I just planted all my potatoes here in the us a few weeks ago. And dispite all the rumors about store bought being sprayed and unable to grow. They are not. I had a 5 lb bag from Christmas time tgat got shoved out of sight in the bottom of the pantry. M9st of the bag was hairy monsters lol but 6 potatoes were absolutely root free and we ate them. Its cold and dark in that part of the pantry. But the rest went right out into buckets with the french fingerlings amd Russian banana fingerling potatoes. I also grow those little fancy creamer potatoes that are the rage. Red and gold ones. They are almost weeds if you dont screen your soil and didn't find every one-they are that hardy. Thr tomatoes and beans are heading out later this week as our last frost date just past. I also would recommend if they grow in your area. Fava beans or broad beans. Very high in protein. But they dont grow everywhere I'm told.

Corn, squash/pumpkin, and beans are great companion plants. I forget the exact reasons why, but something like the corn gives the beans a place to climb, the beans add nitrogen to the soil, and the squash/pumpkin acts at mulch/ground cover to hold in moisture.

Years ago in mid-late autumn I had a black cherry tomato plant self seed in a crack in the concrete next to my back pergola, I left it to do its thing through the winter, never watered or cared for it in any way, it grew huge and I think I got more yield off it than any tomato plant that I purposely grew and cared for, they truly do have a wide soil type tolerance.

A new one to me this year was Caigua. This grows into a really attractive vine, which I had growing up a trellis at the back of a bed. it produces gherkin-like fruit, which, when small, can be eaten raw. They taste like a cross between a snap pea and cucumber. When they get older, (with inedible black seeds which have to be scraped out), they are too tough to eat raw. Surprisingly, they cook up really well, whether baked, or stir fried. Lots of good vitamins etc, and seemed problem free. I'll be growing them again this coming spring.

As a meat eater. Pumkin leaves is one of my favorite veg. So flavourful bu you need to clean it properly. You can eat the male pumkin flower too. I dont really eat actually pumkin because 80% on market are flavourless
@Elynis1196

Corn, beans, and pumpkin are part of the three sisters crops. Each one helps the other grow. You can put them all in one bed or mound. Corn goes first. When he reaches about a foot tall, plant the beans. They will use the corn as a trellis and grow up that instead of needing something separate. Pumpkin is started after the beans start to climb the corn. They’re a huge food provider, but their biggest help is ground cover. It shades out weeds and helps retain moisture in the soil. Together they make complete meals. If you’re careful you can even keep the corn husks for tamales!

I think i just had a great idea..... Truck bed liners as garden beds. I think its genius. They are corrugated at the bottom, raise the back a little so it is sloped for water to run out ,or just naturally do that with the land, stake the back and sides for support fill with your own choice of dirt and boom, a great weedless garden bed.

Onions. Onions are like the ultimate food crop for me for three reasons: 1. You can eat any part of them (bulb, stem, flower), 2. You can propagate them from seeds OR scraps of the bulb (roots, which we don't eat), meaning you can eat *and* propagate it, 3. Perhaps most importantly, wild animals like deer and gophers tend to avoid them. Plus, they have strong flavor so they can also be used as seasoning.

I would add beets and change pumpkin to winter squash of certain types. The winter squash you want are the ones with the deep orange color. It contains more vitamins than pumpkin. On tomatoes, you want to get the "indeterminate" types. The determinate ones tend to give you a whole bunch all at once and then nothing after it. The indeterminate types keep growing and spreading and producing. Some of the "cherry" tomato types will continue to produce green tomatoes long after the season ends and it is too cool. You pick them when they stop getting bigger and let them ripen indoors. This can give you months more tomatoes until the frost kills the plants.
