TERMS
Undocumented
An undocumented student is a foreign national who: (1) entered the United States without inspection or with incomplete documents; or (2) entered legally as a nonimmigrant but then violated the terms of their status and remained in the United States without authorization (as defined by the National Immigration Law Center).
DACA
In addition to protection from deportation, DACA recipients are eligible for work authorization, a social security number, and, through state laws, a state-issued ID or driver’s licenses. DACA does not grant lawful status such as a visa or green card, nor does it offer a pathway to U.S. citizenship.
Financial Aid
Money to help pay for college, university or career school. Grants, work-study, loans, and scholarships are types of financial aid that help make college or career school affordable.
Naturalization
The process by which U.S. citizenship is granted after meeting the requirements established by Congress in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).
Grants
Grants, unlike loans, are sources of free money that generally do not have to be repaid. Grants can come from the federal government, your state government, your college or career school, or a private or nonprofit organization.
Higher Education
In the United States, higher education is considered to be voluntary studies beyond the high school level.
