About the heart shape: Here in Germany, the story about the shape is quite nicely documented. The main story goes like this: The origin of the shape was the ivy leaf. Certain members of the ivy family have a round and heart shaped leaf when young. The reason on why the ivy was chosen is based on a few factors: the ancient Greeks knew that ivy can become very old. Some can be up to 400 years old. So it stood for health and long life. Also, ivy can be turned into medicine. Another point is the fact that ivy can be a ever green plant. Even in the coldest winter. So, in the dark ages the ivy was used as a metaphor for health and to be vivid. And that was often used to compare the love of the people to someone. Fun fact: back then, love was rather symbolized with the color green than red. Red was added later, as blood was added into the meaning of the heart and thus the red ivy leaf was the new symbol of the heart.

In my opinion, the white candies kind of look like shark teeth. Shark week special maybe?

Watching him make this candy is low key satisfying as hell for some reason. I ended up in a trance-like state watching him do what he was doing for the whole video. I know i can't be the only one that found this satisfied and ended up in a trance too.

Oh I can actually answer the heart thing! Most people believe that it was because of the ban on dissection during the middle ages. So most people didn't know what a human heart looked like. And if you look at a real heart, you'll notice it DOES somewhat look like the right shape (because of the way the chambers are situated), if you take away the arteries and veins and if you look at it from a certain angle. So considering the simplistic art style of the time, many believe that it was the artists' interpretation from what doctors were telling them it looked like. Plus back then people strongly believed that the soul dwelled in the physical heart, and that the heart was responsible for emotions. So by the time that the Victorian era came about with its proper medical dissections in med school, the cultural view of the heart had had centuries to cement itself into the public consciousness. Now it's used to represent the metaphorical heart, opposed to the physical one.

I would love to see a store tour. I live in Australia and I don't think I'll ever travel the I-10 to visit the store.

I've watched many candy making videos, but this is without s doubt, the best one I've ever seen. I loved the history of the shape of the heart, as well as little bits of information about why you do certain things during the candy making process. As a side note, you also have a really soothing voice, so it was a very calming video to watch!!

What do you do with the candy "dust" that's left over? I was wondering if you could bag it up and sell it as cake sprinkles or something. It's pretty and probably 100% tastier than regular cake or cookie decorative sugars. Excellent video!

I heard that the heart shape was meant to represent two anatomical hearts attached together, supposedly as a reference to Plato's Symposium myth (the one in which soulmates originally were one person with eight limbs split apart by Godly force, etc. etc.) No clue if that's valid at all.

Some animals' hearts do look like the iconic heart shape. Hell, under some angles the human heart kinda looks like it too. At least as much as "two hearts put agains one another" or whatever, and that's why that theory is just popular nonsense.

The 10th to 12th centuries perhaps would have been the ideal time for the symbol to come back into vogue with the rise of Scholasticism and a big influx of surviving Roman texts.

I heard the shap came from vague descriptions of the heart from pre-dark ages surgeons doing autopsy, then when that sort of thing became illegal people only had these poorly vague descriptions of a heart to go off of.

Well as gruesome as it sounds, it is actually 2 human hearts sewn together to show the love and connection between the people.
