In this video I tear down a huge 59kg air conditioning scroll compressor from an 8 horsepower air conditioner.
It's a comedy of errors as I try and figure out what to do next.
I'd recommend that you use this video as a guide of what not to do when trying to reclaim scrap burnt copper. :-)

Welcome to the Bondi Scrapper Channel.
Please click the thumbs up, subscribe to my channel and leave a comment if you wish.
This channel is my recycling journey from kerbside collections and dumpster diving and ending at the scrap metal dealer for a cash pay-out.
I love walking the streets (especially with my 17yo Maltese Terrier, Elliot) and finding recyclable waste, taking it back to my small workshop (The Cage) and pulling it apart, saving it from landfill and feeding it back into the manufacturing stream via the scrap metal dealer.
My favourite metals are brass, copper and aluminium. I also do a lot of steel which is an inevitable bi-product of scrapping.
When I'm not scrapping, my other hobbies are growing vegetables, compost worms and Australian native stingless bees.
I also like fixing cars and doing handyman work.
Thanks for watching.

The first one is always the slowest, but good work, you worked it out. I usually mount the stator a bit higher on some chocks of wood so that you can just use gravity, a hammer and a long screw with a flat end to tap the windings out all the way and not have to lever them out with a screwdriver or a pinch bar. I don't bother cutting open compressors or upright fan motors, but pump motors and winch motors are usually much better because you can just undo the casing screws and take the motor out, and not have to muck around with all the heavy steel, anchoring bolts and welding that compressors have protecting the motor.

I would have tore into that compressor as soon as I got it for the copper. It takes me 10 to 15 minutes to take a compressor apart. On my first one it took ages. Now I have taken over 100 apart. I live in the UK we don't get thst much for compressors so it's best to cut them open.

Welcome! Definitely I need practice. I can be a lazy git and tend to do the quick easy jobs first as I get bored with the bigger projects. The scrap price yesterday was 95c/kg which is 22p/lb. How does that compare with your price?
@iffy9776
@iffy9776 2 жыл бұрын
@@bondiscrapper1781 I think price are very similar because metal is traded on the world market. Last month. I got £6.35 per kg for bare bright wire. £5.25 for num 2 copper wire. House hold flex, cat 5 wire normal electric wire not stripped £1.89 per kg. Copper 5.65 per kg .brass 3.50 perkg. Aluminium comes all under one price 90p per kg . Stainless 1.20 perkg. I think motors compressors all go for 30 to 50 pence per kg. Shred is 20 ppkg.

I was surprised the you only got 3.7 kg if copper from a compressor weighing 70kg..Normally a compressor this big has 5 kg at least.

1:14 - 59 kilos. At $$ 1.10 per kilo. Comes to $ 64.90. Round it down to $ 60.00 for the sake of conservative calculation. Would have got $ 60.00 for it as is. So, round up the burnt copper to $ 40.00, and and an officially established $ 8.10 return on the steel [ 31.10 ], for an actual return of, say, $ 48.10. As against a potential return of at least $ 60.00. What you have achieved is to take at least $ 10.00 out of the economy. By your labors you have tightened the economy by $ 10.00. You have added $ 10.00 to the productivity of the economy.

@@bondiscrapper1781 Actually, one can be more exact than my above calculation, and circumvent any other residual material to do with the item such as any brass appendage and so forth, just by adding the steel weight to the burnt copper weight, 57+ kilos, at a rounded down $ 1.00 per kilo for compressor weight, and its a conservative $ 57.00. Thus a very conservative $ 8.90 pruning, but probably $ 10.00+. But I think it definitely still less than $ 20.00. But whatever you pruned from the value is processessing work you did for for other interests further along the stream.
