The Phase One XF is the most high-end camera system you can buy. I recently had a chance to use this setup with the IQ3 monochrome back. I was told this back is the first one in the US so I was pretty excited.
This camera setup is a game changer. The Phase One IQ3 Monochrome back is one of the most exciting things to happen in camera design in the age of digital photography. The sensor weighs in at a cool 101 Megapixels and its designed to capture light past the visual spectrum. When you understand how to shape this using filters you have one of the most advanced, digital monochrome cameras ever made. The results are stunning.
Special Thanks to Digital Transitions for loaning me the camera and to Rod Clark who makes the best filter system on the market for setting it all up! Check them out here:

Not quite. I bought a Phase One digital back used recently. In 12 years my P25 mfdb for my Hasselblad dropped in price from $36,000 to just under $3,000, so a drop of about 12x or down to 8% of its original new cost. So you are right, with new technology the costs of these tools will drop dramatically. But they probably won’t drop to $1k in 10 years...

In 10 years, top rated artists who use such tools, will have earned premium wages, way more than enough to fund then current couple of hundreds of megapixels, true 3d cameras, and fools like you, will be wondering, why these nerds, keep staying at the forefront of the game. So, selling their used ones to you for 3,000 dollars will be a steal for themsake, not for yours.

Having been in the game since early 70's.. I can honestly say... ' I don't get it'. I don't get any part of this. 60K on a B & W only hobby camera? Use of filters to shoot humans? I get the mystic of medium format. But, I just don't get this digital back whatsoever. For comparable results, there are much affordable and sensible options out there. I'm happy you had a good time with it... But I still don't get it.

I hope you are correct and that some of this technology, specifically the replaceable back, becomes an option by other manufacturers. I'd love to be able to swap out a high megapixel back for a low light option, monochrome or infrared back. The extended dynamic range of the Phase One camera is the most intriguing feature to me, more mp's for the size I print isn't too important. Thanks for the review Ted and also thanks to Digital Transitions!

Great Review, thanks. Sadly the comments show that most people don't get what this is about. It's not about better photographs, it's about camera built technology which will help people in their buissnesses to shoot high pixel, low noise photographs. It does not make your photos any better, it only qualifies them to get blown up to a high extend. For people who don't need it it's of course wasted money. It's intended for professionals with special needs. Thats all. The price tag also impies exactly that very clearly.

Hi Ted. With over 700 comments I doubt you will read this, but in any case I wanted to thank you for spending time on the Phase One camera. Although few of us can afford a camera like this I think it's extremely helpful that companies like PhaseOne produce hardware and software of this level that “push the envelope” and the entire industry forward. Interfaces like the one you demonstrated and the interface of the Leica TL2 actually do make a difference in the longterm in influencing the industry in very positive ways. More intuitive interfaces *do* affect the way we create images, the art of photography, and how we craft images. Thank again for your channel. I love your Artist Series.

Ted, thank you for this review! I was very curious to hear from you about this camera, and specifically this back. I would highly recommend for you to try the Leica Monochrom Typ 246. It’s not medium format, but it’s compact and it produces best digital black-and-whites (beside this back). I have several digital systems, including Leica M10, mirrorless, and DSLR. Also, I shoot a lot of medium format film, mostly black-and-white. I was absolutely blown away with images from that camera and I actually regret trying this camera (I had it for extensive period of time)!

Beautiful images, if I win the lottery I'm buying that camera. I've been using their Capture One software for about 7-years on my meager Sony A300 & A77 photos. That software is incredible as far what you can do to either save an almost lost image or to make an ok image into something you can be proud of, not to mention what you can do with your good photos. My niece works for a portrait photography studio that owns a Phase One color back they have on a Hasselblad camera and the close up portraits show the most natural skin tone graduations I've ever seen in a photograph.

This camera is amazing! Its sensors like these that get me interested in shooting digital again. Similar (not to the extreme obviously) is the Leica Monochrom. I would love to get my hands on one to shoot with it and see if it would sell me on the idea of switching from film to digital again. The tonal range and ability of the sensor is just gorgeous. Anyways, thanks for the great content. This was a enjoyable and thorough breakdown of an amazing camera!

A little history here. Phase One has been making state of the art digital backs which at that time were mounted on Hasselblaad cameras since the very start of the digital revolution. Capture one, their softwear has been around with the best raw algorithym all that time. It was serving Phase One users long before Lightroom appeared, years actually, and always was far superior to Photoshops raw generator. When shooting Raw images you are seeing the images that come off the sensor. Time is always required to use the skills of a photographer and a person who has been patient enough with the learning curve to understand what is happening with the image and how to use the tools to get to a beautiful glowing image. This is not for the guy shooting automatic to .jpg. No canon in the 5 series can make an image that compares to the final images that come out of Phase One digital backs. The technical specs of these instruments clearly shows this. Comparing an $800 camera to a 35K back with zeiss lenses is an exercise in the ridiculous.

The Sigma sdQ has a removable IR cut filter and a Foveon sensor (no bayer filter) to create black and white + IR images very much like in this video, it can also shoot in color too if you wish with it's three layer sensor and costs as little as £700. Sure it's not 100mp, can't shoot high iso and missing the dynamic range of the Phase One but it's much cheaper, has great f1.8 zooms and has enough detail for very large prints. Might be worth checking out if the BW with IR sensitivity was one of the things you loved plus its much easier on the wallet. Just saying :)

Museums can now produce 100mp reproductions of civil war daguerreotypes! What happens to the daguerreotypes of the old masters? Architectural photography? What about the building itself speaking for you rather than photo enhancement? Vanity on top of vanity- that is the whole story here. What was the last one he mentioned? Oh yeah, fashion! The perfect camera for people whose ambitions and self importance extend far beyond anything vaguely resembling practicality or even basic sense. Architects!

If you have ever done actual B&W darkroom work with ISO 100 Monochrome film, (from taking photo's to developing to printing) and experienced the "richness" and depth of the printed photo's, all of this Phase One's image quality makes sense and is absolutely amazing......especially when you have taken photos with monochrome film in low light with objects in bright and high contrast. This makes me long again for that lost art......that is why this costs so much....because it gives you now instant gratification and results...

50k to shoot black & white! I love black & white photography. But those sensors that only shoot b&w, to be honest, that doesn't do anything for me. Yes it's a little different from the sensors that have the bayer filter, but then again you can properly convert a photo to b&w by using the gray gamma 2.2. No one will distinguish the difference between a b&w sensor and a bayer sensor from a b&w photo. b&w photography relies greatly from post processing, you can create the most stunning b&w photo with a "normal" camera and skills in post processing. it's all about the photographer, not if a sensor shoots only b&w or not. A 63k camera means nothing in the fine art world.

Why even bother with a Leica, another overpriced camera system. Buy yourself a box brownie and get exactly the same pic with b&w film. Well, that's taking it to an extreme, but you'll see my point. A good roll of b&w film in any film camera will do well, if the photographer knows his/her stuff. And, has a little bit of luck go their way. But, this camera will have its uses, in the right context. People here are saying "they don't get it", etc. They're not meant to. This camera is not even meant for them and they'll most likely never even get the chance to use anything like it. However, it's fun to know that they exist. I'm an astronomer and I know the advantages of using a mono chip with no bayer layer on the pixels. I would love to have a 101MP chip to use, though, I can get by happily with much smaller chips. Going into the advantages of mono v colour chips would take up far too much space here, so I won't do so. But, if I had the opportunity to use/have one I would take it.

Aside from world class resolution and dynamic range of that camera, nearly any camera with the UV/IR cut filter removed can take similar full-spectrum images. I had a 5Dmk2 converted years ago and see similar outcomes when shooting in B/W. With the right stack of UV pass filters, you can get tintype-like portraits.

to Hades with that....I know peeps inside Fujifilm, and the GFX II will drop in 2 years with the 100MP sensor for somewhere in the $7800+ range. by the math, thats about $55,000 CHEAPER ...for a better camera no less. not Monochrome however.

+Theoria Apophasis well that was one of my points in the video. This IS the tech that will trickle down to other cameras in the coming years. If there’s a market I would love to see Fujifilm do an achromatic or even one day a trichromatic. I only had this camera for about 12 hours to shoot on, get b roll etc... was fast but amazing.

I'm really hoping we can create a demand for true monochrome sensors. The lack of a color filter, has a good chance of negating any benefits gained by having those large medium format photo-sites in my opinion. As for a large photo site/ monochrome sensor, i'd love to see some detailed comparisons compared with more standard pixel pitch monochrome sensors. I'm really curious to see how this part of the tech will evolve since we've seemed to hit point in research that negates a large amount of the benefits gained from having larger photo sites.

Believe it or not, I just got a 1DXII for the purpose of experimenting with the larger photo sites compared to my 5DIV. It does seem to make a difference in tonality in any situation where I'm not using strobes or shooting in the brightest daylight, even at base iso.

Also what you can do, and i did to my canon 6D is convert to full spectrum, basically they remove the IR filter so you can capture all those wave lengths, its tricky as you need various filters if capturing color but for monochrome, is amazing.

Not sure why lots of megapixels and high dynamic range can make a camera cost so much more than its competitors. Supersampling has diminishing returns after like 15mega pixels and if you say that extra MP is for printing, you have got to be kidding me. Large dpi usages on large printing... no-one is going to get up close to see those details on a 20' by 90' mural , Sharpness is heavily related to glass quality after all techniques are all said and done, and you can get full range of light with simple multi exposure HDR techniques... overpriced plastic and metal to get tech weenies all hot and horny. Quality review of the camera though, Cheers.

Having used and owned multiple 8x10 and 4x5 cameras for years, It would be fun to see you on assignment in some far flung corner of the world stuggling with loading 8x10 film backs in a dark bag, and trying to capture a moment that is fleeting on this format. It can be done, I know, I did it. But man it requires a completely different paradymn. It is obvious you have not worked with large format or you would not say that.

Though admittedly I have never shot 8x10, A chamonix 4x5 is my current camera of choice. Of course its not suited for all applications (time sensitive assignments of action in some remote location...), and you definitely have to approach a shot with a different mind set. But I'd take the results of a 4x5 or 8x10 negative over whatever digital sensor every time :) But then again I just enjoy film so thats me.

You may just have to trust me (as someone who has used both cameras) but I can assure you they're actually not comparable in terms of "image quality". It's not "almost the same" unless you think a house cat and a fully grown tiger roaming the savannah are "almost the same". Yes you can make good photos with both but if you need a 2m print that someone will stand in front of I know which one I'll use. Looked at on an phone screen the difference will be harder to see but if examined even a little, believe me there is a big difference in all sorts of aspects. Not many people need this camera though and at the end of the day the person holding the camera is of far greater importance.

Maybe, but the specs for the two cameras are quite divergent. The Fuji is a 14 bit camera, the Lighphase is 16 bit. That translates into thousands of colors the Lightphase can render that the Fuji cannot. The Lightphase has 15 stops of dynamic range, the Fuji has 14. Now the Fuji is a fantastic piece of technology in its own right and it is not cheap at nearly 7 grand, however in the world of high end commercial photography, shooters are using digital backs. You will see them in use on nearly all the major shooters going. They know it sets them apart, both in appearance and quality of the images, and they are able to command prices commensurate with that. For those who demand uncompromising quality to their images, the choice is clear, although the DSLR's are getting better every day.

No difference between 14 bit and 16 bit. H1d-50c is 16 bit and has same sensor with GFX50s but GFX50 s is 14 bit. Trust me GFX has better image quality and iso performance. Fuji is 6500 usd and it is very cheap for medium format camera. GFX dynamic range is so amazing and there will be new version upcoming 100mp back illuminated sensor for Fujifilm made by Sony.. NO NEED FOR THAT STUPID MONEY!
@alectrondorfman1057
@alectrondorfman1057 6 жыл бұрын
GhKan, 14 bit shows 16,000 tones, 16 bit 65,535 tones. Due some editing on your 14 bit files and you will see what happens to the histogram. Stuff is dropping out. You have a lot of reserve on the 16 bit. You cannot see the difference when looking at these images on a computer screen, except perhaps at 100 percent. But blow these up to eight feet for a show, and the reason you pay big money for these cameras becomes obvious. Of course the camera in question is for a very specific photographer, who needs the ultimate in black and white images. They won't sell many of them, hence the astronomical price.

@the art of photography the reason why the pixels on this camera are "deeper" is because the way the ccd in the camera operates. it is a very very large megapixel camera. the reason why there is less noise in the darker images is specifically because the processor omits color all together. it uses the total amount of photons captured in each pixel to make an approximate image that uses an order of magnitude less noise because the ccd doesn't care about about color correction. its truly remarkable. i'm an applied physicist, thought id add my 2 cents.

I have been following Phase One for years. While there is a market for this kind of camera no one I know will ever own one. We get by with traditional and digital processes quite nicely for a fraction of the cost of a Phase One. One of our locals dedicated his life to 11x14 and he produces stunning images. With film. Imagine that. Film. Of course he is a serious master of the craft and god bless him for his dedication. The rest of us run with a d800e (or other) which is likely the last camera I will ever need to purchase.
