In this video we take a look at a true fine scale 7.25" gauge quarry hunslet named Bernstein built by a member of the Leyland Society of Model Engineering.
This has not been built from a kit, taking 8 full years to build, every part has been made from full scale works drawings, just scaled down to 3 5/8" to the foot scale.
The prototype locomotive is the 1898, works no.678, Quarry Hunslet originally built for the Dinorwic Slate Quarries in North Wales. Originally named No.1 it soon changed to Bernstein and remained working at the quarries into the 1960's. In preservation the loco ended up at the Lytham Creek Railway and renamed Jonathan by the owner and paint in a very unusual colour. The loco spent some time on loan at the Bala Lake railway in the late 1980's before spending a few years on Loan to the West Lancashire Light Railway. By the early 2000's the locomotive was returned home to Lytham and kept hidden away until it made a surprise appearance on display at the Statfold Barn Railway in 2021. Maybe we shall see it back in steam in the future??
For now we get to appreciate this locomotive in model form, without a doubt the most beautifully engineered built model locomotive I've ever seen.

It so darn cute! They need some track work with dips and bumps and jerks of the track at points where the engine looked like it was going to do a Dukes of Hazzard jump.

Hi Gary, they are making progress on the track, new sleepers, ballast, levelling etc. but there is, I think a mile in circuit to do. It’s great loco though, took the bumps no trouble. All the best, Matt

Mate, that was one of the best start-up, run, and steam-down vids. I’ve ever seen. Beautiful little loco, lots of scale detail too. No wonder it took eight years to build. Thanks for such a really good video 👏👏👏 Regards, Robert PS Any idea of the weight of the bare loco?

Hi Robert, thank you, that is much appreciated. It really is a beautiful loco, as to its weight, I’m unsure I’m afraid and I won’t see the owner for a couple of weeks as I’m away. I’ll ask him on return. All the best, Matt

Hi Matt What can one say the engine is a true master piece of engineering. The tack needs some major up grade work to ensure safety is maintained.

Hi RB, it really is, the video doesn’t really do it justice, it’s even better in real life. The track work is being relaid, a section at a time with the new plastic sleepers, new ballast, levelling ect, but the loop is a mile long so it’s no speedy process. We have had no derailments yet, it doesn’t look that bad when your there. All the best, Matt

Hi Geoff, well I need to start driver training at some point, it’s been a few years since I’ve fired a loco, but I think I’ll be in good hands at the club 👍. All the best, Matt

Being 2ft gauge this loco will be much bigger than a std gauge one.
