Not much of a machinist myself, but the rotary table tip that stuck with me is from blondihacks: make keys for it so it registers on your mill table, which makes setup a lot faster and easier.

G’day and greetings from Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺 Matt, you have done a terrific job on restoring that rotary table and a great size. I only found out about your channel not that long ago, I have a 8”” rotary table and it has a broken shaft in it which I would like to restore as well. I have enjoyed watching you bring this back to the living. I have subscribed regards John😊

Hi John, thank you for the subscription and your kind comments are very much appreciated. The rotary table has turned out great, I’m really pleased how it operates. It was very enjoyable to project to undertake. That will be an interesting exercise make or even repairing the shaft. Thanks again, All the best, Matt 👍

I have a small rotary table about this same size. On mine, the worm and gear sit in an oil bath. Not a lot, just enough to cover the bottom 1/3 of the worm.
@MattChiversWorkshopКүн бұрын
Yes this definitely has a dip where the worm is, and I pumped a lot of oil in, which I forgot to film, need to swap the zerks on it as they aren't great. So the worm should 🤞🏼 be in a bath of oil. All the best, Matt 👍

Don’t use a bare wrench on those surfaces. Normally, there is a set screw that gives an adjustable limit to the tightness of the worm and the gear for proper backlash. Loosening the lock lever allows you to rotate the worm entirely away from the gear to free turn the table. I see someone mentioned that. There is usually a set screw to the right of the shaft, on the right side of the casting to hold the entire assembly in the bite which sits in a groove in the worm housing. Sometimes it at the bottom. Without removing that you can’t get the assembly out. That may have been the screw you removed from the bottom. From here it’s hard to tell. Never grease a rotary table. After a short time it will lock up. I’m not sure how you rate oils there, but usually a medium hydraulic oil is used.
@MattChiversWorkshop14 күн бұрын
Thanks for the information Mel, much appreciated. I have a lot of information to get into the finale of this rebuild. Lots of great knowledge comes out from this great community I have. When I started it, it was just a rusty rotary table, now I have lots of information on how it actually works (it’s completely different to my large rotary table), how to set it correctly and also some history information on its former life and possible age. Which is all fantastic, everyday is a school day and there is always something to learn. All the best, Matt 👍
@rossbuchanan763215 күн бұрын
The Ministry of Supply was closed down in 1959, so they won't be after you. Whilst that rotary Table was HM Gov. property, it would have been assigned to some government or military machine shop- base, airfield or onboard ship. With the vast reduction in the MOD establishment, it was likely sold off quite legitimately in the 70's or 80's.
@MattChiversWorkshop15 күн бұрын
Thank Ross, fantastic information…. It may find its way into the final of the rebuild 🤞…. If I remember 😂😂. To think this is could be as young as 65 years old is staggering…. It’s in good condition really for its age!. All the best, Matt 👍

trying to take something apart without having a clue how it works. Maybe looking for a diagram on-line might help, so you don't destroy it inadvertently. It is obvious that there must be a mechanism that drives the table using a hand wheel, and that they are therefore connected.
@MattChiversWorkshop15 күн бұрын
Hi Stephen, I know how it works, just not how it went together 😂. As long as the angle grinder doesn't come out! If there was a model or a brand to look up, I would have looked it up, I did have a rough idea. It's now apart and the only damage is that of its previous life before I was donated it. All is good. All the Best, Matt 👍

The eccentric is also used to disengage the worm from the round thread on the table, allows the table to be spun by hand.

@@MattChiversWorkshop I’ve found, over the decades, that people put grease where they should put oil, and oil where they should put grease. Nobody likes to read manuals, or to look something up. The other problem is that some people think they’re smarter than the manufacturer.
@MattChiversWorkshop13 күн бұрын
@melgross yep… my Bridgeport was riddled with grease everywhere, and it should all be oiled! The manual clearly states it’s all oil unless it’s a grease packed head. People see a zerk, and automatically think oh it’s for grease. With regard to the rotary, it had grease in, I thought it would have been oil…. put the question in the video…. the community answers 👍.
