This GM 6l80 transmission had a slipping torque converter and lots of torque converter shudder along with metal in transmission pan. We are going to squeeze some more miles out of it with a simple tune change.

Do not follow the 6L80 tuning advice he gives here. EG he can be seen at 29:11 to be completely wiping out the Line pressure to PCA trans calibration table probably because it’s called “Desired Pressure” and he thinks he desires max pressure. Scary he is giving advice. See there is a pressure regulator piston in the valve body that allows a pressure control solenoid to control line pressure fed to all the other PCS for shifting. That regulator is spring loaded, controlling the offset, and the diameters of the regulator pistons control the gain. On some OS versions it uses gain and offset for the TCM to understand the relationship of pump pressure to line pressure. In others it uses the Desired Pressure table to understand the pressure produced by the relationship between the line pressure to PCA pressure, this is called the calibration and can replace the simple offset and gain formula with a table. Yeah, so if you didn’t know that, you shouldn’t be touching it. The people that should be tuning this are TransGo and Sonnex who should have a mechatronics lab with a running 6L80 on the bench. They would need to do so because they manufacture upgraded pressure control regulator kits.

Would you be able to tune an AF33 transmission with this software? I think it's absolutely insane how they "want" the torque converter clutch to slip with the clutch applied ... like, how dumb do they have to be to think that's a good idea? You would never tell a new manual transmission driver to rest their foot slightly on the clutch for any reason, and in fact, people are told not to. Either downshift if it needs more torque or needs to reduce vibration. Sadly my AW-55-50SN has this partial slip feature but it's more primitive and pretty easy to defeat by driving in 4. I just wish I could defeat it altogether.

I bought Shutter Fixx, which I was going to add half. It would be in there if it had a filler tube. Like everyone else, I feel burnt by GM. Any tips to avoid as many issues as possible? 40 RPM is still too much. I would do the reprogram ASAP before the converter gets anymore wear. It should be within about 5 RPM of desired slip. This is just a guess (I'm comparing it to a 4l60E which maintains a very accurate converter slip RPM)

@TechnicianRed
@TechnicianRed 7 ай бұрын
I would recommend a similar tune. Disable TCC in 1-4 and call for 0RPM slip in 5-6 but leave max TCC apply pressure alone. Only crank up max pressure if you absolutely need to. I've heard it's possible for too much TCC apply pressure to apply too much force to the thrust bearings on the crankshaft in the engine but there is no way for me to verify if that is true or not. From my research looking at cutaways of several lockup converters I don't see it as being a problem but I could be wrong.

Couple questions. 2011 Silverado, My tables are quite a bit different on desired pressure by quite a bit. Assuming the values are different based on the X axis numbers at the top of my chart are different. My max pressure tab was the same values as yours and I left that alone based on your comment below. But my TCC desired pressure table, highest value in the lower corner is 42. Guessing I will just duplicate that across the table at 42 being the highest value shown for stock to increase the line pressure. That sound correct to you? I left the max pressure table alone at the 953.

Could you not flush the transmission and put in a new torque converter?
@TechnicianRed
@TechnicianRed 8 ай бұрын
NEVER flush transmissions! That's a good way to loosen up some crud and have it clog a solenoid screen, stick a solenoid, or jam up a spool valve in the valve body. As far as replacing the torque converter only- Don't do it! Torque converters are pretty pricey and the labor is too high to make that option a good route. Besides, these transmissions give LOTS of problems so yeah you might get the torque converter to start working again but it won't be long before the transmission fails and takes the new torque converter out with it. If you need a torque converter on one of these with less than 100K the transmission fluid hasn't been maintained so the trans isn't going to last that much longer. If you need one with a trans that has >100K the trans won't last much longer due to mileage. Either tune it and run it till she blows or replace the whole transmission. Those are your only two good options.

I wouldn't try increasing pump output line pressure as that would cause all of your shifts to be too firm. But I would tune it to command 0RPM of slip in overdrive to keep that TCC from getting unnecessary wear and tear. You probably don't need to increase converter line pressure if your TCC is still good but I doubt it would hurt it.
