All began to change from then onwards as Aravinda De Silva and Arjuna Ranatunga improvised the chase and targetted any Bowler who would come up against. Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Paul Reiffel, Damien Fleming and Mark Waugh were all in the receiving end. Sri Lanka won in a hurry and comfortably with 22 balls to spare thanks to the pair and lifted a major silverware for the first time in the Country's sporting history.

As Sunny mentioned, De Silva had a habit of getting out playing a rash shot when he was looking very good. I remember some sports writers calling him 'Mad Max' In this finals, De Silva concentrated very hard throughout his innings and dont remember if he ever played a false shot

As an Indian school kid in 1996, I hated Srilankan team defeating India. However I hate the Srilankan politics around Anvinda . He is the biggest legend in Srilankan cricket in my lifetime. He didn't get the due respect from Srilankan board of cricket.

Because Australians didn't bowl bouncers and the pitch was dead flat. Otherwise, these players wouldn't have survived even if you asked them to play with cool head. Pitch was dead flat...

I still don't understand why there wasn't even a single Bouncer bowled at Ranatunga!!!!???!!! Ranatunga wouldn't have stayed for more than 3-4 balls if bouncers were bowled to him.. He scored all his runs against spinners and it was purely a "fixed" match. Why didn't the aggressive Aussie Pacers bowl even a single bouncer to Ranatunga???? Not even one bouncer....!! Why only spinners were used against Ranatunga?? If I was the captain, then I would have used fast bowlers and asked them to bowl bouncers to Ranatunga & sent him back in a simple manner.... Definitely he would have got out within 3-4 balls, because he didn't have the capacity to face bouncers... It was "fixed" in order to popularize Cricket in Srilanka. Also watch Kenya vs West Indies match

Aravinda is a great timer of the ball ..i also beleive that aravinda is the best batsman in the world but unfortunately he hasn't got enough time to prove who aravinda de silva is to the world and what he can do but in his little period of time while he was playing, he proved he is the best produce of the cricket in Batting aspect

I agree with you...To add to your list- From 1989 to 92 Martin Crowe was better than him 1992-94 Inzamam was better than him 1994-96 Lara was better than him 1996-97 Arvinda was better than him 1997-99 M Waugh was better than him 1999-2002 Dravid was better than him 2002-04 Ponting was better than him 2004-05 Vaughan was better than him 2005-07 Kallis was better than him 2007-2008 Yousuf was better than him 2008-09 KP was better than him 2009- 10 Sanga was better than him. 2010-11 Amla was better than him 2011-12 Ryan Ten Doeschate was better than him. So he was merely a timeless benchmark for other batsmen who performed for relatively smaller period. Some more distinguishing factors- 1. He was lone performer for India with the bat in that world cup. He scored 527 runs and second Indian could not even cross 180. Whereas Arvinda (448 runs) got support of Jayasuriya ( Man of the tournament), Gurusinha ( 307) and Arjuna ( 241). 2. He was carrying expectations of just 1 billion people each day on the ground. 3. He was also expected to bowl leg break, off break, seam up and win the match by bowling last over to defend 3, 5, 6 runs. After all , he was just an ordinary player with whom at least 10-15 so called legends from each country were compared now and then without any reason.

Sachin was the leading run scorer in 1996 World Cup scoring 500+ runs,He made 65 out of the total 120+ runs in semi finals, Due to weak bowling and lack of runs from other batsmans, Sachin was a lone warrior in losing side several times.

@@ramika6303 Cricket had to be popularized in Srilanka and many corporate companies made huge money by fixing matches. WI-Kenya, India-Srilanka, Finals..... Just see, even the aggressive Aussie bowlers didn't bowl even a Single bouncer to Ranatunga and they just bowled easy balls to him. Even McGrath didn't try anything 🙂 Mark Waugh and Shane Warne bowling full tosses and juicy drive length balls. 😃😃😃😃😃😃 Fast bowlers didn't ball even a Single ball above knee length 😂😂😂😂
