6th Gen Camaro Borla S axle-back and sound comparison

I installed a Borla S axle-back exhaust at home which was simple to do. This shows a high speed overview and before/after sound comparison. Type 11924CB (ceramic black).

those pops/crackles get me. was gonna go Atak but now im thinking s type. eventually go headers and delete cats if i want it really loud

I know this is a late reply although just want to say that I am still very happy with my choice of axle back system. I have been thinking of headers although I am not chasing maximum power and I know I will need a tune if headers go in. It currently has the right balance of sensible noise levels when cruising, plus the pops and crackles when I want (3,500rpm is the sweet spot to decelerate from!)

@@markgrovenor389 yep, I went with the S type as well. I’m basically in the same boat actually, the S type has a very nice sound to it on an otherwise stock exhaust, it’s super crisp and clean. I want to go louder and get a full exhaust but I’m still under warranty until some time in 2024, then I can do the full exhaust and tune and remove the soft limiter and stuff.

Sounds great! About how much louder do you suspect it is in person? Is it absolutely noticeable?

Thanks mate, yes it is a noticeable difference with a cold start (I know a phone camera will never give the best sound perspective). The most noticeable difference is under acceleration and the crackles when off the pedal. Both insane and so much better!

Hi Mark, great video. I’m considering the same exhaust but I’m wondering about those crackles and pops during deceleration. I’m not a huge fan of them in my manual, NPP, SS, just wondering how they differ after the muffler switch. I heard a couple in your video and they sounded harsh and violent. Wonder what you think.

Thanks Nathan, you will only get the pops and crackles when going hard, mainly in Sport or Track mode and taking your foot off the throttle over 3500rpm. In tour mode it will still happen if you accelerate hard as it still opens the valves. It isn't offensive and only happens when you want it to (not cruising etc.).

Hi sorry for the late reply. I believe the main compliance issues are emissions and noise. So the headers themselves are not necessarily a problem if they don't have a negative impact on those factors. Some insurance companies may void your policy if it is found that you did not notify them of the modification as they all have a clause that requires you to state any and all mods regardless of what it is. The insurer can then choose to cancel your policy based on the modification being an unsatisfactory risk on either theft or performance. I know it is a long answer but I hope that helps!

Do you have any perspective on the relative difference in volume in stealth mode? I love the sound of the s-type, but i've got headers so its important to me that stealth mode does a good job of quieting down the car for those cold starts in the morning. I don't need it to be as quiet as the factory stealth mode, but it needs to be quieter than factory track mode.

Stealth mode keeps the exhaust valve closed for a cold start, which eliminates the loud crack that everyone loves about these cars! I couldn't give you a db reading but it does help with cold start in particular.

As an American with an 18 SS: 1. Doing this to your Camaro decreases its value. 2. Sounds great...no performance increase whatsoever. 3. The 2019 is the "ugly duckling" already. 4. Having the exhaust sticking out that far betond the valance destroys the intended tapered look of the NPP quad exhaust; which IS a Borla design. I love mods. When they are done to improve the performance or look of the car. This achieves none of those objectives; making the back of the car look like a boy racer trash can muffler equipped Civic. Makes a bunch of noise; but w/o engine tuning produces no horsepower or performance gains. Sorry. I even love your cars color. It is because I love Camaros that I dont see the point. Why didnt you buy a diffuser that would have at least looked nicer? -yank * edited for spelling

Everyone has an opinion and it is fine for them to be different! I wasn't chasing performance gains, just a more unique sound and a unique look. I love the black pipe tips, to go with my black and blue theme. If you have watched all my videos you will see that is the common theme. Replace the ugly duckling front end and have a car that is a little different and (in my opinion) looks better than average! All the best with your car and any mods that you do sir!

@@markgrovenor389 Yes and I was a bit nasty. Sorry about that. The 2019...being a 1 year only design....might be worth the most in 20 year!! I don't hate the front end. Riverside Blue is gorgeous. I had a 2020 V6 in Riverside Blue before I committed to my SS in hot red. I liked the blue a lot more... Again sorry. I see a lot of people make that mod and indeed...your car your choice! The cost of the borla isn't worth the swap! Besides the stock npp exhaust sounds incredible....why mess with it!?

Why mess with the car at all? Most people will be happy with the look, feel and performance of the stock car but I like to tinker! I know it isn't for everyone but a quick online search will show the aftermarket industry is strong. As for the Borla, there were cheaper and more expensive options but this was my choice after comparing the options!

Unfortunately going from stock to stype is like maybe 10% increase in sound and deeper tone. I would rather go with Atak or Corsa NPP to get the $$$ worth.

@@al151 I guess my answer to Noname is because I can! I know it won't have any noticeable performance improvement by itself but it is part of an ongoing process. By all means save your money or choose mods according to your own taste and budget. There are plenty of options.

Yes, there are a number of suppliers of headers for the Camaro in Australia and many people fit them to many cars although it is always questionable when it comes to "legal". Provided they don't impact on emissions or noise they are legal but many just run the risk of being issued a defect notice and fine if ever inspected. Officially, the axle-back system could cause problems if I don't pick the right time and place to let it rip!
