In my opinion RS started going down hill when Andrew stepped down as CEO. It got even worse when he left the Board of directors. The only employee jagex has that I think should run the company is the only one capable of recovering RS's former glory is Mod Ash. He's the only Jmod that has always been for the community. Truly loves the game.

I guess it just makes me wonder: why *did* Jagex hate listening to their playerbase so much? Jagex had every opportunity leading up to eoc to foster goodwill with it's playerbase, and blew it nearly every time. Why would you *not* want to listen to your paying customers' feedback?

I remember when eoc was introduced, I gave it a chance and opted to use the legacy mode that pretty much reverted it back to some degree, but ultimately quit cause with the new bosses you had to use the abilities and it just made it unfun

You omitted a big part of 117's riot. Like how that Reddit post was most trending in r/all for few days, how it has nearly 80k upvotes, which is absolutely insane, or how many people cancelled their memberships, even rs3 playerbase joined

Still pains me to this day how jagex thought changing the game to eoc/rs3 would improve it. Just look at osrs now with its healthy player base and great community decided upon updates vs eoc/rs3 with its dead player base.

Hmm..when did riots on rs2 switch to world 66 or were the swift-switch riots on w27 by chance? Historically it was the "Running Law Runes" world, and riots would take place there for the symbolism. I attended a few riots on 66, and now ironically the world is "EoC Only", almost seems like a middle finger from Jagex as the players rioted against EoC.

Squeal of Fortune ruined it for me. They added good items on there money and even rares and you could buy hundreds of dollars worth of spins.

trade limit and wilderness removal killed a large chunk of the playerbase. peak users never even got close to that before the change. EOC nearly killed the game for good.

20:28 Well it was pointless back in the 2000s and early 2010s because jagex didn't listen to players back then. because the entire concept of players being able to interact with the devs was still new and jagex still had a pre internet mindset despite only making online games from day one. but after they almost went bankrupt in 2013 they had to release osrs. and when enough players riot now they will probably get what they want.

I played since classic. I would take breaks, but always return. There was a lot of stuff I didn't like, such as the removal of free trade and the addition of pay to win MTX, but EoC is what killed it for me. Combat was actually my least favorite part of the game, but at least it was simple to understand. For the most part PVE Melee was as simple as equipping the best strength boosting equipment you could afford and a whip. Magic and ranged weren't much more complicated. There were easy to use calculators to see how an equipment load out would work for you before investing in it. Best of all, it could be done while watching TV. Then EoC drops, all of the sudden equipment doesn't do what it used to, and there are an overwhelming amount of icons that would need to be managed and rotated if you even put in the effort to learn what all of these things meant. While kind of the standard in other MMOs, I didn't like other MMOs. I liked Runescape, where playing without engaging in combat at all was a valid playstyle since your skills weren't barred by arbitrary level gates, and the combat itself was as simple as clicking on the monster and eating or retreating if in danger. There were bosses that required complex strategies like moving away from attacks and prayer switching in reaction to their attack style, but that made those fights more special. I left when EoC launched, only briefly revisiting a couple of times in the past few years. I kind of got the hang of RS3 combat, there was a ton of new content, and the game looked great. I didn't even mind dropping real money on a skin that made me into a bird person, since it didn't convey any ingame advantage or invalidate any existing fashionscape items. Then I realized just how broken the game had become. I quickly went from playing since classic and not having a single 99, to having 3, and I hate grinding. The game pushed lootboxes hard, which let players buy their way out of playing the game even with the ridiculously high new XP rates, and featured multiple vanity sets that were split into individual pieces, each of which was a rare drop from the lootbox system. And the game loved to remind you about Treasure Hunter frequently just in case you wanted to try to play without engaging in that aspect. The new tier system meant that everything I knew about gear was wrong, with the once almighty whip being a mid level stepping stone, basically what something like a mithril scimitar was in the old days. And just in case the XP wasn't easy enough to earn or buy, bonus XP events seemed to be common. It was rare to examine a player that didn't already have every skill maxed. So I looked into OSRS, and that's a different can of worms. While it may be based on an older version of the game, the way people play is different. People learned how to squeeze the most out of every in-game tick to the point that new high level content requires you to master this system that we didn't even know about back then. There's an obsession with efficiency, and the idea that you need to max your account before you can play recreationally probably started as a joke but so many take it seriously. I didn't get a single 99 between when I started in classic and quit with EoC. I was a casual social player that didn't like doing one thing for too long. There just aren't enough like-minded people on OSRS for me to actually recapture the feeling of when I played back then. The game went from Andrew thinking no one would be mad enough to max a single skill to the prevailing attitude being that unless you are some kind of PKing pure you need to max every skill. I didn't have it in me back then, and now that I have a job and other responsibilities that idea is completely off the table. And while RS3 is easier for someone in my position, if you're not at the Buthorpe bank or GE the game feels abandoned, killing the social aspect I loved.

Removal of free trade/pvp and the evolution of combat killed RuneScape.. this coming from someone that played since 01 I loved RuneScape but they took everything that made the game fun and simplistic away. Now RuneScape is split into different versions old school, RS3 etc and that did nothing but split the community and made things worse. Rip 🪦 RuneScape
