to hear from you! 💕

My children are motivated by grades, but we also stick with a topic until it’s mastered as well. For us, it’s the best of both worlds, because they are seeing their success by getting great marks and I am satisfied that they can move on to new topics.

You were speaking from my heart. We don’t do any of these 6 without judging other people about it or saying we will never do it differently. I wish we lived closer and could just meet for a play date and mom chat 😀 Love your honesty and humble attitude ❤

I love mixing curriculums! This is our 3rd year and honestly I find so much joy searching for those fun curriculums! It also takes a lot of time and gets super overwhelming but who doesn't like shopping?!? One thing I do not do is I refuse to buy any black and white workbooks. I can't. They have to be in color to make it fun and interesting!!

I can relate to your answer on co-ops! They've always overwhelmed me a bit. 😅 We did join one this past year, but thankfully found one we can minimally join - we attend once a month field trips & a once a month day at our local state park with the naturalist & so far it's been an ideal balance to our homeschool.

Thank you for sharing. There are so many of the things that you mentioned that we don't do (of course, there are some that we do include in our homeschool). That is one of the things I love about homeschool - tailoring our homeschool for our kids.

Thank you for sharing, really enjoyed it Always neat to see what other homeschoolers do or don’t do. I have to admit the 6 things you listed you don’t do, we don’t do either. Have great day! Take care, Kim

I do grades for state reporting, but I don't usually show it to my son because when he used to see the score I found he stressed about "good grades" more than just learning the info. We don't do co-ops or pajamas either!! I'd love to add in a "fun day", we don't currently have that in our homeschool but that sounds awesome! 😄 I do live in a more restrictive state for homeschooling, do wish it was more relaxed but I'm still glad for the freedoms we have in homeschool to tailor it to our kids' needs and what works best! Great video, I'm glad to see you posting again!

I am fairly new to homeschooling myself. I was homeschooled as a kid, but it seems to have changed so much since then! My daughter is in 2nd grade and we do heavy bookwork only because she gets bored easily when things are so open and easy. I might switch up my curriculum, so it’s interesting to hear that you pick from all sorts for each individual child! My state it pretty restrictive so I have to report grades and administer a state recognized test end of year, but doesn’t mean we can’t do side projects when she’s more interested in a specific topic. I am with you on co-ops, way too much to commit to. I did end up starting my own group, not a co-op, with parents in my area and it has been such a blessing to have moms share the load with a couple times a month. I will most definitely continue to follow you!

We did a co op in Maryland and I met my most BEST Friends there. With that being said it was A LOT. I was required to teach but I loved the community. However we just moved to NC and I am not ready to jump back in one but my kids are so sad without it. Idk how to tell them it’s too much. Especially with baby number 4. I do the same no grades and must get dressed!!! I even do hair and makeup. Also do all different companies. Great idea about fun Friday!

This all sounds great! This is what I love about homeschooling. There is so much freedom and as moms we are directly involved.. always with our little ones best interest at heart. Identify with everything except we do school in our pajamas! 🤭💕...only because our mornings are so busy and it would be an extra step to take. Loved listening! Thank you for sharing! 😉

My kids get ready for the day too and I feel better myself when I get ready for the day. I also love it because if we decide we want to get up and go to the library, park, lunch etc…we don’t have to wait for anyone to get ready. We just get up and go.

We use grades around here very loosely.. it’s easier for the kids when they are questioned by others about what grade they are in but that’s as far as it goes. We use whatever level they are at for each child. We also live way too far out for a coop as well. 😊 great video! Love your channel!

We don’t do most of these things either! We tried doing a co-op class a couple years ago, and it was just overwhelming trying to fit it into our schedule, so we have fun time with our homeschool friend and opt out of the co-op.

I don’t label us as using, or having a homeschool method. We just use what works and roll with it. We’re flexible week to week with how we do things. There is structure and routine, but because life is unpredictable we adjust as needed with what all we do. Everything we use is just a resource and is treated as such. Thanks for sharing!

For our grading we just have to mark: meeting grade level, approaching grade, needs support etc. as long as our kids are progressing and grasping the topics it’s all good for us 😀

I think that staying open and flexible to change in our homeschool is so important, and you seem to nail that wisdom on the head. We have been homeschooling for 11 years, and I change things all the time. Things need to change as our children grow, as our family situations might require, etc. I started out adamant about using certain curriculum, then slowly progressed to where we use almost no curriculum at all. (Mind you, some of that is due to budget constraints. But even if I was able, I find that I like to use curricula as resources, more than front to back for the most part). Anyways, I think your children are probably getting an excellent education, because you care for them, and you tailor their school to their individual needs. And checking boxes at least to some degree is important in my opinion, at least for us as well. If we have no structure, then I can easily let a lot of important skills go unchecked, and easily get neglected. Thank you for sharing this video. It's always nice to see what other mammas do in their school. God bless sweet sister 💜

I totally hear you on the co-ops. We joined cc this year (again after a 3 yr glorious break) and it’s been great for my middle schooler, but it’s just a nuisance for the elementary age kids because, like you said, it disrupts our school week flow. I don’t think we will do it again next year and will maybe try to find a park group or something more flexible and not every week. I definitely like cc for my oldest though. PS just finished the video and I don’t do any of those 6 things either 😀

We don't have to report anything, or keep any records so we don't keep records like attendance or do grades. Arkansas is a state where you turn letter of intent to homeschool in & you have 100% freedom to teach as you please. We also do not do co-ops! Some days we school in pjs but I do like to get dressed and ready myself as if motivates me and makes for a better day ahead! We only school Monday-Thursday, with Friday being our Fun Friday or free day as well! We utilize educational screen time like Khan Academy kids or educational games in our homeschool!

We are very eclectic homeschoolers! I don’t stick to one curriculum or method either. I like to keep my kids on their toes 😂 We do have to keep grades as we have to report them but it’s not something we really discuss. If there is something they don’t understand we go back and revisit the lesson or concept.

I have to give grades in our state but if I’m grading a quiz or test and see it’s not going great, I stop and we go over it together and they have a chance to redo that section. Otherwise, I don’t grade other things.

We don’t do grades (or tests 😬) either! We also don’t do coops because of the requirements (me volunteering my time is not something I want to do or cleaning the church bathroom). My girls do take a homeschool art and choir class but all I do is drop them off and head to Hobby Lobby and Walmart ALONE 😂 I wish my girls would get dressed every morning but I struggle to “practice what I preach too”. I may add this goal to my list, it would probably help my mental health too.

Co-Ops can be life giving for mamas IF they're a good fit for the whole family. We've been involved in our co-op for 4 years and they have classes for babies all the way to 12th grade. It's very accommodating and we all look forward to that day each week! I wish everyone could have the co-op experience that we've had. It is parent-led (as most are) so we do have to volunteer our time to help make sure it functions but it's worth it for the breathing room it gives us in our week.
