I'm glad you're better Mike, that would be scary. The common .303 wildcats in Australia were the .303-22 and the .303-25, but I've also heard of .303-270 and .303-6mm. These were all created in the 1950's or 60's when there were so many Lee Enfield's around after the war that almost every household had one. In those days sporting calibers were hard to come by and so some enterprising gunsmiths would make their own. These days of course we have access to all the modern sporting rifles and calibers, except semi-auto's, and these wildcats are now rare, although there are still some around. Wishing you all the best Mike and don't worry, you're never boring!

Those wildcats mostly came about because NSW had a ban on military cartridges.

Ellwood Epps, the founder of the store by the same name which is North of Orillia Ontario, developed a number of wildcat cartridges based on the 303 British case. The 303 Epps (an improved 303 British), 270 Epps and 358 Epps are a few I remember. Take care of yourself, Mike, don't shake the shunt in your head loose on our accounts. All the best for your recovery.

We still see quite a few Fulton Regulated or DCRA No 4 Lee Enfields up her in Canada that were converted for target shooting with the .308. Loads were not as hot as what we may shoot these days but reports were that the converted rifles often shot better than the .303 versions. My understanding is that most rifles converted to .308 were used as a single shot for target work. Palma bullets were usually 155 grain.

Bisley style shooting (Fullbore/Palma) is shot from the prone with shooting slings with a single shot rifle (the magazine follower on this would be used only as a loading platform). The distance ranges from 300yds minimum to 1000yds (as far as I've seen).

I have shot and coached at Bisley for many years. It's an extraordinary mix of archaic old school, colonial style buildings and layout, and up to date excellent ranges. In fairness, it's taken the management many years to upgrade the basic facilities around camp, but it's coming together now! The rifle you show, would no doubt push out to 1200 yards on Stickledown Range. It's very common to shoot 7.62x51 at that range. Century is from 300yds to 600yds ( you can shoot at closer ranges there too, but those are the most common competition distances). Short Siberia is I believe.. ? a 200yrd range and others cater for gallery rifle and many, many other disciplines including black powder pistol and historic firearms. Too many clubs to mention here! It's known here in the UK as the National Shooting Centre and has a very long and extraordinary history. There are also two shotgun, clay target clubs/companies based there and a well known specialist gun shop and armourers called Fulton's. William Evans also have (had?) their shop there. I am so sorry to hear about your health issues and sincerely hope that you make a full recovery and can continue to shoot your amazing rifles! A great channel, and we always learn from you! Take care of yourself.

Hi, I remember talking to an armourer about changing a military Enfield 303 into a sporting rifle as we had a chance in the 70’s to buy the army surplus rifles for $10 . The armourer told me it would only be worth my while if I could get hold of the spare barrel of a 303 or 7.62 Bren as the Bren’s had better barrels and higher quality steel and extra rifling that made them better for sporting rifle usage. Could not source the barrels so never did try out his suggestions. Often wondered what if? Cheers mate. Harera

Probably 40 or 50 years ago I recall reading that SMLE-based target rifles had the interesting characteristic of being relatively more accurate at 600 yards than at 100 yards, measured in m.o.a. and compared to a 40X, for example. I wrote to Roy Dunlap, the famous gunsmith, to inquire about building an economical long-range or Palma rifle on an Enfield action. He opined that finished rifle would be as expensive as one built on a Remington 700 or Winchester 70 action so I did not pursue it. But I’ve always thought that was a fascinating quirk of harmonics. Perhaps, Mike, when you are healed you will get to Bisley and find out if that story is true of your rifle. Best wishes for your good health.

Stay fit and well my friend. The rifle reminds me of my Parker Hale T4 but has a longer 30 in barrel rather than the normal 26in. This may have been done for Match Rifle competition at 1000, 1100 and 1200 on Stickledown Range at Bisley. These type of No4 converted to 7.62 and target barrel are still in use and most clubs will have a few members with these fitted with scopes. You magazine is the 303 as it was meant for single shot in competitions. There is a 7.62 magazine but they are expensive and harder to find. All the Best from Scotland.

I wish You a swift and full recovery so if the doctor says No shooting ,So be it . Your health is way more important than making videos of You using the rifles You teach us about . You always have insights and revelations that many of us may not be aware of so they are never dull or uninteresting and Your viewers appreciate Your opinions and commentaries . If You start suffering Withdrawal symptoms from a lack of trigger time You could always break out Your Airguns and do a few shooting episodes on those and still give us Your excellent low downs on the powder burners of note and We know You Will be giving us accurate information as You always have . If You really feel that that particular rifle needs to fired on screen to correctly demonstrate a particular issue , You could always take aim from the other side of the lens and let Your Good Wife take the lead with the actual shooting and You do the commentary as required , although I'm sure that there must be more than a few female viewers who may appreciate a Women's opinion on the rifle in question . Thanks Mike , catch You next time , Shoot Straight Stay Safe & Get Well Soon .

Mike I'm glad you didn't have a stroke. I don't know much about this condition but I hope the neurologist has a good prognosis for you and I hope you're doing well. That's a cool Enfield it reminds me of the swedish Mauser converted target rifles. Not sure about that one but I think the swedish Mauser target rifles compete at 300 m. Thank you I hope you're feeling and doing great soon.

During the 2012 London Olympics, the Olympic committe refused to invest in, or use the large Bisley complex for the competition, but instead, built, at great expense, a temporary range in East London which was dismantled afterwards.
