Thank you for your information. I’ve been researching properties in Florida to buy to raise our own food and animals. I’ve considered kunekune pigs since we do eat pork through out the year. It’s nice to know and see an example that rotating your pigs and using natural dewormer helps keep them healthy and happy. I’ve seen a video of company that has permanent fancied pastures (six in total if I remember correctly) and they rotate their goats pigs and chickens (in that order) on them. It’s something I consider doing once we buy our property. Just have to figure out a setup/plan for an easy way to rotate them on permanent pastures, probably have their main house an run in center and each side would have an option of opening a gate to a pasture.

That a good idea. We have a small barn that we use like that it has four stalls and we rotate them around the barn

Great video! Thanks for sharing your tip on natural deworming. I read something similar in a Permaculture book by Sepp Holzer, he lets his livestock free graze and he noticed they would eat poisonous plants sometimes, likely when they had worms or something similar. Kune Kune seem like a great breed, thanks for sharing your tips and experience with them!

@@KCFarms ouch! Them HOAs can be a total downer! Thankfully we don’t live in one of those, but it’s a zoning issue here, according to my county office you have to have 10 acres at least and be zoned agricultural to have any “farm” animals 🤷‍♀️ I’ve snuck in chickens, turkeys and ducks so far haha 😆 I’m in the middle of farm country so I don’t see the bit deal and nobody else seems to either

Love your barn. Is there a plan for it, or just self made? The 4 doors seems like a great idea for rotation purposes. Love to see what plan you used. Thanks! I thought for a second you would be really close KC, but appreciate the videos and thinking about doing this as well!

There really wasn’t a plan we just drew it up On a napkin and showed our builder. I believe it’s 16x16 and then we just made 4 stalls with doors on the inside. Yeah the KC is just a nickname we used to call my dad we are in Tennessee

I use pallets for doors. I have a 6 week old piglet that gave me a good scare. He ran full speed into the pallet door and almost got thru but got stuck halfway thru. Hopefully he learned a good lesson. In the meantime, I need to fatten him up so he can't get thru the slats.

We mix 2-3 heaping tablespoons of food grade DE, 1 tablespoon of molasses, 1 teaspoon grapefruit extract, 1 heaping teaspoon of ground tobacco. We mix it with moistened pellets 3 days in row every 3-4 months. If the weather has been really wet we mix 1 teaspoon of wormwood. We have links in the description to some of the products we use.

If that structure didn’t work for farrowing, then what did you decide to go with?
@KCFarms
@KCFarms 2 жыл бұрын
We used a larger barn. We have used that structure as well but have added crush rails so that the piglets can get away and have an area the momma can’t get to
@davidnorwood5685
@davidnorwood5685 2 жыл бұрын
@@KCFarms as I understand, pig crush rails are different from dog crush rails. Pig crush rails are essentially a fence that blocks the momma pig from getting to a certain area of the farrowing pen. The crush rail area often has a heat lamp to attract the piglets and keep them warm. Does this sound correct?

@@KCFarms no worries. Just thought I’d ask. The woman that I’m buying the pigs from feeds alfalfa pellets as 90% of the diet. She supplements with cow milk and garden vegetables. The pellets only have 1% fat. Her pigs look really good. They are not overly fat like many can get, neither are they thin. We are in Southern California, so we don’t have pastures, but alfalfa pellets are cheap and convenient. Anyways, I appreciate the reply. Cheers!
