Today I rented an all terrain man lift to work on the mini cabin, It made it back to the cabin surprisingly well. I think spending the money to rent equipment like this is well worth it.

Was laughing so hard at the siding comments. Was a builder for years and the reason the two sides are different is purely decorative. Happy Thanksgiving and look forward to seeing videos from the cabin.

actually the grove on the back is a relief cut to stop the board from cupping.

Thomas Myers: There are lots of variations of T&G siding and it makes a difference in your application as to which one you should use. Here is a link to siding shaped to the way I'm familiar with. www.buffalo-lumber.com/tongue-and-groove-siding/ Go down that page until you get to the "WWPA T&G Siding and Paneling Pattern Diagrams." Pattern "116" was use for vertical applications. Pattern "106" was used for horizontal applications as it would shed water better.

I live in an old 40s era house. Some days it breathes better than I do. It has survived a seasonally wet granite cellar because it could breathe and dry out. The mini cabin is basically shed with great views. I look forward to your heating and furnishing ideas. Each groove on the outside exposes more grain to the weather. Inside, the decorative grooves are protected and help the wood breathe. Mikes way encourages rain and snow to fall off. He leaves only necessary joints exposed. That extra strength can support swings, hammocks or even deer. .Dad said the cabin he built could use a stronger floor Morgan Strong is Fine. God Bless you..

Amazing the people who say they know. I'm a carpenter. You are correct on the siding. You are also correct to let the building breathe. Think of wood as a bundle of straws. That's how the tree gets water from the ground. So when you put wood up, moisture has to be able to escape or it will rot the wood. You are doing a great job. Smart move renting the lift. I enjoy watching your videos. You and your wife are a great team. Your kids are very lucky.

Smart in renting that man lift . I remember you renting one for cleaning your gutters and trimming a few trees . The only difference is that this one is mobile and all terrain . Yep , that siding can go either way . Like the colour of the stain that you picked .You can even clean the gutters on your house if you got time .

Ann and I just finished with the prep work for Thanksgiving dinner and have put the bird in, thought we would take a break and see if Mike and Melissa have put out a video. Happy Thanks Giving to all the Morgans! Oh no...not another, "Why don't you do it this way!" I get so tired of folks telling me how wrong I'm doing things, I guess they think they're doing me a favor. I just thank them and say, "Oh, that's a good idea, next time I do this I'll try it that way." They go off thinking they've saved the world and I'm happy just having peace and quiet to do the job my way. Great video, thumbs up.

G'day from Australia Mike & Melissa and family. We do not celebrate Thanksgiving here in Australia, but I would like to thank you sincerely for the time and effort you put into your channel. I find your videos enjoyable and educational. I actually stumbled upon your channel when researching chainsaw filing several months ago. I then set about watching every video you have uploaded. I have a routine now of watching each new video whilst eating breakfast (time difference of course) and you have also inspired me to get outside and get active. So, I am thankful for the Morgans...have a wonderful day.

Mike and family Happy Thanksgiving. First off Mike it doesn't matter what they think about the siding the only thing that matters is that you and Melissa are happy with it. Someone will always find fault in something. I think you are doing a wonderful job on the mini cabin. I wish I had your talents. I am thankful for family and thankful for finding your channel. There is nothing more entertaining and fun to do than being in the woods and letting nature entertain you. I have farm fields behind my house and I asked the farmer if I could clean out the hedge row along the field behind me so that I could better see the deer in the fields and watch them and he allowed me to do it. Well I hope you and family have a wonderful Thanksgiving

Mike. Mike. Mike. Don’t get so caught up in the comments people make. Heck, don’t get caught up in my comment. First of all, the mini-cabin / blind is out in the woods, does not really matter what it looks like. Just has to make you and Melissa happy. Does not matter which side the tongue and groove faces out, it’s personal preference. I agree with the house wrap. Does not really provide any insulation and will keep moisture inside longer. This could cause rot and worse, mold. I think you are doing a good job at building it. I have two stilted box blinds on my farm and they have been there for 5 years with no problems. We did put down carpet, so can move around without noise for deer hunting. I might replace that next year, but that is because of dirt that is carried in and ground in the carpet. I do lift the carpet each year and place it on it’s side, so the floor can breath. Love watching your videos, because sometimes I get some ideas for stuff around my house and farm. Keep up the good work. Happy Thanksgiving.

Back in the late 60s early 70s just about all the garages in our area were wood siding over studs. We used a T&G product not as wide as you are using, it was Detroit pattern 238 had the decorative on the outside. We would paint all surfaces before installation to help prevent paint peeling from moisture, and if white would help lighten up the interior of the garage because most did not have electric or if it did it was just one bare bulb. We used to rent sections of scaffold for a safe work surface, but you did need to take it down and reset as you moved around the project, that man lift should really be nice to use. I like watching you build the mini cabin, brings back happy memories of my youth. Not sure if I heard what you are using for roofing. If you just put steel directly to your rafters it will be extremely noisy in the rain, a light rain will sound like a downpour, I found that out on my first shed. Happy Thanksgiving.

Mike, I would suggest using a propane vented heater for heating. Pros it will keep carbon monoxide out of the cabin. It will draw fresh air outside for the burner section while venting waste products to the outside. I would also suggest getting a carbon monoxide detector for the cabin. Anytime a flame is used for heating a possibility leaks can occur. Carbon monoxide builds up in your system over time. The only negative point of using a vented heater is that it has to stay mounted to one area. The propane tank can be mounter outside. If you use a manifold several can be linked together so you shouldn't run out.

Mike, those boards can be and are designed to be installed either side out period! As I am typing you just said that! It is purely an appearance option. Your choice! As for bracing your post, you did when you installed your floor joist! You seem to have been attacked by the arm chair carpenters that have never built anything. It is quite common for stud walls to wobble a bit. Any bracing should have been across the studs to secure them during construction if needed. Placed on the inside the bracing is removable and only in the way of leaning between the studs. Once a few runs of siding are up, the braces can be removed.

Mike, you have all the strength for sure, and no matter who says what, size matters, I am right there with you, since we do not know all the stuff on deflection, compression, expansion, contraction, with various atmospheric pressures, temperatures, and all that, we just over build and call it good, engineers are good, smart people with education , sometimes the expertise they have is needed, but one thing I notice in the engineers I know, they tend to design things at at a minimum needed to do some thing, they are all about cost, or at least cost containment, if I build a project, durability and strength are my priority, an engineer friend told me I spent 800 buck on a 500 buck deck... but I can park my tractor on it if needed.

Mike, I'm repeating myself, but the production value of your vids just keeps getting better, pal. The accelerated frame-rate, coupled with the frontal shot of the man-lift and crazy tree swaying in the background was a hoot to watch. It reminded me of Dorothy's trek with companions through the haunted forest: All we needed was trees throwing apples. Great work, artfully composed, with a great soundtrack. I'd love to sit in that cabin on a freezing day, with my feet resting on a camping stove, a hot toddy, my pipe, and a sunset view. We've added the Morgan Family to our list of things to be grateful for.
