My dad ran a K&N on his 7.3L PowerStroke diesel for about 10 years. He said he cleaned and re-oiled it about once a year. When he decided to sell his truck, I thought I would swap the K&N to keep for my own 7.3. I could not believe the amount of fine dust I saw on the "clean" side of the intake. I threw the K&N in the trash. For reference: he lives on a dirt road, a half mile from pavement.

I am a diesel tech specializing in powerstrokes, more 6L but others as well, I watch your vids all the time and thank you, but I have seen too many dusted engines and/or dirt in the intake tubes due to these gauze type filters(kn,afe, etc) by far paper filters are the best, I think its worth a little restriction then dusting your engine

yeah really surprised to see this video on this channel. so thanks for confirming what I had heard many, many times. few years ago, I spoke in length to the manager of ZIEMS in farmington NM about my 7.3L cold start issues. We ended up talking (at the shop) for about an hour. After taking time to explain the entire starting system and what it entails (WOW, I had no idea), he wrote out a list of checks to make to diagnose the cold start issue. The guy could run any Ford truck he wants, yet still owns two 7.3L personal trucks that he said are his favorite. He told me DO NOT EVER UPGRADE filter, turbo, etc, etc. Stick with stock parts, sizes, ratings, etc. His reasoning is that it creates a weak link in the entree drive chain, or really it creates a strong link that then puts more wear on the rest of the stock components. Besides why does anyone need a hot rod diesel truck? just asking for issues I think. My old 7.3L can handle any situation I could every throw at it. I'm not towing a 40' 5th wheel around the hills, just towing log trailer and rarely a skid steer. and I am gentle on the pedal. No need to be in a rush. I've been told this by several mechanics and it makes PERFECT sense. .

My brother had a 99 7.3 6spd and he wanted a newer truck, not fuck with gears anymore, and have a better turn radius, so he bought a lmm dirtymax and it was reduced engine power cuz the guy who he bought I from didn't tell him what was wrong and he checked everything so then he sent into a shop and had to pay another grand to fix... I've worked on and built Caterpillar engines for 25yrs and I have seen what idiot's do when it comes to air filters. Bill is right about the K&N being ok for on road high perf use. Keeping the element oiled is very important (most people don't). Most people put the little square K&N in the stock box and get the engine dusted mainly from the outer seal sucking in or failing when the little filter gets plugged in a day of driving gravel roads and running hard. I run the Donaldson B085011 on my nephew and brother-in-laws 7.3's and do because of the gravel roads they see every week. Like I've heard Bill say " A diesel engine is a air pump" Air in and out the fastest smoothest least restrictive way makes power. Along with a little fuel and timing.

Issues with power and trailer going up 3 hills/Folsom Lake even with trailer and only 1 little horse. Haven't changed my filter in a long time but part of that is the mechanic broke the clips on the box so he kind of sealed it with screws. Was going to change it myself to save $ and do my fuel filter to troubleshoot and do maintenance. So please could you tell me and am I undersatnding lol what you just showed me. That filter had no box. Am I thinking of two different things here or did you get rid of the box? I live on a dirt road so could get really dusty. I thought it was the square filter??? am I getting them mixed up?? or are there two filters ie air intake and cold air intake are those two separate things??

IDK why people hate on K&N filters and claim they let dust in. 300k miles on my 7.3 with a K&N and there's not a spec of dust inside that intake. Of course if you don't clean it then yeah you'll have problems, but maintain it properly and these filters are great.

I don't understand why people are saying that K & N filters let more dirt in the engine. When I had my '88 mustang v8 during the first few months the factory airbox filter was in place there was a very fine buildup of dust inside the MAF. After replacing with a k & N there was no longer that fine dust. I am not saying that it does/doesn't filter; just 1 obsevation out of many who have done this simple replacement.

He does offer some good advice, but he's also a business man and all about the benjamin's concerning his business foremost. The prison I worked at had its own firehouse and they ran two 1 ton ford diesel fire trucks. The 7.3 was rock solid where the 6.0 was often down for service with injector problems. Perhaps its from the way they operated it, short tripping. I much prefer the highly reliable 7.3 even though it may take me an extra couple minutes to get where I'm going.

I have do everything a lot of research from different spots. I have found that the k&n filters do add power but the filter does not filter out completely. it has do with the turbo pulling to much air threw it. the dealer has a system that is off the 6.0 that fits the 7.3 that gives the same power and filters a lot better. mine was 300 from the dealer. I'm just about convinced that my 99 7.3 Has some type of issue either building boost or bleeding boost off too early because if I step on mine let it build and let off at high rpm like you did during that heavy acceleration I do not hear my waist gate let out excess pressure I don't have any of that whooshing sound or flutter or whatever you wanna call it. Also running a Bluetooth OBD2 scanner/data log type set up with the torque pro app on my phone my truck will only hit just shy of 15 pounds of boost and that's matted to the floor doing a heavy Pull to just above 60 mph
@FXR0385 жыл бұрын
ryan carpenter I had to replace the passenger-side fuel line on my truck and when I first bought it I was hearing the wastegate let off really hard. I was getting around 23 psi at wide-open throttle and all of a sudden I wasn’t getting any more than 15 psi. My intake boots below the inter cooler/intake “Y” pipe were loose when I took it off to replace the fuel line.. The hose clamps had loosened up and that’s where my boost leak was coming from. Although it was strange because even with the boots loose I have lower PSI but it still held I wasn’t losing it as I drove.It sounds almost identical to the problem I had checked all your boots and hose clamps on the air intake side. Once I tightened everything up when I let off the Excelerator you can hear the wastegate blowing the pressure off like crazy.

I can agree that there would be a better throttle response with a less restrictive filter, but a less restrictive filter is obviously also letting in more contaminants. If I'm pulling a grade and my turbo gauge says I have 25 pounds of positive pressure, than I'd say my stock paper filter is not so restrictive and doing just fine. These trucks weren't built to win races after all. Reliability and longevity trumps performance in my book everyday.

Better do an OA on that truck. The last time I saw K&Ns on a 7.3, they dusted motors (high silicon count in the oil). And my 6637 (Tymer) supplied enough air to make 450hp/1016tq on the dyno. That's at the wheels -- most likely over 500 hp and 1100+ at the flywheel. Ran it for years like that with very clean OAs.

The increase in power is an increase in airflow as K&N filter doesn't do much filtering. You would be better of putting the 60 bucks in savings for an engine rebuild and not run a filter then putting on a K&N. They let tons of small particles through and into you engine. If you drive in dust or off road getting real filter is a must. My opinion is based on years of working on off road cars and seeing how much dirt is sitting in the intakes and early engine rebuilds as a result.

K&Ns allow more airflow by...wait for it...reducing filtering. A long term study showed exactly what you expect, short term gain and long term loss. A stock truck doesn't see the HP gain up front, but down the road it has the same power. Down the road a K&N has less power from all the particles getting into the engine.
