If I'm not mistaken, you have to load these the same amount of passes east and west as west to east or it'll slow down or speed up the rotation of the earth, making days longer or shorter.

I am so appreciative that you posted this video and all related to the 666. Last I saw of these operating in Ohio was in the 80s during the I-480 extension. Too bad machines of this size, and scrapers in general have largely gone by the wayside in favor of Excavators + AT's.... Can't be very many of the 666 left out there, I know there are 660's repowered by Detroit's floating around on big jobs in California however... These, and the big Euclid/Terex's will always live on forever in my memories!! Thanks again for an amazing video, I have watched this multiple times... Cant get enough of those pre-tier emission plumes of black smoke...

I, Operated the Caterpillar 666 Twin Engine scraper for close to 10 years. These 60+ Cubic Yard scrapers could reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour loaded on a smooth haul surface. The 666 was the biggest scraper Caterpillar made. Most all are now retired or scrapped an no longer used.

Wow that's cool. I would love to run one just once. The largest I had was a 621J self loader. Man I thought I was in tall cotton lol.

I was going to ask how big the bowl was. I’ve seen 666’s from a distance on some road work many years ago but from a distance. Never realized just how big they were. A hell of a lot bigger than the self loader I ran for a couple years at 11 yards.

I had an old operator tell me "It's not speed that loads a scraper it's momentum". If you think about it, it was good practice. I always lent an ear to all my teachers. Even the one that taught me to wear a seatbelt on a scraper. Rather than have a control shoved in your rear. Ow! LOL.

Another thing about the 666 is that it was very very fast with those huge tires.

Take two d-9Ls push it full then fully loaded off a 1 1/2 to 1 slope in to the cut. In Beverly Hills right next to the 405 freeway and watch traffic stop!
