I remember seeing the late Jo Bonnier crash and somersault a T70 Mk 3 at Brands Hatch all the way from the exit of Graham Hill bend to the infield at Clearways. As it went it shed first the bodywork then wheels, suspension and the entire engine and gearbox assembly. Fearing the worst the marshalls were quickly on the scene to see if Jo was still with us. Apart from a few bruises and a small cut on one hand he was ok. His first words to the astounded rescuers was "I feel dizzy!" Eric Broadly designed one tough mutha of a race car!

It seems the engine builder was one Al Bartz, his formula racing engines at that time produced 550 hp. Not to be confused with his Trans Am small blocks. Very complex but interesting story. He previously did 8.5 liter Chevy motors for the same owner, so he was a 'special' client. This was a 'special' motor.

Le moteur américain fonte ajoute un peu au poids par rapport aux moteurs Alu de la concurrence mais c'est une très belle auto qui aujourd'hui rencontre des succès en compétition....👍🏻

I do not recall the Lola T70 in closed cockpit form as being particularly successful. The T70 at Le Mans in 1967, powered by Aston-Martin and driven by one John Surtees lasted for something like one hour before croaking. Of course the open-cockpit version, one of the most beautiful cars of all time IMHO, was more successful, winning the 1966 Can-Am championship.
@bloqk16
@bloqk16 3 жыл бұрын
The one success the T70 Mk 3B had in international endurance racing was at the 1969 Daytona 24 Hours race that was entered by Roger Penske and driven by Mark Donohue and Chuck Parsons. I just re-read the section about this Lola model in Donohue's bio, "The Unfair Advantage," where the Penske team did a lot of development work with the Mk 3B to make it competitive with the Porsche 908s, especially so with the suspension springs, where they got a custom set made from the engineering guys at Chevrolet (sshh! Chevy wasn't suppose to be involved in racing at that time). The Penske team won the Daytona race by outlasting the Porsche and Ford GT40s. The Sebring race the car was competitive with the Porsches and a Ferrari prototype, but dropped out of the race with a fail suspension; in part due to the stresses from the Daytona race and the rough track surface at Sebring. Prior to the race the Penske team had concerns about the suspension arms not looking particularly strong. The Jo Bonnier entered Mk 3B also dropped out of the race with a similar problem. The Penske team couldn't race at Le Mans that year because the car and transporter were stolen; where there wasn't the time and resources to make another effort from scratch. Just as well as the Le Mans effort in '69 could have distracted the Penske team from the Trans Am series that year, which could have cost them the championship with the Chevy Camaro.

It'd be pretty interesting to know what exactly they put in this thing, but 650 HP would be quite a stretch for a normally-aspirated five-liter V8 of the era. That was the level of power the Porsches and Ferraris were achieving with the 917 and 512, and it's why they started to leave the others behind.
@theant9821
@theant9821 6 жыл бұрын
Justin Simms i doubt the naturally aspirated ferrari and porsche had that much, but definitely more than this, but the turbo 917/10 and 917/30 had ridiculous power.
@justin4911
@justin4911 6 жыл бұрын
Fair point. 650 HP is just really difficult to do with a carbureted, normally aspirated five liter engine that you expect to last any length of time. I think Penske and Traco Engineering claimed 600HP for the V12 engine in their Ferrari 512M.

A few on here wondering also. New 5 liter components, a 429 Ford Boss originally at about 490 cid in Lolas, or they changed fuel. I wish he had shown the motor. Doubt it was a 427 SOHC (619-645 hp), but 650 seems out of reach of the stock motor. This motor is really free revving and responsive too. I am betting broad range power big block.

@@fredmertz1791 Hi Fred, I did agree of course. There is lots of tricks available today, even fuel changes. Quite a few commented on here. Some guys knowing their stuff, some not. I only built up big blocks to any degree. Of course the European ruling body made them illegal, but I believe it was only for 1970. Check the comments here again. One gentleman knew the car (at one point in time) and said it was a Chevy small block. Again, it's only an opinion of mine, but this car was raced and won in a vintage class. It is supposed to be original. I don't believe so. I do know Chevy's pretty well, and even though you'll see Smoky Yunick poking around the pits in these videos... 650hp? It just ain't so, Joe. ;-) At some point for drag racing, with all the power up high... Maybe. It's no accident they didn't show the motor, even eith covers on, it could be a 3 valve motor. I think the owner wanted to win races and save money. Fords cost serious money. Some original cars did have up to 8.5 liter V8s based on the Chevy or Boss 429. The 427 SOHC Ford was around but not sure if it ever found it's way into these... Fun to speculate! It made between minimum 619 HP up to 645 in another version. I did come across the original owner's car, it may have been a second one... Wait :-) His name was Bonniers, or close to that... Cheers 🍻
@andykerr3803
@andykerr3803 2 жыл бұрын
@@fredmertz1791 So, I checked out Jo Bonniers car in 68. It did have an 8.5 liter Chevy that he wanted even bigger. His engine builder was one Al Bartz, a real super talented guy. He actually made a 304 cubic inch cross ram motor that GM only put in Canadian Pontiac Firebirds. These were super successful in Trans Am racing. It is a sure thing that if Jo were a client for the big blocks, he would have had him do a small block. His small blocks were also used in Formula racing. He was a specialist in heads, they usually looked like stock cast iron and actually did put out 550 hp back then. There were a lot of connections obviously, to GM, top builders, he worked for Traco and Hillborn, but was considered to have the edge on them. So many brilliant drivers used his motors... He was considered the best kept secret. So certainly 600 hp would not be a stretch, and if they found 'better' fuel and modern upgrades in material and mods... 650 hp might be possible. For sure that motor is an absolute museum piece on its own. Wish they said more. I might contact the present owner as I found the actual machinist that did the porting. I am guessing they focused on "swirl" more than just straight volume flow... Cheers Fred 🍻

375GTB my Dads 302 in 1970 made more than that on the dyno. Mind you it was running close to 13.5:1 but it made close to 520HP with fully ported heads and 900cfm carb turning 8500rpm. But I guess what ever the rule book states your limits for the engine are directly limits your HP.
