7.3 Diesel Excursion -8°F (-22°C) Cold Start

Vehicle sat since 5 the previous day (over 14 hours) unplugged and in low single digits to -8°F when I went to start it.
I have a suspicion that if I used a lighter weight oil for temperatures this cold, it'd start much easier. Judging by how it starts easy, sounds fine, lumps, then stalls, I think the oil is too viscous at this temp to flow easily, starving the injectors.
You may notice I don't keep turning the key off after trying to start to re-run the glow plugs. That's because on the 7.3 PowerStroke, the injectors remain on for up to 2 minutes after the light goes out. So even though the light was out, the plugs were still on. That's why I turned the key off and back on after a while, so as to restart that timer and keep them lit.

The glow plugs stay on for 90 seconds, even after the wait to start light goes out. So they were on while I was trying to start it. This hard start was due to the oil viscosity and HEUI injectors.

Nice man! I love cold starts, uncle has an old 7.3 (Which is going onto about 370,220) and a 6.0 (Which is at 128K *Thank the lord*). Man I tell you up in OH and TN, ain't nothing compared to yours. His start up nice and pretty (Probably because it don't get colder than like 12 at the lowest) Don't know why people posting that "Lot more wrong than a cold start" or "Time for a new truck". Obviously they don't know anything about diesel engines, because unlike cars diesel engines use self-combustion and not spark plugs. Ergo why diesels can be harder to start in cold weather. Still beautiful either way glad to see some people still appreciate the 7.3 Powerstroke, it's my personal favorite.

@@fortunatedad7695 Nice. We've actually been driving a 6.0 now for 5 years. It's honestly started easier than our 7.3's in the cold, using the 5-40 full synthetic as well. Not that the 7.3's ever failed to start, the 6.0 just always seems to light off faster. Coldest I've tried both is -12°F. The 0 weight ought to help you if you get much colder, which I'd assume is the case. They've got block heaters too if you really need it, but honestly I've never used, nor felt the need to use ours.

I personally would have given this 7.3 diesel engine some good hard revving when it did eventually start & stay running & that would have helped to 'clear things' & free things up somewhat. You might want to get your glow plugs looked at for a start my friend & then sort out your injectors!
@nate0031
@nate0031 2 жыл бұрын
The throttle was pushed, but it did exactly what you see in the video. It simply won't rev if the injectors can't get oil. Glowplugs were all good. I switched to 5w-40 synthetic so oil could flow better in the cold, and it no longer had issues.

I rather think it's lack of fuel. Diesel clogs up when it's cold. If you have an old fuel-filter, replace it and it might be fine.
@nate0031
@nate0031 7 жыл бұрын
Rayner Bønå Not a bad theory, but she was running winter fuel, and none of our other diesels gelled either that day. Gelling also wouldn't have cleared itself like that. Would've moreso done the opposite, starting easy then stalling and refusing to start. 7.3's, being that they use HEUI injectors, are sensitive to thick oil. If the oil is too thick, such as having a higher viscosity in cold weather, flow is hampered and the high pressure oil system has difficulty keeping up with the injectors.
@therandomtester9561
@therandomtester9561 7 жыл бұрын
Ok, so then your fuel it self should not be the problem. It ran quite all right the first or second time it startet, and then acted up.. If all was well with fuel-delivery it should have ran quite fine, maby a small hickup, not like that.. So this seemes to me as lack of fuel. An old fuel-filter will give restriction even though it's not all sludge, but will increase the likelyness of sludge/gel I believe. So a little heat in the engine would free up the filter and provide enough fuel for a smooth run. *IF* it's filter-related, after the engine has stalled I believe the fuel-delivery pump still runs for a while. That will provide enough fuel for your next startup, giving this "magic" fix. For sure, I'm not 100% sure, but a fuel-filter is so cheap and to stupid to neglect if that in fact is the problem ;)
@nate0031
@nate0031 7 жыл бұрын
Rayner Bønå Problem is, fuel filter didn't even have 1,000 miles on it when this video was taken. It was still quite new. Do you know how HEUI works?
@therandomtester9561
@therandomtester9561 7 жыл бұрын
Hmm, there blows my theory for this one ;) No sorry. I'm just a self-thaught mechanic, living in Norway, where "nobody" buys V8-cars, or even american cars ;)
@nate0031
@nate0031 7 жыл бұрын
Rayner Bønå No problem with that, lol. Was still a good theory. In sum, each injector is it's own high pressure fuel pump, a unit injector. On this particular engine, there's a high pressure fuel pump (HPOP) that supplies each injector with up to 3,000 PSI of oil pressure. When the computer wants to fire an injector, it energizes a solenoid that allows the high pressure oil to act on a plunger, which in turn presses on the fuel, pressurizes it, and injects it. The area of the plunger that the oil presses on is 7 times larger than the area of it that presses on the fuel, so injection pressure is 7 times greater than oil pressure, giving about 21,000 peak injection pressure. So what is most likely happening here is, the thick 15w-40 oil is nice and thick at those temperatures, so it's harder to push it through the tubes that supply each injector. The surges are likely caused by the injectors having enough oil to fire initially, but as the engine comes up to idle, the oil volume required by the injectors to fire cannot be pushed by the pump, so the engine begins to stall. As engine speed falls, the pump is able to bring oil rail pressure up, and the injectors able to fire again, wherein you get the repeated surging. As the engine runs a little and the oil begins to warm, it starts running better and better and having longer times between surging and stalling, until finally the oil flows freely enough to sustain normal engine operation. I highly doubt I would've had this had i switched to a lower weight oil for the winter, as it would've flowed much better at lower temperatures. The Ford 7.3 PowerStroke, Ford 6.0 PowerStroke, and various Navistar and Caterpillar engines used this design. Most all applications of it have since been replaced with common rail setups. The design was quite advanced when it came out in the early 90's, offering somewhat similar capabilities to common rail before common rail had really come into the market. All our other diesels are European, lol. Several TDI's. Whether VE pump, Pumpe Duse, or common rail, they all light right off in the cold.

Eh, didn't need to be. Just needed lighter weight oil for the winter. It was usually in the garage anyway, and it doesn't spend a whole lot of time that cold around here. Even with the 15w-40, it'd light off the first time if it was 0 or warmer.
