Today is the last day of the effort to recall California Governor Gavin Newsom. One of the leading candidates opposing Governor Newsom is Larry Elder. In 1997, Morley Safer profiled the controversial conservative talk radio host.
"60 Minutes" is the most successful television broadcast in history. Offering hard-hitting investigative reports, interviews, feature segments and profiles of people in the news, the broadcast began in 1968 and is still a hit, over 50 seasons later, regularly making Nielsen's Top 10.

When I hear Larry Elder talk I feel inspired by his words and I’m not even black. Elder is one man who really sees through the liberal bs that is out there and calls it out. Larry is the real legend!!! He is a true national treasure.

Same here. He stands for reason, logic, and lived-in wisdom. His opposition to allowing the black community to feel like victims or feel sorry for themselves forces me to reevaluate my own life. He inspires me to find the ways that I'm giving myself a break, when I should simply understand that things won't always (if even often) go my way, but that that shouldn't deter me from working hard to achieve whatever it is that I'm aim for.

@@MrLTLB , white people are stuck in poverty too. Poverty doesn't have a skin color. He explained the crime statistics. If you commit a crime; you get incarcerated. I guess you think that we shouldn't put black criminals in jail??? Every criminal belongs in jail regardless of skin color. Nobody forces anyone to break the law. Don't blame politicians or red state/blue state for people's personal decisions to break the law. The government isn't responsible for raising you or lifting you out of poverty. Your PARENTS are responsible for raising you and teaching you how to be a productive member of society. Put the blame where it belongs. Personal responsibility.

@@mlasch1478 I don't see Elder doing anything to make positive contributions to the Black community. He constantly downplays the residual effects of 400+ years systemic racism and has made great wealth in doing so. I respect his journey and how he was able to build himself up but the way he sells out our people is sad. And please spare me the "personal accountability" and "victim mentality" buzz words because I am Black, educated, do well for myself, and I always give back to my community. That is why I can confidently say that Elder is a grifter and anyone who believes the contrary is his target audience.

The best thing that youth sports taught me is that there are times where, no matter how hard you work and how smart/talented you are, failure is a periodic fact of life. I recently put in a lot of work to wow an employer, who I believe would offered a great job, except for one problem: he loved somebody else just tiny bit more. Frustrating and demoralizing. It is easy to blame any number of other people or circumstances. But we don't. It is difficult to pick ourselves and try again. But we do. Even if we fail again and again. Setbacks are merely another opportunity to succeed. To me, this seems to be a wrap-around of Larry Elder's message to the black community and to the American community at large.

In addition to the talking heads on mainstream media, I've listened to some of Larry's call-ins on his radio show, and it's basically shown me that blacks, despite being the most vocal about racism, are actually the most racist group in America just by virtue of the fact that they demand certain beliefs and behaviors from all blacks based solely on their skin color, and if you don't conform to those demands you are condemned and it's open season to call you all kinds of nasty names. This reaction by blacks against Larry and other blacks who share his ideology is routinely used as a substitute for honest arguments, often made with a genuine viciousness, hostility and cruelty, and it infuriates me that despite all the racism sensitivity and this passionate devotion for social justice in America it is almost NEVER called out.

I have to admit as a proud Black Australian man of East African Somali descent believe that Black Americans need to be more open minded because Black people are not a monolith period. Here are four simple steps to have a less troubled life step one: graduate from high school, step two: do not have kids before you get married, step three: hold down a job and step four: do not commit crimes. I honestly believe whether you agree or disagree with me as long as you are respectful and tolerant I believe that Black American progressives need to change their attitude by getting rid of the gang culture plus the victim mentality which is a sign of low self-esteem plus weakness. The United States of America needs a huge criminal justice reform, economic reform, gun control reform, police reform, political reform and prison reform. All I could say is that my heart goes out to the Black American community in the United States who are struggling not all but some and I hope they make a huge progress. As human beings we should all follow the three principles of life compassion, empathy and love to have a more perfect union.

While I'm not a black person myself, I do agree and respect this opinion. I can go further and extend it to every person, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. At the end of the day, the first person you have to look out for is yourself. The government won't hold your hand forever or every single time. It's up to the individual to develop the right mindset and push forth in effort to have a successful life. Self-deprecation is only going to hold you back in the long term. That's why I try my best to be kind and polite to other people; everyone could use some kindness in their lives and less toxicity.
