Steve and Cindy of Goodgame Bees & Homestead paid us a visit while they were traveling on business through south Mississippi. They are beekeepers from the north end of Mississippi and are also a newer beekeeping and homesteading channel on KZfaq. Here is the link to their channel. Go check them out. / @k5ata
This video is of an impromptu condition inspection visit to one of our dad's honey bee yards. My skinny look-alike is my brother Tommy who joined Steve and I as we did a little apiary maintenance. Tommy answers the question here "are we abandoning mini nucs" as Steve gets to the bottom of it during his investigation. We had a very nice visit and look forward to more visits in the future.
We do still have mini nucs and will likely return to them at a later date as we grow in beekeeping and queen rearing. Currently we are using three frame deep mating nucs instead.
Dad is out of the picture for the time being due to surgeries and infection. He may show up in some videos that were recorded prior to his most recent shoulder replacement surgery. We will update everyone on his condition soon.
The music in this video is from the KZfaq library

Eric's Everything That is what is leftover from the blue shop towels that they use to treat with oxalic acid. Tommy (DirtRooster's brother) treats. Randy does not, if I recall correctly.

I want to thank you so much for all the information you give us in your Videos. I've been watching your videos for about a year now, and I have to say that I adore your family your brother, your dad, your wife, your kids. I feel like I know all of them. But the greatest thing that's happened as a result of watching your videos, I used to have colonies that were brought in for the farm across the street. Well they would come over to my house because I had a sprinkler system and they would poop on my windows poop on my outdoor furniture. And I was really frustrated with that and didn't like them. But now two weeks ago I'm out picking blackberries and a little honeybee comes in to pollinate a flower and I found myself talking to her and getting out of her way and telling her little lady I love you and I'm grateful for all the hard work you do. What a change in attitude, and all because of your videos and Mr. Ed's videos so thank you very very much for educating me, entertaining me, and giving me a family to check in on.

I stopped using mini nucs when I realized they were slow to fill our 10 frames once we put them in. Not sure if you experienced this but they wouldn't build out, but they would build up if we gave them the extra room. Once we stopped the nuc boxes we gave them a full 10 frame deep and they grew so much faster!
@628DirtRooster
@628DirtRooster 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, going to a three or five frame first is ideal and feed them like there's no tomorrow. Of course they're only meant for mating queens but you get busy or run out of equipment and next thing you know they are colony starters instead or queen mating apparatuses.

I’m terrified of flying insects that can sting/bite and can’t stand moths. They literally give me chills. But I’ve been watching your videos to try and help me learn about bees and get use to the sight and sound of them. Seeing you just knocking them off that kid and walking around truly amazes me. It’s just astounding. I know honey bees are probably more docile than like wasps and “killer bees” and yellow jackets, etc. but it still helps calm me down lol. So thanks!

Great video, thanks love! I really enjoy your brother's insight and inclusion in your videos, he has lots of knowledge and trainsmits it really well. I'm really sorry to hear about your Dad, mine went through one successful hip replacement and two more on the other side that went badly wrong, they left him crippled for the last decade of his life. Most of the time hip, knee and shoulder replacements go well these days, but some people just have bad luck. I can imagine your Dad is in pain, as well as not able to do much for himself right now, I have a lot of sympathy for him. Please tell him he's in our thoughts, I'm sure he can kick this infection in the arse, he strikes me as that type of determined character! Tell Tommy he should have been a school teacher, he's really good at communicating on camera. As for yourself, I can you're working too hard and not getting enough sleep. I know after Dad had surgeries he and Mum needed so much more help (Dad was my Mum's carer believe it or not, she's been retired through ill-health for over 15 years), that you'll all be run off your feet. Just take care of yourself, although I bet your lady wife frets enough about you that there is no point me doing it!
@628DirtRooster

We are working hard and losing a little sleep. Dad is determined as you've surmised. He had mom drive him to a bee club meeting last night and he can barely walk on top of only having one arm he can use. Still got a long way to go. Tommy has always been a good communicator. I'm surprised he doesn't have his own channel.

I don't use inner covers but I also use migratory covers with screened vents. There's about 1.5" of space above the frames and a strong colony will fill that space with burr comb during a nectar flow if you're not adding supers quick enough, but that doesn't happen all that often for me.

Depends how much brood and if it's on plastic foundation. If you're running wax base or starter strips with no foundation you can cut around the brood. If you have plastic foundation and more than just a very few brood cells you typically leave it in the hive.

Why quit using inner covers? Here in east central Illinois we have occasional small hive beetle (SHB) problems. Once I took every inner cover off every hive my SHB problems became zero. Then I noticed the UoG bee videos. They don't use traditional inner covers but use a piece of canvas cut to size. The traditional inner cover has a lot of "un-patrolled" space where SHB congregate.

Lots of honey this year. Two brood boxes , second one almost full of honey. But I lost both queens . I replaced one from a Cali breeder and she seems to be doing fine. My nuke has no sign of any brood so am getting one for them. Unusual to lose 2 queens from 2 new hives? They do have room for brood so I don't think it was honey bound..

Rooster in all my watching of your's and Mr. Ed's videos, I have never heard of clipping a queen's wings like that. Couldn't that be considered as damage to the queen and cause the girls to supersede her? At a minimum could this practice cause her stress? Could clipping the wings like this cause her cut wings to catch on the cell wall as she lowers her abdomen down into the cell causing eggs not to be placed properly at the bottom of the cell?

Love all your videos,been learning a lot. Question,you raise queens to swap out in your hives? What about raising queens to build hive numbers? What would you suggest? I'm thinking it would be different. Thanks man👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

They can smell and they can see very well. They have five eyes and they navigate by the sun. They can also correct for movement when the sun changes position in the sky while they are out foraging.

Depends on a few things. If you want what's in the relocated box to stay with that box them you have to move them away or all older bees return to the original location.

I noticed on some of the closeups of the cells (like at 14:35 ), there are some bees that have their heads stuck in a cell, and appear to not be moving. Are these bees doing that for a reason? Are they dead? Sorry if this is a silly question.

Hey Rooster, a question (which you have probably been asked many times), what got you into beekeeping and hive maintenance, is it something you've always done or got into in recent years? Just curious.

At the end of the video, it looks like most of your colonies have migratory covers on them. Is there enough ventilation with migratory covers sealing off the top, or are there some upper entrances that aren't visible in the video?

Hope your Dad is doing better. Watched him in an old video from 2014. He has his own brand of honey called "Stinger Juice?" Does he still make it? I also heard you use your honey for mead. You make it yourself or sell your honey to a local distiller? Sorry for all the questions, but as I continue to binge watch, there will probably be more.

Why does the Queen have to fly outside the hive to mate?
@628DirtRooster

The mate in the air. Kind of like eagles but without the death plunge and with bees the male dies instantly upon mating.

You dont need mini Nucs, you have a Bird Hive! Are there any issues with merging hives like that? I always wondered if the bees from the 2 hives would become hostile to each-other or something? Also the super cuts comment made me imagine the bees with Elvis quiffs! XD

I have a bee hive in a wall to remove and I'm just getting started in beekeeping and can't afford a nuc but don't want to kill the bees. Any suggestions for cheap or free bee keeping supplies?
@reneebrown5598
@reneebrown5598 7 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey Murdock build something. I would think that would be the cheapest was to expand your hives. I'm building two langstroth long hives this winter for a spring start of bees on my property. I've priced alot of equipment and that's the cheapest way to start my hives. And you control all the bells and whistles you want on/in your hive

Lolita's Garden that's a idea but there are virtually no bee keepers in oakland. And the worst part is most of the people around here that I found to do beehive removal's all kill the hive and leave the honey and stuff behind in the wall. That's why I want to get into hive removals without killing the bees.
