I think the good hack I have is to cut test trips in half; I buy 100 and get 200 strip by splitting; very easy and no waste.

@@BRSfresh just set up 2 actually. But they are not my first ones. But I do have to say I never went past that horrenderous algae state. The longest one I got was half a year and still algae bloomed... So I collected everything I know and redone it after some years :)

Great video, Chris. I am trying to balance surface agitation and keeping floating plants. Surface agitation seems to kill my floating plants.

@BRSfresh I tired red root floaters, which turned to mush within a period of 2 weeks. I also had some duckweed. The duckweed lasted longer but eventually all died.

My river aquarium only issue I have is the black colored algae goes crazy on the River rock and gravel, every surface of rock that faces the light will have it. What can I do to fix it and what am I doing to create it? I added some live plants to help with the nutrient load they need time to grow though lights are on for 10 hours or more but I still get it even with 6 hours of light

It could be that - lighting is a good place to start when kicking off an algae investigation. Are you running CO2? CO2 fluctuations can definitely cause algae to form (especially Black Beard). Cut back on ferts if you're using them, drop your light to 4-6hrs, or if you keep it 6-8, take the intensity down. You can try raising the light up as well. Clean the surfaces as best you can, do a water change and then adjust the lighting. Algae is forms when CO2, lighting and nutrients are out of balance. It may take some testing and trying to find what works best for your set up.

I'm guessing the nutrients in the substrate will only last so long. Then what? Add fertilizer? If that is the case why not just add fertilizer to gravel for instance? Please advise.

The nutrients last for around a year. Then after that, you can add more substrate or fertilizer tabs ✅

@@shane8539 That'll depend on the size of the grains of gravel and the type of plants you use. The roots of some types of plants will have a harder time finding their way to the fert tabs through some types of gravels. Assuming that the gravel and plants you pick get along fine, then fert tabs can work fine, but there are just too many other variables at play to make a blanket guarantee. Imo, aquasoil's generally a better pick, but that doesn't meant that fert tabs are bad or that they don't work. That said, if I were going to scape a new tank today, I'd be using aquasoil of some sort.

You can create swirling motions with your hand to gently lift up debris from the top soil and use a gravel vacuum or syphon.

I can smell when i need to do aa water change, and yes Its mostly due to overfeeding. damned corys are too damned cute. . . . .but yeah if your fish tank smells fishy then you have dirty water it should smell either of nothing or the forest floor. but yeah doing water testing is a good habit to keep, if i wasnt in a 3rd world country would test weekly
