600W LDMOS power amplifier

3 жыл бұрынI completed another amateur radio project. I made a 600W LDMOS shortwave power amplifier. The most interesting thing is that the settings can be made on a 7-inch touch screen, and on this screen you can see a lot of useful information during operation, such as output power, temperature, SWR, and so on. The power amplifier includes 2 MRF300 LDMOS FETs and several built-in sensors. The amplifier also contains several types of protection functions (too high current, too high swr, too high temperature, etc.).

Good morning to all Oms and Yls! I have been using a Zoli amplifier like this for several months! It works reliably and without problems. A high-quality work and also looks great ❤️ Thanks to Zoli for this work and to whom he put all his skills and heart and soul into it. The amplifier is light in weight and you can easily find space for it in the shack. The only thing I don't like is the volume of the fan... but because I'm constantly working with headphones, I hardly notice it. Overall a super great device, well secured against any incorrect operation by the operator‼️THANK YOU ZOLI👍

wow! excellent job, well done! Years ago i built a 2 x 4cx250b valve amplifier in push-pull configuration for 2m. It had 2.5kV on the anodes and was force cooled with a large snail blower fan! This looks much nicer and safer! 73 de G6PHF

Very nice amplifier ! I got that board somewhere, waiting to get built ... Tube amplifiers do not need to be quite so Huge - take a look at old Zetagi stuff.

Hi, thank you! Yes it is true. But I think tube amps generate too much heat and are noisier than solid state amps. Semiconductors are the future!!!

@@hg7an_ham_projects Weight is an issue with tube amps but they can be silent ! Look up EX8A's GU-81M amplifier - 3kW no ventilator fans. I'm building a 350W tube amp (2x GU-19) right now, to see how small i can make it. After that i will build the 2xLDMOS 600W amplifier using MHT1803 devices. They are the same as the MRF300 but a lot cheaper. ea7knw

excuse my ignorance but why MRF300 devices are rated to withstand 65:1 SWR and all amplifiers I see are protected to 2:1 ? I even see amps running full power with coax cable being cut with no damage to transistors ? why such tight protection on SWR ?

Dear Aleziss, Actually, the accepted limit for RF power amplifiers is 3: 1 swr. In this case, 25% of the output power is reflected from the antenna connection point and must be dissipated by the amplifier in the form of heat. The purpose of the amplifiers is to deliver 100% of the power through the antenna. In addition, the cooling of the amplifiers is designed in this way. In the case of 65: 1 swr, 94% of the output power must be dissipated in the amplifier in the form of heat and only 6% goes out to the antenna. There is no point in operating the amplifier with such a swr. 73, Zoli

@@hg7an_ham_projects thanks I undestand that running an antenna at 65:1 is not worth it, my initial question is why keep the protection so low when the device can withstand 65:1. So by what I undestand, it is a heat problem that prevent amps to accept hi swr correct ? I did not meant so it could handle 65:1 but 5:1 or even 10:1 wouldn't be a problem if there was a proper cooling system, the ldmos could handle that 10:1 no problem right ?

Dear Aleziss! If you use Ldmos at maximum power (for example, you drive the Mrf300 with about 300 watts out of it), it's not because the fet can't dissipate the extra power that comes back due to that bad swr. If you use fet at low power (e.g. 150w), it will withstand higher swr as well. 73, Zoli

@@hg7an_ham_projects ok another person also mentionned that the capacitors and dozen of relay contacts in the filter board might be damaged when they are subjected really high voltages due to impedances way out of 50ohm, that way I could undestand that the filter board might not handle the high swr but the transistors could survive... thank you for all your replies

@@hg7an_ham_projects I am a dissembled veteran with programming and electronics background. No longer work due to that, so I am planning to set up a nice space I got for home brewing. Vey interested in LDMOS, so I can assemble myself, but most important, learn and practice the whole design. Already done Arduino stuff too. Looking for reference materials, guidance from experts like you, etc. Planning to do the same for all bands, such as HF, and 23 cm, 2 m, etc. Thanks.
