It used to happen to me and I know it happens to others. As a new Tractor Owner, there is lots to learn about how the tractor operates. I'll show you how I learned to avoid engine stalling and clogged chutes. Let's warm up my Kubota LX2610 compact tractor and my Kubota front mount LX2980 snow blower and head out into my driveway. I hope this is helpful. Cheers!

Another way to explain it is, when Momma tries to feed her one-year-old oatmeal, faster than the one year old is willing to take it, oatmeal blows every which way. The little one-year-old can only take so much and if you try to shove in more..... lookout!

Another tip. If your drive is not frozen and the blade keeps digging in you can turn the blade around backwards so it doesn't dig into the gravel.

Good tips for beginners there! So easy to floor it and stall the tractor when you're not used to listening to engine load. One second you're speeding along fine, then you hit rotten snow at a section you barely even touch and engines goes "BWAAAOOOW" 😂 And in my first year the driveway wouldn't freeze either, the solution I found was to not lower the blower all the way, cars could still get through, and packed the snow real good. Of course, I use inverted blower, a raised front blower wont work for you in corners. Maybe ebay has some taller shoes to get for that blower? Or perhaps you could get another pair of shoes from Kubota, then have guy modify them with an additional 2" of height? ☺

Thanks for the video, I have a 24 inch snow blower and a gravel driveway. To prevent the skids from digging into the driveway, I made up a pair of skis from some quarter inch flat stock that I got from the hardware store and welded them to the skids. They're four or five inches longer than the skids front and back and about an inch wider than the skids. Whenever I use the blower I always set it about an inch and a half high on the driveway, this keeps me from picking up rocks and I finish with my plow blade. I figure that if I have to use the blade to finish, than there is no reason to be trying to get clean on the first pass.

Yes you're right about that but that's for all tractors and lawn tractors to it does the same thing you have to go slow with all of them including the side-by-side and if you don't it's either got the motor down or pop the belt off or if like you said it breaks to shear pin

I know with my walk behind snowblower i could watch the snow being thrown out of the chute also for signs of it bogging down. The engine may sound like its struggling and when that happens you can instantly see snow starting to decrease in the distance it is being thrown. That was my indicator to let off on the wheels and let the auger catch up. I must say though i thoroughly enjoyed your videos. My family has a farm an hour from the city and its like your cabin... Isolated kinda. Love the outdoors but in winter you have to be smart and stay safe. Keep up the awesome videos i love watching them. ❤

Hey Gord, another tip I discovered on my L4060 with front blower is to release the bar on the back of the brake pedal so you can operate the left and right brakes individually. This improves the steering tremendously as otherwise the front blower wants to dig into the snow bank and makes steering difficult.

Gord, another great episode. And incredibly helpful and timely as it turns out. I was plowing and blowing today, but mostly plowing. At one point, I moved backwards into a pile to blow to blow it away, and - not much happened. I'm thinking hmmm, the snow is very heavy maybe I'm just not going to be able to move much that way. I continued on my way plowing. Then, a little later, I watch this video and hear your commentary on the shear bolt. I'm thinking - absolutely what I was seeing. The friction of the contact spins the auger a little and you get a little snow shooting through, just like you described. Sure enough - I went out to my machine and discovered my first ever broken shear bolt - on any of the equipment I own. Easy change change and back in business. Great timing on this and great information - thank you!

another thing I found that works good is to put rubber wipers on the inside of the drum.This will help Get most of the snow out of the machine as it takes it in. It will also prevent the machine from icing up When you get a lot of wet snow You will notice that it also makes the machine throw snow a lot further. attached the wipers with three or four bolts. Carry a can of cooking pam on the tractor to the lubricate the drum on startup. Your machine should be 3/4 of an inch to an inch off the surface of the ground for a gravel driveway. factory measurements are only a guideline, not gospel. The rubber wipers may save you some horsepower because it helps get rid of the snow sooner. A lot of people don't believe that this works but I've tried it on smaller machines and you wouldn't believe the difference.

Another fine job. Thanks Gord. I couldn't agree with you more about several items you mentioned. Blowing snow is something you have to get the 'feel' for. Quite a few variables, as you mention and each snow fall is different; depth & moisture content - and each requires different tractor speeds. And this winter is a first in that the ground simply isn't freezing like it normally does here in north Maryland. I can tell you why this is ... I just got a 2nd tractor, snowblower setup ;-) If I may add, with respect to the chute freezing/clogging up ... this usually happens to me when I'm blowing a small coating of snow/slush mixture and reaching the end of a pass. I think it's because there is so much water content, because it's a 'slushy' mixture, that it begins to freeze in the chute. To help mitigate clogging, I've learned to ensure I'm taking as large a 'bite' (in slushy snow mixtures) without overworking the engine and at the end of a pass to stop forward motion quickly, so I'm not just pushing low amounts of snow/slush. It's kind of hard to explain and hope it made sense. Thank again Gord! Always love watching your videos!
@GPOutdoors

Good day David! Thanks kindly. LOL! Yup, thats probably why .:)) Thanks for sharing your advice - the slushy stuff can pose a challenge for sure. Hope we both get a little more practice with some good snowfalls soon!

I had the same setup as you on a 27 hp Kioti. I took the front mount blower off 5 years ago, now I plow with my bucket and the back blade. With the blower on the front, you lose the ability to get yourself out if you get stuck. Also the transfer case on the blower weighs a ton and working by myself at 76 years of age, it isn't fun mounting it.

Good video. I have a B2650 with the front mount B2782B blower and it loves dry snow. Wet stuff not so much. Two more thoughts - 1. I use the cruise control to make sure I don’t push the tractor too hard/get impatient under these conditions. 2. I keep my deflector at it’s most upright position to prevent excessive snow flow resistance. Putting it down will result in almost instant clogs. Like other viewers state, after the first pass a smaller bite may be in order to increase travel speeds. Sometimes I’ll plow to the edges and then use the blower to keep things opened up fully. Keep up the good work!

Great video Gord. Thanks. 2 things I learned about my snowblower, keep an eye on the drive chain tension. There should be a small amount of play in it but not much. An overly tight chain will cause early wear or busted parts. The other thing is that spraying in inside of the chute with cooking spray does really help, especially when the snow is wet and heavy. The ground still isn’t very frozen here either.

Good morning Gord.. Your blower is different then mine.. I have two shear bolts one on each side of the auger and one on the impeller.. Wendell is a wealth of knowledge.. He and I have had a few discussions about stuff … I have asked him about a tractor I have (1966 International 544) he says it’s newer then when he has worked on.. hahahaha He likes the old stuff.. I ran into a issue just yesterday.. I was blowing snow and stopped to adjust the shoot up a bit and as soon as my ass left the seat the tractor shut off.. I didn’t really think much until I got back in and turned the key and nothing.. I knew it had to be a safety switch somewhere.. I tried everything for about 10 minutes.. Then I rocked the foot pedal back and forth and guess what.. started right up.. Some how it was stuck in either forward or reverse just a little and it tripped the safety.. Lesson learned.. I have never been a fan of that type.. I like mine John Deere has two pedals.. left forward right backwards.. Oh well.. I love them both for different reasons.. hahahaha Great Video.. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.. Oh.. Ps You can spin your back blade around and it will pick up lot less gravel when it is not frozen… Just a FYI. Ok I have rambled enough.. As always stay safe and always be kind.. Cheers..

I've been doing our driveway (mix of asphalt and gravel sections) and sidewalks, along with the driveways and sidewalks for 2 neighbors this winter. One is asphalt, the other is some pea gravel type material that really comes up easily. This year I added 2 shoes with rollers to the sides to compliment the factory shoes on the back side of the blower, and set everything to half an inch high. Seems to be doing well, and if the ground is frozen enough (it hasn't been the last 2 times) I'll scrape with the box blade for cleanup. It just hasn't been worth messing with the shoes this year, and I really wanted 4 points of contact for our lawn sections and the neighbor's very soft driveway across the street. I think that helps keep RPMs up too as the scrapper blade was making contact the last couple of years (I thought it was set at 1/2", but I guess the floor where I set the height was not even). I've been able to drive faster this year, without it bogging down, and knock all 3 driveway/connecting sidewalks in around half the time. That last 1/2" has been melting off with how the weather has been this winter.

I have a hopefully quick question for you when you get time. I think you have the perfect set up tractor wise for what I plan to do in the future as well. Still a few years out but starting my "prep" stuff now. I was wondering if you could tell me the full length of your tractor with the snowblower and the blade on the back? (ball park is fine) As I plan to have about the same size tractor/blower/rear blade as you---and I want to make sure I plan out enough space in the garage/pole barn for that set up. Always enjoy your video's! Keep them coming!

Without chains, you’d be spun out for sure with the load the blade was pulling up! I grew up on gravel, so know what it’s like to fight not digging up rocks. Blessed to now have a paved driveway, I never take it for granted. Depending on the snow load, when possible I now like to plow towards the center of the driveway with the ATV, then run the blower down the ridge of snow created in the center & blow it clean. The ping of hitting rocks with the blower sure makes one cringe doesn’t it? Growing up, we called it a rock or stone, till it was like 50 lbs. or more, then called those boulders. Never looked to see what that official change is determined at whether size or weight. Never thought about it till now. 😁😁

Although my 12 hp snowblower is not attached to a tractor one thing I have noticed over the years with this snowblower and previous ones is that the angle of the chute has a direct impact on the velocity of snow exiting. You seem to keep your chute quite low, but I don’t know if this has a great impact on your discharge rate. The other thing I do, from time to time, is either silicone spray or used PAM non stick spray to lube the chute, but again is this real or imagined. Thanks for the video, one day I may get a tractor.

Gord, why did you go to a LX2601 from your B26??? I have a BX2380 but need a bigger tractor. I’m thinking of going to a compact LX2601 but was wondering if a B26 would suffice. I do a lot of loader work with my Bx & find it under rated & not enough lift capacity. I move log’s around & also stones. Hence I would like to buy a grapple. I would appreciate your input. Oh yeah I have a rear mount snow blower & would like a snow pusher mounted to my loader. Thanks

Another issue is the amount of moisture in the snow. The wetter the snow, the more likely it is to plug up. Try using some type of "slick" spray (on the blower box, chute and parts) like cooking spray, silicone, Fluid Film, etc. 6" of wet snow is more difficult than 8"-10" of dry snow. Depending on the terrain, using cruise control can help.

Like anything in this world today...You get what you pay for! I am willing to bet that shear bolts are different...With all the cheap steel from overseas and poor quality control. I honestly doubt that hardware store shear bolts would ever last as long as Kubota or other name brand type shear bolts. Or it could just as easily go the other way. Cheap bolts could be way too hard and actually cause damage to equipment because their testing standards for grade 2 or grade 5 are not up to par! Sounds like a good rabbit hole to go down during the winter months testing or researching this theory! 🤔

The button to the right of your gauge cluster will switch from engine rpm to rear pto speed, if you press it again it will be mid pto speed. You want to maintain 540rpm for rear pto and 2500rpm for mid pto

They say adding a comment helps your KZfaq Algorithm. Here is my contribution. LOL I've noticed on KZfaq that tractor powered snow blow operators tend to drive to fast. If they are worried about speed, they need to remind themselves how long it would take to shovel it. My humorous observation, being an old plow driver, how many blow or plow one direction and them back up to plow the same direction. What a waste of time and fuel. Just turn around at the end and plow going back the other direction.

Wow. Your RPM's really slow down in Mid Range. I have what you used to have (a B2601 with a rear 58" blower). I only use it in Low range and at 2k RPM and it only slows down= if I hit a big snow bank or such. Never have a problem with RPM.

I'm not a fan of the front mounted snowblowers running off the mid 2000RPM mid-PTO's. They are fantastic for not turning around, however unless you're running a 40HP tractor you often run into slow downs like what you experience, Gord. The work can be done as proven many times on here, albeit slow. There is a company called Erskine, that has been in business for quite a few years that make a front mounted snowblower system for tractors 60" and up that run on a subframe from your rear 540 PTO to the front via a gear drop-box. Even with the secondary gearset, the rear PTO provides more efficiant power running at 540 than the mid 2000RPM. Like the front mount blowers though... pricey.

Another good video Gord, but I have a question and I’ve seen you do it before after you back blade and then you use your snowblower you’re blowing over where you back bladed instead of swinging the shoot over to where you didn’t back played, why would you do that?
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors Жыл бұрын
A great question Ken. The driveway turns back and forth throughout the forest. Which means the winds hit me from different directions depending on where I am in the driveway - so I paid extra to get a fully hydraulic chute - so I spin it depending on which way the wind blows ( sounds kind of like Bob Dylan there...:)) and that is why you will see sometimes I am discharging over the bladed side instead of over the side I haven't cleared yet. It is also why sometimes you see that I adjust the deflector to blow the snow low to the ground instead of shooting it high. Hope that helps. :)) Cheers!

Gord after watching your engine temp guage in the video, running this engine at 2 bars while under load is to cold. You should tarp in the front of the engine to get the engine temperature up higher. What I do once I have read the manual to get the proper operating temperature is use a temperature gun on the side of the engine. This will then tell you how many bars you need to be at. Everybody knows a loaded engine is the only way to produce heat. The diesel engine life is extended much longer when it is run at its proper working load. In my equipment rental company we had hundreds of small diesel engines and this was the best way I found to test the engine temp unless it had an actual engine temp digital guage as the tier 3 and tier 4 engines came out with.
