How I got over my fear: waited until 3 days before my first triathlon to do an open water swim. Read the triathlon lake was very murky. Wanted to practice, so went to the lake to practice. Remembered I knew how to swim, convinced a friend who is a Lifeguard to kayak alongside me with a lifejacket at the ready incase I forgot how to swim. Jumped in and started swimming, realized I couldn't see my hands, realized there were no lane markers, and the other shore was half a mile away, realized it was very cold, felt very small, felt very scared, screamed a few swear words, kept swimming. Swam 1.5 miles.

I always used to love swimming in the sea when i was young. I would swim out to where the small boats were anchored and chase fish etc. Then I made the mistake of swimming out quite far with goggles on and looked down. Was like 15 body lengths to the deep dark bottom and darkness stretched into the distance. It made me completely aware how small i was. Never liked open water since.

I used to do the same all the time in black waters. But actually it was being in shallower waters when I went to the floor and looked out not down and saw the vast distance ahead of me that freaked me out. I still have the image vividly in my mind of how dark it was in the distance.

I would challenge your opening statements saying that the fear of open water swimming isn't rational. Its very rational given that in most cases, if you are more than 200 metres away from another person whilst out in the water you are potentially in a fatal situation if something goes wrong.

"potentially" and "if something goes wrong" apply better to driving a car than to a positively buoyant animal in water. It's the lack of consistency that makes it irrational. You take much greater risks without even noticing them every day.

I just completed my first triathlon. The swim was in a calm, small, shallow lake with staggered start. Couldn't have been any easier, right? Well, I pretty much panicked and had to breaststroke much of it. Miserable experience. I will vow to overcome my fears and practice ows before my next try. Good to know I'm not alone though. I trained for an open water swim this year with the purpose of overcoming this fear. The first time I got in I had a panic attack and couldn't get over it, this was with an experienced swimmer too. Next few times including the race were completely fine. Then I decided to try it solo in a different lake and had another panic attack. So I made myself swim solo again a few days later in fairly choppy waters. It was tough going and required a pep talk half way across but I managed it. Its a strange old thing 'fear'. And it will probably take serious consistency to fully overcome it. The strange thing is the longer you swim the more relaxed you become. It's always better to go out with people and make sure you have a float. And most of all be patient with yourself.

Thank you very much for these nice tips. I will try it during next spring. I am afraid of swimming in open water when I need to go too far from the side, more than 50 meters, whereas I can swim easily 1500 meters in a pool. In the sea, if I am swimming in clear water like in Greece, I feed confident, whereas it´s true there are some rosa jellyfishes but they are still beautiful. Actually, I love seeing the sea beauty and the animals all around me. But I live in Europe. I decided to swim in open water for my first triathlon S in a lake. Step by step! And during a triathlon they are so many people all around you and the safety people so no way you can have issues there. It is also a wonderful idea th stay focused on the strocke numbers. I would loveto beat this fear as I tried surfing a couple of times and it was stunning! Learning by doing!

I am literally shaking in my boots even thinking about being in open water. I could be in the deeper parts of the lakes when I was younger (5 or 6) but back then I didn’t even know what milfoil was much less all the stuff that could be hiding in it (probably just a couple fish and maybe a crayfish or two) and I totally get the whole the fear is irrational in deep waters thing and I live in the pacific NW of Washington so the biggest thing I’m gonna come across is a big sockeye salmon and the only thing that could hurt me is a turtle, it’s just something about it that creeps me out not being able to see the bottom of that 600 ft deep lake much less seeing what’s gonna attack me (searched it up all there is are a couple of trout with the occasional salmon). Anyway I’m just rambling, the point is I have nothing to fear about lakes but I’m still terrified.

I'am very curious of what kind of fears people experience thinking of swimming in open water....? Mine is more an irrational one too....To be dragged down by something at my feet, or suddenly stumbling at a dead body what imerges to the surface, not knowing what is under the water and fear for jellyfish or other water creatures.... I swim 3 times a week in water wich is pitch dark. My fears certainly are less in water where i can look at the bottom...or when the water is more clear. Beside that , I do loooove to swimm underwater with my whole body and face....i am most scared about the feet part when I am vertical.... And I feel already more relaxed to read a lot of people have the same fears about what is down below and the not knowing...very existential ones I imagen :) Thanks for sharing.

I used to be an incredibly confident swimmer, did comps as a kid and stuff. I swam in the sea regularly and had no problems unless the current was so strong that I was stuck still using full strength and had to get a life guard to bring me and my friends back. That's not what entirely scared me though. I started getting a worse fear after being stung two times, almost stepping on a stone fish once and a huge stingray another time. A poisonous shell I almost picked up and fish with painful spikes-- basically anything that hurt me or almost killed me is why I am now absolutely terrified to swim in the ocean or lakes again. What if one day a box jellyfish is around and I die, yknow? Maybe there are safer waters than the ones in Australia, but if I can't clearly see through the water or if I'm alone I won't be comfortable at all. Needless to say, I should consider using your techniques regardless. I just always remember that if I die or get injured in the water- it's because it's the sea creatures home, not mine.

I'm now in Muscat and trying to do my first steps (or rather strokes) in the sea and I regret now reading all those comments here 🤣 I counted for some positivity not horror stories 🤣 first time, I went swimming, I used a person close to the beach as a reference point. I learned soon enough I mistook a ship far far away for that person's head. I didn't go very far but little bit of fear kicked in. I changed direction and then laid on my back for a few seconds and then swam towards better "reference point". Tomorrow, next session and I will focus on some "feeling comfortable" drills rather than actual swimming. I think it's more important than collecting swimming miles right now 😁

I’m not worried about the stuff these guys talk about in the vid. I don’t really have the fear of drowning or not being able to see the bottom cause I’m a pretty strong swimmer. This sounds stupid but I’m terrified of fish. I am a pool swimmer and came to open water swimming as a way to keep swimming over quarantine and I actually think I’ll keep doing open water swimming after COVID-19 and take it up. Currently i swim with my eyes closed and only open my eyes when breathing to the side and sighting. I’m also really uncomfortable when swimming through weeds and vegetation because as I don’t open my eyes I don’t expect it. I plan to compete at nationals and really take open water seriously. (I’m not a triathlete just regular open water swimming competitions on their own.) Will this affect my swimming??? Im 13 and can swim 1500 metres in 17 mins and 42 seconds and 2000m in 23 mins and 38 seconds and I think that’s pretty decent for my age. I don’t know how to get over this fear and I’m scared it’s gonna screw up my open water AND pool swimming career. I start swimming again in a regular pool tomorrow and I’m anxious that I’ll find it weird opening my eyes or my technique has changed to suit open water swimming and I won’t be as fast as I used to. Any tips??

I think what spark this was sea related horror movies and the horrible nightmares they gave me. I once a a dream where I fell off a pier into a huge body of water and remember turning around and seeing this huge sea monster that looked like the Loch Ness monster + a snake. On top of that watching videos of 30 foot anacondas in the muddy waters of Africa.

I know this sounds silly but my biggest fear connected to these deep waters - come from a scene of Nemo. The one where they were swimming through sea mines attached to seemingly infinite long chains going down into the unknown. If I see a Buoy or something else connected to a chain --- if I see that chain - I panic hardcore

I don’t even know what I’m scared of. I’ve been scared since I was little but I’ve successfully gone in... sort of twice 😄 edit: Actually three but the last time I went in I went into the bioluminescence bay and we had life jackets and held onto a rope... and I thought the life jacket was choking me. I flipped out and the next time I got into water, it was literally a jacuzzi and there was pressure on my chest and I was not feeling it anymore.

I don't agree with such fears being irrational... at least not when it comes to swimming in the sea. Even in the least suspected areas we've had sharks, orcas and whales get lost. It doesn't even have to be a huge animal like that... you could encounter jelly fish, get tangled up in seaweed, or simply get caught in a stream or get smashed against the rocks... the tide, wind and waves can change very quickly. Also make sure to stay out of the water when there's sea fog, or storm clouds.

This is literally every adult who has tried to take up swimming later in life at first - I'm pretty sure it's normal, at least the first time in the pool. Heather and co would probably have better advice but I'd say stick a pull buoy between your legs and maybe put a snorkel on then swim slowly focusing on one arm after the other. When I started I followed a programme called 0-1650 and it was really good at gaining endurance.

I just started swimming in January so I have been where you are. 50 meters and I was gasping for air. There is so much to focus on when you first start. Eventually I made myself continue after a 50, to a 100, then a 200 and so on. After the first 50-100 I tend to relax and settle in to a good pace. I suggest just keep trying and progressing slowly. It got easier for me once I got the breathing down. I have done two sprint tri's this year though and I have freaked out in the middle of both of those, and I find it very hard to calm myself down when I'm in the middle of a lake. But I expect this will fade as I continue to do more open water swims and become more comfortable in the lake/ body of water.

Miljan Stojiljkovic it’s really tough starting out with swimming and if you can get a few one on one lessons it will make a big difference. Check out our beginner swimming videos to learn how to relax, blowing out bubbles and letting yourself sink is a good start, then push back up to the surface and get your breath. There are so many tips but can’t fit them all on here. Good luck!

"The fear of open water is irrational." Proceeds to wear a wetsuit, swimming cap and goggles! 1. The claim about floating is not true. Skinny people sink. This is especially true in big waves. 2. Open water has biting fish, stinging jellyfish, sharp stones, crabs, etc. Some places even have sharks. 3. Open water is usually cold. 15 celcius is very different from 22 celcius. Water leads heat much better than air, so temperature differences are more significant. 8 celcius in the water is horrible compared to 8 celcius on land. (I'm assuming no wetsuit or clothing.) 4. There is no lifeguard. 5. There can be currents. 6. Large waves can be difficult to swim in, and difficult to land in, on rocky shorelines.

Well, you show a lake....did you consider open water full of cargo vessels of up to 400,000 tons and with no brakes? The other thing I noticed is that you move your legs and foots in circles for floating, while is better the bicycle move to push down (according to what the experts say)
