600,000 Mile GMC Sierra Leaked Oil EVERYWHERE Replacing And Deleting Oil Cooler Lines

The 600,000 mile GMC Sierra is running strong, but it's developed a very common oil leak and we already had the parts in the shop to fix it. The oil cooler lines typically develop a leak around the crimp that holds the rubber line to the metal. Apparently the easy fix is to cut the metal back a bit and replace it with some hydraulic line and a couple hose clamps. If you do that it will prevent you from hours of fighting a very poorly engineered "quick" disconnect. After reading about the fix for a minute after we did hours of work I found out the fix is to delete the oil cooler housing and go back to the original style the 350s came with. 1 trip to O'Reillys and 20 minutes later the lines were gone, we were able to run a bigger filter with more surface area, the oil leaks are gone, and as a bonus oil changes are way easier with the filter pointing down!

@@jlambo9757 I used Fluid Film for the first time this past year. The most accurate description of the stuff is in fact "Waxy Goop". It is neither a nicely flowing fluid, nor an even film. But, other than that it seems to work well.

I had to change the gasket on my oil filter housing before on my 1996 GMC Truck. If I remember rightly it wasn't that bad of a job. These old trucks are worth saving instead of scrapping if possible.

I have a 1995 GMC Sierra K1500 with the 5.7L too. I had to replace the O-rings and the gasket on the oil filter adapter last month. The biggest issue I had was finding the right O-rings for the cooler lines. I eventually had to settle on some A/C O-rings simply because they were the closest match to the old O-rings. I don't know how well they'll last me in the long run, but for now I can run it without worrying about dripping oil from the adapter. As you said in the description, quick-disconnects do suck and take a long-ass time to take out and by the time you take them out, you realize you broke them. 😠 I wouldn't do the oil cooler delete bc I made it work, but I didn't do the exact same repair you did. Was fun as hell watching you do something that I'm (for the most part) familiar with anyways, keep up the good videos.

@@uncleheide They are trash, but its been hitting 100+ F here lately. So it was between hating Dorman ( which I do ) or sweating through my clothes. I picked the " Dorman hopefully it holds up " option. Paid something like 700 dollars for a Evap Core, Hoses, Condenser, compressor ect. Thats WAY better than the 4 grand Toyota wanted. I know Dorman sucks, but sometimes you gotta choose

You shouldn't make people think that AC filters are bad. I worked for GM garages for many years, and they've always been good. I believe in using OEM parts.

Wow that's a ton of miles, I had a 95 Sierra that finally gave up after 424,000. I ran all Amsoil synthetic fluids and lubes. It's sitting in my garage now, I might rebuild it one day but for now I have my 78 Golden Eagle Jeep and 2018 Sierra.

I just bought OEM ACDelco oil cooling lines that came with everything I needed for a 97 GMC Sierra which were an exact fit as I didn't have to click anything on but bolt on.

What I ran into with oil lines and later trans lines on a 2002 Express 3500, here in the salt belt, is the ends swell up when they rot and do not come out. You end up cutting them off and change the fitting also. Which I did with salvage yard stuff. On that van it had quick disconnects on both ends, a little clip like the one on your window crank handle holds them in place. For whatever reason I don't think vans use the style on this truck, I also changed some on a 1991 and they were spin on on both ends, in multiple sections, I had a hard time finding lines for that one. But my 95 van, my first van, had a lot of one year only stuff so who knows. That one was a 1-ton van that for some reason had pickup type manifolds and converter (they dump about a 45' angle) instead of what the books said it should have (dump straight down between middle and end ports). I gotta think that changing your fittings to the next style would be as simple as a trip to the junkyard and picking whichever end fittings you're comfortable with and using them on your filter housing. Or changing out the entire oil filter adapter.

replaced some oil cooler lines on my old 98 suburban for the same failure. also replaced the disconnect fittings on the block so it would have fresh seals there as well. never leaked after that and no running low on oil either.

Gotta love GM pickups. My buddy who is a contractor has a bunch of them still in use with his company. 2003 duramax with 400,000 miles. 2000 3/4 ton 6.0L with 330,000 miles. 2000 3/4 ton with 280,000 miles. The duramax he bought new, but the gas 3/4 tons he buys at about 300,000 miles for $2000-$3000. I thought that is a lot of money to pay for high mileage ones like that, but he is not afraid of them.

I had trouble with every QD fitting on my 95 Suburban. I deleted every one I had to touch using fittings and hose clamps. So far our 99 Suburban hasn't had any of those issues

The 06 chevy van we have at work completely blew the crap plastic snap on oil cooler lines last year. It left a line of oil and a huge puddle under it from puking everywhere. I noticed a rattle as he pulled into the parking lot and told him that it probably was low on oil and I was going to check it out while he went in to get some lunch. I found a huge puddle and a line of oil leading from the truck. If he'd driven it any farther it probably would have locked up. Chevy truly does some stupid stuff with the lines and fittings that just do crap like we've both seen.

I broke my oil cooler on my 90 Suburban. Looped it til I got home but noticed my oil ran hotter, which lowered my oil PSI when hot. Oil cooler recommended.

Wow, it looks just like mine except I have the older model with the bad filter adapter and separate oil coolers... and i have a lot of stuff like just these things to do on it someday. That's the horrible quick connection they used on the water hose for the cab heat on the old thermostat housing, I deleted my leaking one for a normal barbed fitting and normal hose.

You can just bypass the oil cooler by unbolting the oil filter adapter and screwing the filter directly on the engine. You gotta move the fitting out of the adapter to the engine. But you can fix this for free. Ive done it twice on 4.3's and it works great. You dont need the oil cooler.

Wow, clean body, if that was here in Minnesota would be rusted from 8 months of road salt. Love them, had '83 k2500 w/ 350ci, 180k, those GM Trucks, check fluids and replace them daily. Who 🙋‍♂️ has had to replace gaskets (valve cover) more than once because you screwed it up?

You talked about upsizing the oil filter - are there rules of thumb to follow? Bigger is better from a more filter media perspective, and I have absolutely no issue with adding oil system capacity in that way, but is there such a thing as too big a filter if the space is there for it?

I fought mine changing them too but ultimately prevailed. I will say this ,as a longtime chevy truck guy that engines lasted longer after the coolers were added My 95 suburban has 270k untouched.

Its not so much the cooler as it is more frequent oil changes. My silverado is closing in on 300,000 and doesn't have an oil cooler in it. The cooler is more for heavy towing than it is normal driving.

@@SteveBassen who knows with GM. It's weird what trucks have these and which ones don't. I've seen trucks with towing packages that didn't have the oil cooler and lines and trucks without the towing package that did have them. Normal driving in the summer my oil temp averages about 208 and going up the long mountain highway roads it'll jump to about 220 then cool down when back on flat road.

Ford's OBS oil cooler consisted of only 1 seal and coolant hoses. Never failed ever. All the trucks they failed to put a big transmission cooler on promptly failed though. Not sure if GM did the same. But to get the coolers on the Fords you had to have the towing or cooling upgrade package

I had a 95 Blazer that the oil cooler lines failed on at the crimp. I ground off the crimps and replaced the hose.

1995 was a weird year for GM trucks. New dashboard and interiors, first year for the 4 door Tahoe. I think GM either ran out of time and/or money on the 1995 redesign, the multiport FI "Vortec" engine wasnt quite ready so they stuck the same 350 TBI engine in there

Inhave an 08 sierra with the 5.3l... Oreillys says the adapter/delete is compatible but im unsure if the replacement is as straight forward?

Probably gonna have to do the gaskets on the adapter to the side of the block.

Ok. Could we get a better explanation of the final repair? I heard something about transmission line, and cutting something. Plus the oil adaptor. What was the new filter size?

I was wondering why you were even bothering with replacing the oil cooler lines on a 4wd. On the GMT800s, you really need to drop the front diff in order to access everything. But an oil cooler block off plate is cheap, and installs in minutes.
