7 1/2 Days in a Road Train - Part 5 of 5

In Part 5, I arrive at Glendambo in South Australia to cross the flooded section of road which caused the detour through New South Wales and Queensland in the first place. Once through the flooded section I make my way towards Adelaide in South Australia before camping for my last night in the truck near Port Augusta.
Part 5 is the final installment of a 5 part series of videos that shows the detour I had to take in February 2022 to transport freight in a triple Road Train from Adelaide in South Australia to Darwin in the Northern Territory.
The Government had granted triple Road Trains supplementary access for 28 days to the Northern Territory via Burra in South Australia through New South Wales coming out at the bottom of Queensland. This was only ever a double Road Train route, triple Road Trains were not normally allowed on these roads.
I have taken my camera gear along with me on this seven and a half day road trip in a triple Road Train to film as much of the floods and journey that I thought might be of some interest to anyone. At the time of leaving Adelaide in South Australia, it was still raining along some of the roads that I would travel on causing road closures along the way. As I moved from State to State, I could only hope that these temporary road closures would not cause me to sit stationary waiting for areas to dry out so that I could continue.

Running north to Darwin or west to Perth from here in Adelaide has to be the best two runs available heading out from Adelaide. Like you, I am now retired from trucks but do miss the trips however.

Thank you Mick for a great series. As I mentioned before, this round trip brought back memories. I am in my mid seventies and have been ill for sometimes and I know that I will not be able to physically do it again in this lifetime. Enjoy your youth as life passes back so quickly and only leave good memories if we get out there and create these memories

Hey Mick....absolutely love your videos, great commentary, beautiful scenery, can't believe how green it is up north now, hope you don't start getting the dreaded "white line fever"...you done a lot of k's in this 5 video series.....a lot of water around Glendambo as well as a lot of other places in the river system... I can't believe the usually very dry and arid Hay Plains is now under water, Ive driven that road many a time over the years and its always been so dry through there... I'm a permanent caravaner now...have been for the last 6 years...who knows maybe one day down the track I will bump in to you and Sally in my travels....stay safe Mike, and keep up the good work :)

Thanks for your kind comments, it is a bit hard to believe that even the Hay Plains can be covered with water like it it now. Glad you like the videos, no white line fever for me just have to hang in there with it all until the end of the financial year and then it is retirement. You never know, like you say we may bump into each other one day.

Those flood shots were amazing around Glendambo. It never ceases to amaze me just how much of our country gets cut off all because of one tiny stretch of bitumen. I send freight all over Australia and customers were complaining to me why their stuff was late. They just don't understand how one major highway cut off for even just a few metres can bring our country to a grinding halt. Great videos. Cheers

Back in 2002 the last 80 or so km to the QLD/NT border only had enough tar for one lane. When passing a road train coming the other way (they didn't leave the tarred part for a car coming the other way) you could get past by having the driver's side wheels at the very left edge with the passenger side in the dirt. By 2004 (I think) they'd widened it so vehicles could actually pass. I imagine it would've been a lot more 'fun' taking this detour back then.

What an extraordinary journey mate.Great to see this magnificent country from your perspective.Your kenworth triple road train is bloody awesome.Thankyou so much for sharing this series with us.Truly grateful for the opportunity. Will watch it all again and again for sure. You did an excellent job.The views from the drone took the whole trip to another level. You realise the scale of the flooding immediately. It totally consumed the highway. The country around Pimba is breathtaking.Treeless Plains as far as the eyes can see.I love the isolation aspect. Mate well done.I hope you have many more great journeys ahead and I hope to see you and the big Kenny on the Stuart Highway some day.I'll be trying my absolute darnedest to get a quick pic of you with your triple road train for sure, without holding you up of course haha. That would be so awesome mate. Take care out there and thankyou to all you guys and gals that help keep this vast country of ours connected and on it's feet.Gratitude.Everybody give this guys room and try not to hold them up if your able to.Cheers!🙂👍🇦🇺

Spot on there Tom, I put a camera on the front of the Prime Mover and on the rear of the third trailer in the video "Road Trains - Living the Dream" to show us going around a corner in Darwin. Would have loved to have done it at Glendambo as well as flying the drone but time was against me and should the drone taken off, the situation there would have been an issue to chase it. I do like your thoughts though, cheers.

Once again Mick, another fine video. I live in Ontario Canada and have been able to drive the Outback a few times so it was just like being back there riding along with you. However, I had no idea that flooding at times could be so severe. Your easy going narration and demeanour perfectly fits. Great work and be safe always.

Thanks Gary, glad you liked it. The flooding was something that we do not normally see so much of. The east coast of Australia continues to suffer with flooding today as I type this to you.

Thanks so much for doing this series of videos Mick. It’s given me such a good look at your part of the world from a truckers perspective. 👍🍺🥩🇨🇦. (Your truck has better headlights than any of the trucks I ever drove)

Interesting to follow the video using google maps, get to see the difference between the video's water and dry (google Oct 2019) coming into Glendambo. Found points like the RFDS airstrip markings and the unbroken center line on the flooded section, also the pavement transition. Very Aussie on street view, numerous roadtrains and a roo that didn't make it. Amazing contrast when it greens up.

I am not a trucker yet, but i got my license. I learnt driving a truck with a connectable trailer, it was about 18 meters(Max limit for truck length in Europe here). I can't imagine driving or parking with however long your truck is.
