I had absolutely no idea how hard harvesting bees could be. The fact you make every effort to let the bees live truly adds another round of applause for your efforts as we need the bees! I am concerned about your welfare getting stung as often as you do. Take care! We care!

The first cutout I ever did I agreed to do it for the cost of fuel (100 mile drive each way), and they complained about that. I raised my rates to what I think is fair and have never had a complaint since, I bring a spare suit along for the homeowner to wear and watch if they are interested, usually only takes about 2 minutes for them to agree it is worth every penny to have someone else to remove them.

@@Goldenhawk583 Carpenter bee females bore tunnels into wood to pack with pollen and eggs. I've had the little pests bore finger long tunnels into beams. Bigger tunnels can branch and I've seen samples of damaged beams with 4-5 finger long branches. As you can imagine, a beam with big bores cut into it isn't as strong as one that hasn't been eaten. Long term, other pests can nest in the bores, like termites...

I am going to go out on a limb and say most swarms are worth just s touch more than 30 to 50 dollars. A small nuk will run 125 or better.
@michaelc.30134 жыл бұрын
@@joerowland607 When you buy a nuc, the main expense is the box the bees are housed in. A brood box with a top and bottom, without bees, is about 200$.
@joerowland6074 жыл бұрын
@@michaelc.3013 um um. I really think not. A fool and his money soon go separate ways. My father was a master carpenter to the same level as Bob Villa. There is absolutely no way I would pay that, it will not happen. I know how to use wood tools. I have less than 35.00 dollars in my hive box and bees. Swarm traps provide free bees. And today I went and did a cut out. Free bees. And lately I know of a cabinet shop that produces 24 inch drop of 1x12 lumber. As long as that material is available my boxes will be free too.
@michaelc.30134 жыл бұрын
@@joerowland607 I can't argue with you about that. I'm not a master carpenter and don't know anybody giving away lumber. I can buy the materials and put together a box for alot less as well, but for those people who don't have the tools, the time or the know how to do so, you can expect to pay a pretty penny for something preassembled. The same people buying a nuc for 125$ are likely buying preassembled boxes as well. I wasn't trying to be disrespectful.

Incredibly hard work in that humidity. No bee suit? I had a swarm make a hive in my front yard water use meter box a couple summers ago. There was only one keeper that could get the bees and he was out of state at the time. Out here, beekeepers do it for a hobby like my guy did, or they have crews that hit the farms around here to set up those box hives in the fields. The hobbyists do not charge, as far as I know. The bees set up their hive on a Sunday, and on Friday when the keeper came out, the hive itself was about the size of a standard football. I watched the whole process from when the bees swarmed into the yard, cycloned into the water meter box, and again I watched the bee keeper remove the bees and hive. He told me that he was going to relocate them someplace where they can do their thing without getting bothered. It was really fascinating to me.
