Its hillarious to watch internet experts keep saying, "get rid of your first generation Chevy small block, you can't make any streetable power out of those, you need an LS". bullshift. back in the days of the big three--cam, carb, and compression--it wasn't easy to get past 400 hp when only a set of stock fuelie heads were available, but the days of "only Crane Fireball heads" or a trip to Joe Mondello are done and over. But the LS fans still let these first gen stuff go for dirt cheap, so let 'em keep complaining. The deal with the LS is that it has a deep skirt Y block design that creates a large crankcase volume, reducing pumping losses on the pistons as they descend like a parachute, while the valve angles are the same as a Pontiac V8 and the cathedral ports flow as much air as most aftermarket chevy engine ports.

The LS platform has its advantages for sure. For me, I'm a bit old school and like the stuff I cut my teeth on. You are correct, back in the day 450hp was a street killer and took lots of work to get there. Today 600 plus is a simple deal
@philthelawnman
@philthelawnman Жыл бұрын
Hey keep in mind there were cars from Detroit rated at 250hp but that was at 1,800 rpm so at almost idle for insurance reasons. Like the 302 chevy. You could get 500 out of them on Friday and race on Saturday
@albertgaspar627
@albertgaspar627 Жыл бұрын
@@philthelawnman Agreed, and I don't mean to sound like a flathead V8 fan in 1965 knocking the new GTO tripower. The LS design and the new Hemi can make affordable power on a dyno. But then you buy everything necessary to fit into an engine compartment not designed for it (ie, $400 throttle by wire gas pedals, $1,000 electronic steering systems, etc) and the cost hits you then. Ford is accused of overrating their FE engines from the 1960's, but for the most part you're right even with the old rating system of open exhaust and no alternators on, there was an underrating. Chevy even learned a lesson from the Hemi--the first street 426's were built loose to get them out there and winning, expected to be bought by owners who would tear them down to blueprint. problem was, rich kids would buy the hottest thing the dealer had and come right back with intake bolts in the intake manifold. so when chevy came out with the L88, it was 430 hp--and the L71 tripower, designed for the street and warantees, was rated at 435 so that non racers and vets home with combat pay would grab the L71 427 instead and not bug the dealerships with the issues of a full-outhouse race engine in their corvettes. but we all knew it made a lot more.

I've always been a big fan of the "Gladiator 350" build from the early 00's. It made 524hp from a ZZ4 bottom end, AFR 190 heads, Comp 254/260 solid roller with 5.83 lift on 92 octane.

I'm a lot like yourself. I built my 1st engine at 15 yrs old. I bought and read the book called how to Hotrod a small block Chevy. Read it cover to cover multiple times. I got my hands on an older Chevy station wagon. Well the wagon was loaded from the factory. Everything was heavy duty and built to tow. I only really wanted the Turbo 400 transmission it had. Come to find out it was a 4 bolt main block. I followed a step by step approach to build an exact replica of the 1970 LT1 375 hp 350. I think it was 375 or 370. Not sure now. It was more than 40 yrs ago. But I had all of the right parts. Fulie 202 heads, a steel crank, the factory Winters 4 barrel intake and the optional 3972178 solid lifter cam. Although I did use a set of Harlan Sharp roller rockers. That motor ripped! Keep up the good work. Love reading these types of stories. There's still a few of us, of this dying breed, left in the world.

Great job. Real motor for real guys. I don't think people realize how dependable a motor like that is. Circle track guys run prepped 2 bolt blocks all the time. If you never use more nitrous than it should have, no problems. In the early 90s my running buddy had a 79 C10 with w 2bolt cast 400 crank and 5.65 rods swinging cast pistons. He put over 10 bottles thru that mill in the next couple of years before he broke a ring gland. It smoked but, ran. we pulled it down and replace 1 piston. The tune determines how something lives. If you need 4 bolt mains, steel h beams and super expensive pistons, you might need wiggle for poor tuning practices. You did a great job and will have many runs with that combo. Best of luck to you. Keep up the good work.

@sc358. 11 ай бұрын
With 13.2:1, 384.6 cubes and a 2.10" 23° setup, I'd probably run 109 lobe centerline (or the 106 he has at 11.5:1 or less and 112 at 14.5:1, 114 at 15.5:1...). And I'd target the duration based off what I thought overlap should be for that combination. So I'd guess he's probably making more avg power with a 106 vs a 112-114 in this case.

U Squirreled out find a high nickel 2 Bolt it's a good platform no matter what some of these people might think.I have built plenty of Circle Track Motors running roughly the same combination and Power $6,000 for 600 horse that's a heck of a deal should plenty of good runs without any problems and yes I will share this with a few hundred friends knowledge is always going to be power✌

Watch that timing chain Cloyes set are great but if you are not running the right set they will stretch I use the Cloyes Race Billet sets in setup similar to yours. If the chain stretches depending on how much compression you have predation can be a problem and I will tear the engine up. I like the AED carbs these engine love the gas

Like looking in the mirror bud lol, I love to put my own engines together, I have an 88 foxbody and have been 10.50s so far with a 347 turbo setup, now I've put a 363 with 88mm turbo and can't wait to see how this one runs

wow! i am building a 374 cubic inch daily driver pump gas engine. its 302 based and looks like a 302 when it is done, i am getting the dart large bore 302 for it and finish bore to 4.185" and the deck at 8.2" , it has 302 mains with 4 bolt mains, its just for a daily driver street car. 5.4" rods, 3.4" stroke, would be a 347 in a stock 302 block. The piston is an inch and barely something so there you go, it may not like boost as i am going with a 2618 low expansion , kind of like a hypereutectic piston i guess, but the modern take on a hyper forging, its good material others say, or a mahle piston, well i think that is the piston i am shall use, it shall have pump gas and good drivability so not big power, yet shall be great in a daily driver N/A. Plan on using trick flow R series heads, probably the 180-200cc runners instead of the 170 but who knows yet, with a smallish hydraulic or even small solid roller cam. and a 5 speed and 8.8 rear end. could go into a pinto, any mustang , or even camaro or whatever, i would like to put it into a vette, any camaro, 67-69 firebird or factory five 65 or 32 coupe also.

Right on being safe out there driving all the time.been driving when I got out of the army in the 1982 off and on still doing it, so being safe I am. I had a bad month last year and month December the 7 my 18 year old out of three boys, he left to go to work two miles from house hit a semi truck head on he died. not truck drivers fault, he’s ok just a broke leg. then my father is die ing with pancreatic cancer he has maybe a month, and then my brothers wife died the 30 of December all in one month. so trying hard to get through it all, waiting on autopsy to see why my son hit the semi head on. He was a good son, every much like, turned 18 July 25 2021 . Got him a pickup truck 2008 4 wheel drive dodge, he started at 14 with the firefighter department. he loved helping people, well I let you know a little of me what I am going through and so I’ll see ya next time see ya bye bye.

What a stout motor! Love it, that’s what research and lots of thinking gets you instead of just slapping one together with a hoj poj of parts! Oh and what gas do you use?

If you were 30 right now you would have a computer job and build computers. Most oldies know carbs and most youngins know efi when it comes to motors. You seem like all of us, great video.

I built a sbc 355 with 6"rods 12.75 comp afr 210 outta the box heads and Crane nitrous solid roller 262 270@ .50 630 lift. It definitely made close to 600 im sure from how fast the car was.

Nice video and SBC, Im working on a Gen 2 LT1 350. It wont make that much power though. Its going in a driver. I was thinking I might need a 4 bolt main but my 2 bolt will be just fine, I'll be under 400 hp when its done. Thanks
