Nice video! Well, 17h of use with full GPS and heart rate accuracy on the “basic” Low Power Mode seems sufficient for me haha. I starting to really training and doing trail run, my biggest run on race day was 4h till now. Looking forward on getting de Ultra and replacing my series 6!

I'll say this: the low-power mode should be great for camping trips where you still want to have some activity logging, or those times when you've completed a long activity (like a hike or marathon) and just need a bit of extra juice to handle the rest of the day. Could be particularly important if you're using the cellular connection.

For sure, ideal for camping and backpacking. Not as ideal for faster paced activities.

Great video. I kept both the 955 and my Ultra for now. I can’t stand running with a phone and I prefer listening to audiobooks on my runs. I really have not found much value in training readiness in either Garmin or Athlytic. I do use HRV4Training and also pay more attention to how I feel / muscle soreness/ etc. I track my workouts with intervals.icu. Garmin doesn’t add any extra value for my strength training or CrossFit. And I use a bike computer not a watch when riding.

I wonder why they don’t have a more middle ground. Going from 1 second updates for HR/GPS to 1/2 minute intervals is a big jump. Perhaps a 30 second interval would be a better compromise between accuracy and battery life.

Great video thanks a lot, I have a Apple Watch Ultra thinking about getting the 3 when it comes out but also thinking about getting a Garmin fenix 7 pro sapphire solar because I’m doing my first ultra next may (56 miles) and worried that the ultra might not last, with the standard low power mode and brightness turned down, would you think the Apple ultra will last the 56 miles or better off getting a Garmin? I’m extremely on the fence atm as I love the ultra just paranoid it won’t last the 56 miler. Thanks a lot 🙏🏼

So, if I get the message correctly, Apple made a limited release for Ultratrac, which has been around for 10ish years on a lot of Garmin devices. I know my F2 had it, and now I checked, the F5 (5 years ago) had exactly the same 60 hour promised in ultratrac mode. Not bashing apple, every feature release is welcome (although I'm baffled how many people are actually targeted here), but I have similar feelings like I had when a year ago Polar introduced catch-up navigation features.
@rubarb1275
@rubarb1275 Жыл бұрын
I think you were being kind to the gps results - they were a long way off when comparing the navigation accuracy. I would be reluctant to use this low power mode given the likely issues in the results. It works be interesting to see if Apple can add a sliding scale of lower power mode, say taking gps every 5 or 10 seconds, so you get slightly worse results but slightly better battery.

Good morning Mr. Dave. Do you know if Apple has improved the Low-Low Power mode in Watch OS 10 Beta? I did a 10 miler this morning with the Apple Watch Ultra Public Beta Watch OS 10 with a Garmin Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar with surprising results. The APU had a couple wonky GPS tracks, but was really good. The Garmin performed perfectly as usual for me. Thank you, and I appreciate you, your channel, and content. Keep Chasing the Summit?

I went from a Fenix 7X Sapphire to the ultra. I was between the ultra and Epix 2. The fact that I am mostly needing this for the gym and CrossFit, and I did not like/need the complexity on the watch I moved back to the Apple Watch. If I could have afforded both I would have kept the Garmin. If I do start working toward a marathon or Triathalon I will add a garmin just for training.

It would be nice to have a low power mode with reduced HR readings setting in normal mode too and not only in workout mode. Enabling low power mode completely disables HR reading, which is silly.. it's all or nothing right now

So reduced accuracy mode is perfect for multi-day paved walks like the Camino de Santiago, but less so for anything strenuous or off-route. I’m assuming the moderate accuracy during on road runs is more due to accelerometer integration than Apple Maps- which is likely why only on foot activities are included.

The reason Apple Watch is so accurate on total distance even with GPS reduced data is the high sampling rate accelerometers. Apple has been nailing this for a long time now. Augmenting GPS with accelerometer data. It’s like a Stryd foot pod for your wrist. That said, your second test showed it short, which is not expected since when garmin gets distance wrong it will typically be short. See if you can talk to Apple about their gps vs accelerometer algorithm and find out more details. It sounds like they need to rely even more on accelerometer data when in this reduced gps data mode but maybe they are also turning down the sample rate of the accelerometers as well to save power and just not telling us.

The most impressive thing I took away from this video, Dave, is that you are coming up on 100k followers. 👍👍👍 Much more impressive than low-power mode (particularly since I decided to pick up a Series 7 45mm for $300 - which will not get this update😏)

If you wanna talk to your wrist and watch YT on it then go with Ultra. If sports is your thing then Garmin with button navigation, resume later option during activity, pulling HR every second outside of activity and best in class battery life all the way :)

It really depends what you are doing with your watch and what you want to get out of it. If you mainly want a sport watch the Garmin is probably a better tool. If you want a better smartwatch with cellular capabilities the Apple Watch is much better in that regard.

@@ChaseTheSummit Paired to the hrm pro plus the Garmin 955 is amazing and the training readiness score feedback is nice to have to know when to push it or not. With having two boys under 5 it is nice to know when to do this since sleep is always in the gutter. The Apple Watch Ultra had trouble getting a heart rate with my run today. This is the second time this has happened. The Apple Watch Ultra is likely going back. Besides I am always switching between Apple and Android and Garmin is amazing when it comes to switching. Thanks for the insights everyone.

when the device is charged at 100%, the data on the loss of charge may not be accurate, because the drop in charge from 100% to 99% can be much longer than from 99% to 98% and so on (когда устройство заряжено на 100%, то данные о потере заряда могут быть не точными, потому что падение заряда с 100% до 99% может быть гораздо дольше, чем с 99% до 98% и так далее)

I think the low-power mode will only really be useful for slower multi-day hikes where you aren't moving very fast. 12hrs of tracking time is concerning though. Seems like it won't be enough to get through a more technical 50-mile race. We have a 50 miler here that has a 17hr cutoff.

Any word on when following a course will be possible with native apps on Apple Watch?that’s probably more interesting for an order of magnitude of people than the very few who need 60h uninterrupted of activity recording; everyone else can recharge with a lipstick size portable battery enough for a few more days

@lastlondon
@lastlondon Жыл бұрын
That’s unfortunate. There’s nothing ultra about a watch meant to go to the end of the world if it doesn’t offer you the ability to follow a course; almost by definition if you’re out to explore then you will be unfamiliar with the area and will need a map/route. Also, if you’re out for an daylong trail run then you need to be able to follow a trail; no one can navigate from memorised waypoints those long trails for the first time. It’s a shame that able doesn’t get it; this isn’t meant to be an Apple Watch for soccer moms
