556 has higher pressure because it uses a different measurement standard. There is a physical difference between 556 and 223 chamber cuts in a barrel with 556 having more throat to allow more bullet stick out or jump for rounds like tracers.
@jagertroop Жыл бұрын
The bullet doesn’t stick out more. There is a gap (bullet jump) between the bullet and rifling engagement on the 5.56 chamber. A .223 chambering has more immediate engagement. The gap is necessary to allow the bullet to get moving before engaging the rifling, which relives some pressure. External dimensions are indistinguishable to the naked eye. Internal case dimensions are quite different due to a thicker case wall, creating a smaller combustion chamber, hence the higher pressure. 👍🏻

For the last twenty years or more, many barrels come with both marked on the barrel. These are my four or two depending on how you look at its calibers. My guess is many of the guys telling you what you can't do have never had much trigger time with those rounds or weapons. I have been using all four rounds in two guns since the 70s.
@niktotinsticks Жыл бұрын
Can’t just say 223 chambered barrel bro because that’s wrong. You can shoot 556 out of a 223 Wylde barrel but not a 223 Remington barrel. Gotta be more Pacific 🌊 🌚

The reasoning for the 7.62 Nato is funny. First the USA wanted a very powerful cartridge against the east, that's also the reasoning for the FAL basically. But then the USA wanted a cartridge that weights less so they came up with the 5.56 NATO, making the 7.62 NATO nearly obsolete. Of course it sees its use still today, still its kinda dumb
@flyfishermannick3632 Жыл бұрын
Thos argument is so old. As Ling as your gun wasn't made with plastic...it's fine send it. Modern chambers no matter the caliber are designed to withstand pressures well above Sammi specs and the differences are minimal. I've shot both in both. 223 does have a shorter throat spec on the chamber than the 556. That's why the "pressure differences" but it's not enough to matter unless it's a custom built 223 varmint rifle for like 35 or 40 grain bullets. Send it. And stop talking about stuff you haven't done first hand. I've shot both 556 and 223 out of both 556 and 223 rifles. And I've done the same with 308 and 7.62. The only thing I saw was a little bit of primer burn on the 223 bolt gun I was using. That's it. Means that some gas was escaping around the primer and hitting the bolt causing a primer ring. After 1500 rounds it was still just fine.
@Gageboyd06663 Жыл бұрын
This is a complete myth, 556 and 223 are almost the same round, with like a 30fps difference, 762x51 and 308 aren’t different at all, same fps and same ballistics
