Aside what the thumbnail implies, this isn't secrets straight from the mouth of a pig....
We share some of the things we learnt while keeping kune kune pigs in our garden, including some that we hadn't seen in any videos or read in any book!
We are not vets and these are not recommendations, this is just what we chose to use, please be sure to do your own research before using anything on animals.
The product we used for the chickens and the pigs were;
General for putting on the chickens: amzn.to/3heAZma
For dusting chickens with with a heavy lice load (Not exact product, we couldn't find it as it was brought from a pet store): amzn.to/3fAhRyy
Added to feed for pigs and chickens: amzn.to/3Tb62MX

I was wondering what was the down side of allowing the chickens to lay eggs in the pig house? Besides the problem that you solved by beating the pigs to the eggs. I guess the chickens mess up the clean pig house.
@agreatalternative
@agreatalternative 9 ай бұрын
That’s exactly right Rose, overall it would mean more cleaning out as the chickens may make things messy. They weren’t sleeping in there though so in our case it didn’t get too bad as they were not in there for long periods at a time.

My previous neighbor sold his property and was going to move into the city, Getting a little too old to be out in the praries so they offered to give me their Kunekune pigs, both of them are 2 years old, Max and dottie, both 430 pounds but they are American Kunekune's so they get bigger. At first i was worried cause i had No idea what i was getting into, I have 2 Belgian draft horses but they are mainly show horses because i Love how strong they are (they have also helped me pull a tractor out of a tight spot more times than i have fingers.) But once they got settled in, I Built them a stall next to the horses, they were super curious. I Have a Machine shop attached to the barn where i keep the animals so the barn is heated plus i have 5 dogs, 2 Russian caucasian shepherds and 3 Tibetan mastiffs so not small dogs by any means as none of them are under 200 pounds. Didn't think much of them at first but Max and Dottie they dont take any crap, Just before our first snow fall here recently they beat the crap out of an Adult black bear thinking he could get an easy meal, He regretted his choice very quickly. Even wolves, Max especially Does not like anything on his turf and What i love is they are best friends with all of the dogs so if they let out a squeel once the dogs come running and they know it and arent afraid to call for back up if they get in trouble while outside. Eventually i just took 3 of the stalls out of the barn cause the pigs and horses get along so well, even to the point where i will get in the shop and the dogs, pigs and horses will all be laying together. Problem is. Smart horses + Smart pigs = I get bamboozled a lot because the horses will tap on the walls with their front hooves while looking through the window if im in the shop, then if i so much as peek through that window and a pig sees me, i get verbally harassed until everyone gets a treat. 😒... Dottie has a Lysine problem so a treat i gotta give her is actually Chocolate Milk. Well because she gets some Max has taken a liking to it also so thats 2 galons of chocolate milk per month. They take some getting use to, but i Definitely love having them around. My food waste with the pigs + my fish? 0.0% I dont have a commercial farm by any means, I only have 7 acres and my primary income is from my machine shop so my animals are friends. Plus its pretty funny watching a pig scratch its butt on the corner of a door way then see a horse do the same thing because they learn't it from the damn pig!

Thank you for your story, made us both laugh a few times 😁 Glad you’re enjoying having the kune kune’s around, we certainly enjoyed them being part of the family while they were with us! Especially like you said watching them use a post to scratch on, wiggling their butt like a professionally dancer is something to behold 😂

@@agreatalternative Thank you. Your authenticity and genuineness is beautiful and I would change nothing. The world needs more of your style. I only want one to start and only as a pet. I have done a good amount of research for a few years and have spoke to some breeders of lines that are supposedly smaller in size, but realize there are no guarantees.

They are a great first pig, being a smaller breed with short snouts they don’t cause ‘as much’ havoc. That said unlike some others we personally wouldn’t treat them like dogs because I can’t see them being too well house trained 😂 Thank you again for your kind words, made my day 😊

@@agreatalternative 😂 We’re on the east coast, Nova Scotia to be exact. Just started homesteading 2years ago!! We have 11 rabbits, 30 chickens, 5 pregnant sheep and 2 Berkshire/red wattle pigs. We’re growing massive gardens with the goal to not have to go to the grocery ever again. Our government hates that so we’re trying even harder!

Thanks Nate, we can’t wait to get some more again! We definitely plan to but can’t until we’re living on the land, which won’t happen until we get all the permissions we need. Anyone can do it, it just depends what you’re willing to sacrifice to get there. For us that was living off of very little money in a caravan for a few years!

Ours are big babies, we are aware they'll get bigger, but want them happy and friendly as they grow. My only problem with them is they like chasing the buggy with the dogs, and we don't want them out of the yard where we keep them.

I'm trying to figure out the winter situation and keeping them warm and dry. I like your dog house for them, but we have an open oval enclosure that is useful for summers, but I think not so much for winters. Maybe I could put a temp dog house inside for them...
@agreatalternative

I wouldn’t worry to much, the main thing that gets most animals is the damp and the wind so as long as they can shelter from those two in a simple outdoor structure they should be fine. Most animals deal with the cold better than they do with the heat. Good luck!!

good info. we have started our little farm this year with Nigerian dwarf goats which we plan to breed & milk. chickens & 5 days ago we got our first 2 kunekune piglets. they both have different parents so we plan to breed them. we are thinking of getting another set so we have more options of breeding. how many do you have & how big of an area do you have them in?? we have our piglets with our buck goat right now. will be putting in another pen for pigs
@agreatalternative

We started with three but quickly went to two as it was the original plan and one was too intelligent for his own good. We had all boys and they went to freezer camp, again, always the plan as it was our first time having pigs. I don’t have measurements and I can’t say how good I am at estimating but their space was about 100’x25’ (don’t hold me to that!) This was fine for the warmer months as ours didn’t root (some do, be warned) but really for the winter months they needed a sacrifice pen as the whole area got turned to mud over the winter. We intend on rotating when we get pigs again now that we have the space, then over winter assess whether that is enough or to set up a sacrifice pen. Hope that’s helpful! -A

@agreatalternative

Our pigs and chickens got on fine but as I think we mentioned, the chickens going in the pig house was the only issue because they would mess in it and start laying in there. I have read though some people have had pigs eat their chickens 🤷‍♀️

Farm animals are not pets and especially "indoor" pets. Can we and should we have a great relationship with them? Yes, but it must be within reason and mostly for safety. In the end, it must "always" be understood that they are FOOD and will be butcherd as such.
